Juveniles Cough Up For Indoor Ice Rink Rental

WINNIPER, Man.—Metro Winnipeg’s juvenile hockey players may have professional aspirations, but they still are amateurs at heart. Since the Greater Winnipeg association was formed in 1957 and the Manitoba association eliminated the grants minor hockey in Winnipeg received in the past, which always paid for indoor ice team, were cancelled. Thus the juveniles have played their hockey on open air rinks and now shell out 50 cents each to rent indoor ice. It looked bad for the juveniles when the venerable Olympic rink was converted to curling by Owner Jack Perrin but the Winnipeg Arena found time for them on Saturday evenings. But they still pay their half-buck to play.…

Voss Slaps Down George For Not Following Rules

MONTREAL, Que.— Linesman George Hayes is sitting out a suspension slapped on him by NHL president Clarence Campbell and referee-in-chief Carl Voss for a “breach of travel regulations.” Hayes was suspended effective December 4 by referee-in-chief Carl Voss following repeated violations, Campbell said. Campbell explained that NHL officials are required to travel first class and particularly they are required to get a night’s sleep before they work a game. The NHL boss said that Hayes had been riding day coaches and pocketing the difference. “We don’t care how much money he makes that way,” Campbell said. “That has nothing to do with it. What we are concerned about is that the officials are fit and in proper condition to work.” Hayes was suspended indefinitely, “probably for at least two weeks,” Campbell said. “He must make…
