Stamps, Canucks Go Hunting Around For New NHL Angels
EDMONTON, Alta.— Every so often a whisper is heard that Calgary Stampeders and the Chicago Black Hawks will soon agree to go their separate ways. It has sort of stuck in the craw of some of the Calgary fans and Stampede heads that they should not receive the first choice of Black Hawk farmhands…especially since their neighbor to the north, Edmonton, is Detroit’s No. 1 minor league affiliate. The storms have had a habit of subsiding, however…although there was some lifting of eyebrows when the Cowboys went to Toronto for a goaltender this fall. Calgary came up with Ed Babiuk, when Art Lariviere, Who spelled off Lucien Dechene from time to time last year, was found to be a little short of the mark. Voss Slaps Down George For Not Following Rules
MONTREAL, Que.— Linesman George Hayes is sitting out a suspension slapped on him by NHL president Clarence Campbell and referee-in-chief Carl Voss for a “breach of travel regulations.” Hayes was suspended effective December 4 by referee-in-chief Carl Voss following repeated violations, Campbell said. Sid Booms Bassen For More Zoom In In-And-Out Wings
DETROIT. Mich.— Hank Bassen did it before…maybe he can do it again. Bassen perked up the Red Wings a year ago and helped them into the playoffs with some sharp goal-tending and the quiet Westerner is indicating that he might do it again. After returning from a nine-game relief chore for the Edmonton Flyers of the Western League—and that was nine games in 14 days—Bassen went into goal for the Wings in place of Terry Sawchuk as coach Sid Abel kept looking for a winning combination. Hank, who turned 20 on Dec. 6, sparkled and the Wings won two of their next three starts beating Boston and Toronto, 3-1 in each game, and losing 3-2 at Montreal, a game that Abel figures the Wings should have won. Bassen lost his shutouts in the Boston and…
