Old Story—Vic Making Good In New Comeback
DETROIT, Mich.— Among other things that can be said for Vic Stasiuk is that he keeps coming back. The burley, 32-year-old winger has become an important cog for the Red Wings after being seemingly washed up with the Boston Bruins. But Vic is getting used to it. Stasiuk had two tries with the Black Hawks and five with the Wings before finally making it in a big way with the Bruins. For five straight seasons he starred with Boston and averaged 24 goals a season. With Johnny Bucyk and Bronco Horvath, Stasiuk formed the Uke Line, the highest scoring line in the National Hockey League. Then the Bruin brass started looking at statistics and said the Ukes were allowing as many or more goals than they were scoring and the line was broken up. Stasiuk watched more…
Won’t Sign 3 Year Deal Next Season
NEW YORK, N.Y.— Hector “toe” Blake, the most successfu1 coach in professional hockey, quietly denied published rumors that he would retire at the end of the 1961-62 season. The mellow voiced (after victories) 49-year-old Montreal Canadiens coach admitted it was becoming increasingly difficult to work himself into a froth over every game. But that won’t stop him. ‘I’ll be back,” Blake disclosed to the HOCKEY NEWS. “I doubt I’ll sign a three-year contract like I did in the past. But I’ll be back. I’ll sign for one year and see how I feel after that.” Toe, who has five Stanley Cups and five first place finishes to his credit since becoming Montreal coach in 1955-56. had been reported ready to retire to his profitable tavern business in Montreal.
