Spencer Shows Up Well In The Latest Garden ‘Rebirth Of The Blues’
NEW YORK, N. Y.— Just when exuberant Irv Spencer was beginning to believe he was a permanent adornment on the Rangers’ bench, coach Doug Harvey upset his sweet repose and ordered him to play regularly at the start of February. “Spinner,” as he’s affectionately known, was so unnerved by the surprise invitation he went out and played some of the most exciting defense seen in Madison Square Garden all season. Much of it was good, too. Even such reserved critics as Harry Howell and Harvey permitted a few adjectives to escape them in discussing their mustardy young friend. “If Irv can harness all that energy,” said Howell, who has been teaming with the Sudbury citizen, “he’ll be fine. Fred Hucul To Watch His Goals Mark Go By Boards
Sidelined EDMONTON, Alta.— One of the hard-luck guys in the Western League this time around has to be Freddy Hucul, the Calgary Stampeders’ long-time mainstay on the blueline. The injury bugaboo has kept him from protecting his all-time league record for goals by a defenceman from the onslaughts by team-mate Doug Barkley and Edmonton’s Lloyd Haddon. He might have been the guy to break his own record of 21 first, except just three days before the league’s All-Star Game in Portland early in January, he suffered a broken finger. There was an odd twist to that one. He is a perennial choice to the Dream Teams in this circuit, but there are some observers who feel that his brother, Sandy Hucul, is an even better one over at Spokane.
