<p>CHICAGO, III.&mdash;</p><p>For the past two seasons Ken Wharram has been the &ldquo;man in the mask&rdquo; for the Chicago Black Hawks&mdash;both times with a broken jaw.</p><p>The first time Ken was checked into the boards by Toronto defenseman Jerry James and his jaw was broken on both sides. He missed 11 games and was wired for six weeks. The Black Hawks made a mask of an old helmet and a plastic shield so Ken could play. That was near the end of the 1959-60 season.</p><p>Then last year Wharram was checked by Detroit&rsquo;s rookie defenseman Howie Young and the jaw was broken in the same place on only the right side. &ldquo;The check wasn&rsquo;t actually hard enough to break the jaw again except that it hadn&rsquo;t healed properly,&rdquo; says Wharram. This time he was wired for three weeks and missed only six games. Chicago trainer Nick Garen had saved the mask&mdash;it cost the Black Hawks $150&mdash;and Wharram wore it again.</p><p>&ldquo;The mask wasn&rsquo;t too bad except I had trouble seeing the puck when it was at my feet,&rdquo; says Ken. &ldquo;And the eating wasn&rsquo;t too much fun. It was all right at home when my wife, Jean, mixed my food in a blender. I could even eat steak when it was diluted by soup. But I couldn&rsquo;t eat too much because I had to take it in through - a straw and all the liquids soon made me bloated. The toughest part was getting restaurants on the road to fix my food. In 1951-52 at Indianapolis of the AHL he picked up 99 minutes. Rangers Making Experts Look Bad

Que.&mdash;</p><p>One sometimes wonders how far ahead of the NHL pack the Canadiens would be if they still had a guy named Doug Harvey on their defense.</p><p>And one sometimes wonders how far behind the pack the New York Rangers would be if they didn&rsquo;t have a guy named Doug Harvey on their defense.</p><p>After eight weeks of play in the 1961-62 season Harvey had done more to upset the prediction applecart of the NHL experts than any single man or team in pro hockey today. If he can keep it up the Rangers could make those experts look pretty foolish come next March.</p><p>It&rsquo;s interesting to note just how far off base the experts are after the eight weeks of play. Only the Boston Bruins are playing along with them and at times it looked as though they too, were getting fed up making them look good.</p><p>The experts picked the race to finish with Chicago on top followed by Montreal, Detroit. Toronto, New York and Boston.</p><p>On November 28 the standings showed Toronto, Montreal. New York, Chicago, Detroit and Boston.</p><p>What happened?</p><p>Doug Harvey happened! It&rsquo;s as simple as that. Harvey&rsquo;s playing defense and coaching the Blues has pumped life into a hockey club that has long had the potential, but never had the leader. It&rsquo;s hard to judge whether Doug is as good a coach as the standing would indicate. However, there&rsquo;s no doubt that he has been the inspiration for the Broadway Blues ever since that first puck was dropped. It shows in the Rangers play, but most of all it shows in the Rangers&rsquo; player&rsquo;s atttitudes.</p><p>Already the experts are beginning to revise their prediction list. They realize now that Chicago won the Stanley Cup in a seven game series, but they cannot judge them in a 70 game schedule on the basis of that playoff series.</p><p>What about the Canadiens&mdash;picked to end second. They miss Harvey, but they too are a far better club that the experts said they were. They have managed to stay in and around first without the aid of Jean Beliveau and minus Dickie Moore for most of the first two months. With Beliveau they must be rated one of the teams to beat again.</p><p>What about Detroit&mdash;picked for third. They have been hot and cold. Their great defense has been something of a flop after two months and the experts are beginning to believe that perhaps it never was that good. Bill Gadsby has not helped that much and Howie Young has been anything but his starry self of late 196061. These are the players who were going to make the Wings defense the best in the League. Up front Ed Litzenberger has cooled out and Norm Ullman has failed to get going. The Wings, had their defense knitted together and had Litz and Ullman produced on a more continuous basis, might have given the Rangers and Canadiens a better run for the marbles in the first two months.</p><p>Toronto&mdash;a powerhouse on a good night with depth and a good mixture of legs and desire, This is the club that might upset the experts, for they are capable of winning anytime they get the urge. If George Armstrong can get going and if Stanley can get into shape then Mr. Imlach could nudge past them all.</p><p>And Boston&mdash;well the experts said they couldn&rsquo;t make it, and they won&rsquo;t. But it won&rsquo;t be from the lack of trying. They may have it next year, but those kids just don&rsquo;t have enough of the old savvy to make it this season&mdash;despite Mr. Watson&rsquo;s predictions.</p><p>Oh yes, then there&rsquo;s Doug Harvey&rsquo;s Rangers. He&rsquo;s close to the top now! He&rsquo;s always been a hard gut to knock down, and there&rsquo;s no reason to believe he&rsquo;s any different as a Ranger than he was as a Hab.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Harvey Must Get Credit For Showing

<div class="byline">By JIM PROUDFOOT</div><p>TORONTO, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>There are two Maple Leaf hockey teams.</p><p>Under a Jekyll-Hyde setup, Leafs are unbeatable tigers on home ice at Maple Leaf Gardens and docile lambs on the road.</p><p>Over the first six weeks of the 1961-62 schedule, Leafs were undefeated at the Gardens, having won seven times and tied once. Away from home, they&rsquo;d lost six and won only three. This kept them in a scramble for second place with New York Rangers, a short distance behind pace-setting Montreal Canadiens.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01320/1739271-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="290" height="441"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Frank Mahovlich</b></figcaption></div><p>Last season, Leafs were a solid road club. They won 18 games on tour, losing 13 and drawing four. That&rsquo;s excellent production. Usually, in professional sports, you&rsquo;re happy to tie on the road and win at home. That&rsquo;s considered sound policy or at least a reasonable objective. A plus record out of town is rated a handsome bonus.</p><p>What&rsquo;s come over the Leafs?</p><p>For one thing, the National Hockey League is more evenly balanced. Leafs took 10 of a possible 14 points in their seven visits to New York&rsquo;s Madison Square Garden last year. This term, they&rsquo;ve lost three in a row to the improved Rangers, who are a much tougher proposition under the guidance of player-coach Doug Harvey.</p><p>Frank Mahovlich mentioned this better distribution of power the other day when discussing his goal productivity, which has declined somewhat this winter, although there&rsquo;s certainly nothing wrong with eight goals in 17 games.</p><p>Every club in professional sports has turnabout players who are bearcats in front of a friendly audience and coasters the rest of the time. This isn&rsquo;t a fatal ailment because half the schedule always is played at home.</p><p>Punch Imlach, Leafs&rsquo; coach and general manager, isn&rsquo;t one hundred per cent satisfied with his performers. For example, in the seven-game set ending Nov. 19, Leafs lost four, all on the road, and won three.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s early to panic,&rdquo; says Imlach. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had a tough schedule. But we&rsquo;re ready to make changes quickly if the club gets in any kind of trouble.&rdquo;</p><p>Imlach can talk that way because Leafs are loaded with reserves. Seated on his bench, getting into action only occasionally, are Billy Harris, Ron Stewart and Johnny McMillan. And in Rochester, he has a splendid crop of youngsters, including Bruce Draper, Larry Keenan, Les Kozak, and others.</p><p>Leafs can count on the same cousins this season as last. That&rsquo;s Detroit Red Wings, against whom Leafs won five and tied five in 14 games last winter. Big reversal came in the 1961 playoffs, when Red Wings surprisingly ousted Toronto. Things are back to normal now. Leafs won their first four games from Detroit.</p><p>On the road last season, Leafs won six games in Boston, four in Detroit and five in New York.</p><p>Even the improving Bruins knocked them off in the Garden Nov. 19.</p><p>This is what Mahovlich means when he says it&rsquo;s getting tougher this season. Bruins, who looked hopeless in October, are coming around nicely. Chicago, off to a slow start, is gathering momentum. Rangers have been a surprise and so have Canadiens, considering Jean Beliveau and Dickie Moore have been out of the lineup.</p><p>Notes: Best feature of Leafs&rsquo; Nov. 18 triumph over Detroit was the improved work of George Armstrong, who got one goal and one assist. The Chief has been a major worry for Leafs this year but this was one of his best efforts ever&hellip;After 17 games, Johnny Bower was two goals ahead, 42-44, of Glenn Hall in the Vezina Trophy competition.</p><p>Sam Stanley returned to the Leaf lineup Nov. 18 but saw only limited action. It&rsquo;ll take a while to get his injured knee limbered up&hellip;Larry Hillman&rsquo;s damaged shoulder will take another month to return to normal&hellip;One of the most improved Leafs this season has been defenceman Carl Brewer&hellip;Bobby Baun reveals he almost forsook hockey to try his luck as a fullback in professional football&hellip;Dick Duff&rsquo;s return to top form has been as noticeable as that of Brewer&hellip;Dave Keon was supposed to miss a game because of flu but played against Detroit, and played well, despite the fact his only nourishment in 48 hours had been a bowl of soup&hellip;Bert Olmstead has been averaging better than a point a game since returning to the active roster&hellip;Red Kelly went 16 games before getting his first penalty of the 1961-62 season&mdash;he retaliated when slashed by Leo LaBine&hellip;Jerry Cheevers returned to Leafs after filling in for injured Gerry McNamara at Pittsburgh.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Great At Home, A Flop On Road Story Of Leafs

He was mowed down just as flat as if his name had been Lou Fontinato.</p><p>On Leaf&rsquo;s bench afterwards, Olmstead, who is one of Shack&rsquo;s patient, long-suffering instructors, delivered a stern lecture.</p><p>Grabbing a fistful of his own jersey, Olmstead demanded: &ldquo;What color is this sweater, Shack?&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;Why, it&rsquo;s blue,&rdquo; Eddie replied, mystified.</p><p>&ldquo;What color sweaters do the Maple Leafs wear?&rdquo; Olmstead continued.</p><p>&ldquo;Blue,&rdquo; Shack answered, as he began to receive the message.</p><p>&ldquo;Well.&rdquo; Olmstead summed up, &ldquo;when you see <i>a</i> blue sweater in front of you, change direction from now on.&rdquo;</p><h2><b>Rescue Squad If Needed</b><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></h2>

Blue Is Blue And Don’t Forget It, Bert Tells Ed

<div class="byline">By JACK BERRY</div><p>DETROIT, Mich.&mdash;</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-03277/1739333-1-eng-US/f0002-032.jpg" title="f0002-03" width="298" height="421"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Jack Adams</b></figcaption></div><p>It&rsquo;s beginning to look a lot like not only Christmas but another one of those cliff-hanging seasons for the Detroit Red Wings.</p><p>And how often can a coach plead with professional athletes to &ldquo;win one for the Gipper?&rdquo; Or, since Sid Abel isn&rsquo;t Knute Rockne of Notre Dame but rather Sid Abel of Olympia, &ldquo;win one for Bruce Norris.&rdquo;</p><p>Mr. Norris doesn&rsquo;t need the money. But Mr. Abel would like to win a few games somewhere along the 70-game line. Even a two or three-game winning streak, modest as it is, would be greeted almost like the Stanley Cup.</p><p>And how often can a coach juggle lines? Abel is fast running out of numerical possibilities after his latest manoeuvers.</p><p>While Red Wing general manager Jack Adams, never known as the jolliest of elfs when his club is sinking, was warming himself in California in mid-November, watching his Edmonton farm club, Abel was back in the chilly east getting quite warm himself.</p><p>After blowing past the Montreal Canadiens, 3-0, to end a home stand and take a two-point hold on fourth place, the Wings immediately surrendered Red Hay&rsquo;s finest two goals of the season and lost, 2-0, in Chicago.</p><p>Now that wasn&rsquo;t too bad. But what followed was.</p><p>The Wings went into Maple Leaf Gardens and the Leafs just about chased them out onto Yonge Street with a 6-1 thrashing.</p><p>The folks in Toronto, after four victories over Detroit in as many starts this fall, are really puzzled now, wondering how the Wings could have eliminated Toronto so handily in the playoff semifinals last spring.</p><p>It&rsquo;s simple. The Wings were a moving group then. But when they&rsquo;ve played Toronto, and a few others, this season, they&rsquo;ve done little right and a lot wrong. The checking that set the Leafs back in the spring, was lost somewhere during the summer.</p><p>Abel&rsquo;s answer has been harder practices, several times additional practice and a constant search for scoring units.</p><p>He has come up with several combinations that click for a few games and then have trouble getting the puck over their own blue line.</p><p>Even the hoped-for big line of Alex Delvecchio, Eddie Litzenberger and Gordie Howe, after a sizzling start in which Litz scored six goals in the first six games, tapered off.</p><p>And when the Howe line doesn&rsquo;t score, the Red Wings are in serious trouble.</p><p>The Red Wings&rsquo; three best forwards are Howe, Delvecchio and Ullman. It&rsquo;s been that way since Ted Lindsay left four years ago.</p><p>But the Wings have been hesitant to put all their scoring punch on one line. They&rsquo;ve done it when things got bad but each time, the three were broken up to add a threat to at least one other line.</p><p>Abel went back to the successful combination after the club played so poorly in Toronto and the next night the Wings skated to a 6-2 victory in Boston.</p><p>Ullman scored two of the goals, Howe had one and two assists and Delvecchio had a pair of assists.</p><p>It was an important victory&mdash;a four-pointer. The Wings went into it tied with Chicago for fourth place on 13 points. Boston, its rookies getting stronger all the time, was only two points back and another defeat for Detroit, with half of its six-game road swing to go, could spell last place.</p><p>Ullman, Howe and Delvecchio came through that time.</p><p>But this on-again, off-again existence, if it continues, points to several things if, history is correct&hellip;and it has been.</p><p>Adams will be shopping around for that midseason trade to supply a spark and the Wings will be going into March uncertain of a place in the playoffs. It was that way last year and the year before.</p><p>However, it could be much more difficult for the Wings this season with New York having strengthened itself and Boston improving all the time.</p><p>After all, who would have taken a bet that the Bruins could knock off Toronto and Montreal in successive games? No one else has done it.</p><p><b>ICE CHIPS:</b> The Red Wings went five periods without scoring a goal on their six-game trip around the League.</p><p>Chicago&rsquo;s Glen Hall blanked them, 2-0, and in the next start, the Wings didn&rsquo;t get one &lsquo;past Toronto&rsquo;s Johnny Bower until the third period and that was the only one they did get in a 6-1 defeat. The Wings haven&rsquo;t won a regular season game in Toronto in more than a year.</p><p>In the first six weeks of the season there were five shutouts and Detroit was involved in four of them, winning two (1-0 over New York and 3-0 over Montreal) and losing to Boston (4-0) and Chicago.</p><p>Terry Sawchuck&rsquo;s appearance in the Wings&rsquo; 6-2 victory over the Bruins was only his second in Boston Garden since the 1959-60 season.</p><p>Hank Bassen was in goal during six of Detroit&rsquo;s seven visits to Boston last season and the one previous time the Wings went there this fall.</p><p>But Bassen has been detailed to the Edmonton Flyers of the Western League while Dennis Riggin recovers from an eye injury. Bassen, who split the Detroit duties almost evenly with Sawchuck last season, had only one start with the Wings this year and it resulted in a 4-0 setback in Boston.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Adams May Sharpen Trading Hook If Wings Don’t Start

<div class="byline">By HARRY MOLTER</div><div class="image-hero"><img title="f0003-01" src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01319/1739364-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Ken Wharram&hellip;&hellip;Patience Pays Off</b></figcaption></div><p>CHICAGO, III&mdash;</p><p>As recently as four seasons ago Ken Wharram was resigned to the life of a minor league hockey player.</p><p>He had been in the Chicago Black Hawks&rsquo; organization since signing a &ldquo;C&rdquo; form with the Galt Black Hawks juniors in 1949. He had come up for a one-game tryout with the parent Chicago Hawks in the spring of 1952 and played 29 games with them during the 1953-54 season&mdash;scoring one goal and seven assists. Twice he had been to training camp with Chicago and one other time he had filled in for three games when somebody was injured.</p><p>But for the rest of his professional hockey career little Ken Wharram had been relegated to the minor leagues. He sat out one season with a broken shoulder, played part of a year with the Quebec Aces, and spent the other four seasons with Chicago&rsquo;s Buffalo farm team in the American Hockey League. Here he played mostly at center and was a top scorer, netting 33, 27, 28 and 31 goals each year from 1954-55 through the 1957-58 season.</p><p>&ldquo;I had pretty much adjusted to the life of a minor league hockey player,&rdquo; admits Ken. &ldquo;They didn&rsquo;t seem to want me in Chicago and I was actually pretty content at Buffalo. I had been a 20-goal or better man every year there and was far from discouraged. Disappointed, perhaps, at not getting a better chance at the NHL. But not discouraged. I had always been serious about making hockey my career and my wife and I were happy at Buffalo&rdquo;.</p><p>Even when the Black Hawks, who had sold Wharram outright to Buffalo, traded defenseman Frank Martin and forward Wally Hergesheimer to Buffalo for Ken in the summer of 1958, Wharram did not get too excited.</p><p>When Ken arrived at Chicago&rsquo;s training camp in St. Catharines that fall one of the first men he saw was scout Bob Wilson, who had originally signed Wharram for the Galt juniors.</p><p>&ldquo;What do you think about being with the Black Hawks?&rdquo; Wilson said to Wharram.</p><p>&ldquo;Who are you kidding?&rdquo; said a somewhat surprised Wharram. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m 25 years old now. They didn&rsquo;t want me when I was younger. Why should they want me now. It&rsquo;ll be the same old story. Up for camp and a few games and then back to Buffalo.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s not so,&rdquo; replied scout Wilson. &ldquo;You&rsquo;re with this club until you prove you don&rsquo;t belong. Now get out there and show them how you can skate.&rdquo;</p><p>Says Wharram of this conversation: &ldquo;That gave me a big lift. For the first time I felt the club really did want me and would give me a fair try. I really put my heart into it after that and gained a lot of confidence. It was touch and go for a year or more and I appreciate the patience Coach Rudy Pilous had with me. Now that I&rsquo;m up I realize there&rsquo;s only one place to play hockey and that&rsquo;s in the National Hockey League.&rdquo;</p><p>That year Chicago had two set lines&mdash;the &ldquo;Pappy Line&rdquo; with Sloan, Litzenberger and Lindsay; and Bobby Hull centering for Eric Nesterenko and Ron Murphy. Wharram had to scratch for turns at center and right wing on the third line with Phil Maloney, Danny Lewicki, John McKenzie and Lome Ferguson. He ended up with 10 goals and 9 assists.</p><p>The next season he was again an extra forward although he saw some regular action at right wing with Stan Mikita at center and Ted Lindsay at left wing. He also played for a while with Sloan and Murphy.</p><p>&ldquo;I learned a lot from Lindsay and so did Stan, who was a rookie that year. Ted was great with young players. He talked to us a lot and stressed the importance of backchecking,&rdquo; says Wharram.</p><p>It was at the start of last season that Ken really felt he had arrived with the Black Hawks to stay. In training camp he was put on a line with Mikita at center and big Ab McDonald, obtained during the off-season from Montreal, on left wing. Their hustle and drive soon earned them the nickname of the &ldquo;Scooter Line&rdquo;. It was their spurt during December and January which pulled the Black Hawks out of a terrible midseason slump and carried them into third place and the Stanley Cup playoffs against five-time champion Montreal in the first round. For the season Mikita had 19 goals, McDonald 17 and Wharram 16.</p><p>&ldquo;Our line fits togetner well because we&rsquo;re different types,&rdquo; says right winger Wharram. &ldquo;McDonald is the big guy who comes back and gets you started and moves into the attacking zone late and backs you up. Stan is the playmaker and I guess my skating in from the wing helps to open up the play some.</p><p>&ldquo;Mikita is my type of eenterman. He can skate, he&rsquo;s heady and he&rsquo;s smart. He goes over the blueline with the puck, shifts around a couple of guys until you get in position and then hits you with a perfect pass. He&rsquo;s got the knack to give you a soft pass that won&rsquo;t bounce or glance off. It&rsquo;s always right there and easy to handle.&rdquo;</p><p>In the playoffs, as Chicago upset Montreal and went on to win the Stanley Cup in six games from Detroit, the Mikita-Wharram-Mc-Donald line notched 11 goals. Wharram scored three times and had five assists. He also had 12 minutes in penalties&mdash;as many in 12 playoff games as he had all season in 64 regular games.</p><p>&ldquo;I guess you get a little fired up in the playoffs,&rdquo; I don&rsquo;t usually go throwing my weight around,&rdquo; says Wharram&mdash;who weighs all of 165 pounds after a heavy meal.</p><p>Actually, Wharram had broken his jaw several weeks before the playoffs and had been eating through a straw part of that time. His weight had dropped to around 157 pounds.</p><p>&ldquo;I really felt good,&rdquo; says Ken. &ldquo;I felt like I was flying along every time on the ice.&rdquo; Wharram&rsquo;s play in the playoffs, along with that of Bobby Hull, was one of the finest jobs of two-way hockey&mdash;up and down the ice and backchecking and stealing opponent&rsquo;s passes before they got into the Chicago defensive zone, seen in many years.</p><p>&ldquo;I started this year around 165 pounds but I know from playoffs last year that I skate better at around 160.&rdquo; Ken says.</p><p>Ken is the smallest man on the Chicago team at 5 ft. 9 in. and 160 to 165 pounds. He is also one of the quietest and one of the more studious types. He comes from Ferris, Ont., a suburb of North Bay where he now lives with his wife&mdash;a hometown girl, and two children.</p><p>Ken&rsquo;s first skates were hand-me-downs from his older brother who quit hockey at high school age to work on the railroad. Ken&rsquo;s dad was a semi-pro soccer player in England but never did any skating.</p><p>As a boy Ken played center in public school, midget and junior B hockey for North Bay Collegiate high school. He then played a year for the CNR Indians and signed his &ldquo;C&rdquo; form with the Galt Black Hawks when he had just turned 16 (Ken was born July 2, 1933). He played for them for three years, from 1949-50 through the 1951-52 season. Ex-Black Hawk forward Red Hamill was Ken&rsquo;s coach during one of those years and from him Wharram learned much about deflecting shots and other tips in and around the net.</p><p>In the spring of 1952 Ken had a one-game tryout with the parent Chicago club and played between Bep Guidolin and Jerry Couture. When he returned to Galt he was checked hard in Toronto and broke his shoulder. Wharram turned pro and reported to the Black Hawks training camp the next fall but a hard check by Lee Fogolin on the same shoulder which had not healed properly resulted in Wharram being out of hockey for the entire season.</p><p>Still a eenter, Wharram played for the Quebec Aces the next year before being called up early in 1954 for 29 games with Chicago. He played between Murray Costello and Pete Conacher and in the season finale had a goal and four assists against Boston.</p><p>Coach Sid Abel was impressed and told Wharram&mdash;who weighed 150 pounds at that time, to go home and put on some weight during the off-season.</p><p>This Ken did, getting up to 165 pounds. But when he reported to training camp the next fall Abel had been fired and new coach Frank Eddolls listed him on the bulletin board with those who were &ldquo;overweight.&rdquo;</p><p>Ken spent the next four seasons at Buffalo as Eddolls, Dick Irvin, Tommy Ivan and finally Rudy Pilous coached the Black Hawks.</p><p>&ldquo;I was really disappointed,&rdquo; says Wharram. &ldquo;Chicago was going nowhere with older players. I figured if they didn&rsquo;t want me when I was young and they weren&rsquo;t winning that I would never get a real chance with them. I think one trouble was that Irvin liked big centers and at my size I just didn&rsquo;t fit in with his plans.&rdquo;</p><p>Wharram played center his first three seasons at Buffalo, centering such players as Ed Slowinski, Gaye Stewart, Dick Gamble and Sam Bettio. His best year was 1955-56 when he scored 27 goals and had 63 assists for 90 points.</p><p>In the fall of 1957 Harry Watson, in his first year as coach at Buffalo, changed Wharram from a center to a right wing. He played on a line with Larry Wilson at center and Pete Conacher at left wing.</p><p>&ldquo;It was the best thing that happened to me,&rdquo; says Ken. &ldquo;A center does a lot of roaming and with my physical build I became tired quickly. On the wing I wasn&rsquo;t as tired and I found I had a good burst of speed going straight in from the blueline. I liked the position and I also figured that since Chicago didn&rsquo;t want me as a center I might as well try another position where they might need me more.&rdquo;</p><p>How right Ken Wharram was in this assumption and, when his big chance came the next fall in training camp, he was ready and waiting to skate into the big time for good.</p><h2><b>Made The Most Of His Chance</b><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></h2>

<p><b>IN THE TORONTO STAR</b></p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0004-07136/1739547-1-eng-US/f0004-072.jpg" title="f0004-07" width="319" height="455"></div><h2><b><i>The Blush And The Breakaway</i></b></h2><p>BOB PULFORD&rsquo;S trademarks are <i>a</i> blazing breakaway and a crimson complexion. One complements the other. To understand the situation, you must remember that Pulford&rsquo;s specialties for the prospering Leafs are (a) killing penalties; (b) shooting goals while the Torontos are short-handed.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0004-08114/1739540-1-eng-US/f0004-082.jpg" title="f0004-08" width="540" height="522"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Bob Pulford</b></figcaption></div><p>There are maybe a million hockey fans in Canada who would reverse that order. Their image of Pulford is one of a man who grabs the stick-up guy&rsquo;s gun and pokes it in his kisser. At a desperate moment when Leafs are on the verge of caving in, under pressure of the other team&rsquo;s power play, a blue and white rocket emerges from the melee and the whole flow of warfare suddenly changes direction.</p><p>It&rsquo;s Pulford on a breakaway. There are few more spectacular sights in hockey. Underdogs everywhere are thrilled by the spectacle of the downtrodden suddenly becoming the aggressor. All alone, at the opposite end of the rink, there&rsquo;s a goaltender going into a crouch and tensing his muscles for a duel which he knows is a cinch to go against him.</p><p>This is a drama which has made Pulford almost as heroic as Marshall Dillon stalking down the dusty street for another shooting match from which he almost invariably emerges as the winner. It also has made Pulford a few quid in salary.</p><p>Two seasons back, Bob scored nine goals on break aways and wound up with a 24-goal season. This total was impressive when it came time to talk money with his shrewd leader, Punch Imlach. After much stick-handling, Pulford acquired a healthy increase in stipend.</p><p>Last season, he got away to a slow start. Then he was hurt and missed about 30 games. It was a year he would prefer to forget. Now, he&rsquo;s back on the old beat&mdash;but with some misgivings. He&rsquo;s not even sure it&rsquo;s an honorable thing to be shooting goals when he&rsquo;s supposed to be killing off penalties. It&rsquo;s a little bit like picking up a buck when you&rsquo;re sweeping out the hall after the bingo. Does the buck belong to the sweeper?</p><h2><b><i>The Back-Fire Is Embarrassing</i></b></h2><p>&ldquo;There&rsquo;s a great deal of danger attached to this business of getting goals while your team is short-handed,&rdquo; Pulford admits. &ldquo;The question arises of just how much risk you should take. After all, your main purpose is to keep the other team from scoring while you&rsquo;re shorthanded.</p><p>&ldquo;Here&rsquo;s an example of what I mean. The other night in New York, I figured we had the Rangers set up for a breakaway. Davey Keon had taken out his man&mdash;Doug Harvey. The puck is loose. So I sail over to get it. Harvey is off-balance but he manages to tip the puck to (Andy) Bathgate. From there it goes to Earl Ingarfield. Then it&rsquo;s in our net. Instead of scoring while we&rsquo;re short-handed, we&rsquo;ve got a goal against us while we&rsquo;re killing off a penalty. It&rsquo;s very embarrassing if the puck gets trapped just as you launch your breakaway.&rdquo;</p><p>That would account for Pulford&rsquo;s red face when the breakaway backfires. It might even account for a red face when he&rsquo;s successful, because die-hard conservatives on skates are reluctant to applaud a goal by a penalty-killer.</p><p>Several years ago, Bert Olmstead was with the Canadiens. They were playing a Stanley Cup final in Toronto. With the clock running out, Joe Primeau, who was coaching Leafs, lifted his goalie, and threw out an extra forward for a faceoff in the Habs&rsquo; end of the rink.</p><p>Leafs had the old smoothie, Max Bentley, at one of the points. Teeder Kennedy, who was playing centre, got the draw and the puck slid forward toward Max, One Hab, who shall remain nameless, pounced on the puck&mdash;or tried to. Another Hab broke with him. Bentley outsmarted them. Leafs scored and went on to win in overtime.</p><p>Since that night, Olmstead has been a confirmed advocate of penalty-killing for the penalty-killers. Only in rare situations should penalty-killers be gunning for goals, he maintains. He and Pulford often make this a subject for full-dress debate.</p><p>So you see why Pulford&rsquo;s built-in blush goes with that blazing breakaway.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<div class="byline">By ROGER BARRY</div><p>BOSTON, Mass.&mdash;</p><p>Hockey life for 21-year-old Pat Stapleton of the Bruins has been just one test after another.</p><p>Reason: He lacks the size which is conventional with defensemen.</p><p>Two years ago he was the smallest boy on the St. Catharines team which played in the Ontario Junior Hockey Association.</p><p>But St. Catharines won the Canadian junior championship and the smallest boy was named to the OJHA all-star team.</p><p>Last season Stapleton was the smallest defenseman in the Eastern Professional League, in which he played as a member of the Sault Ste. Marie (Ont.) Thunderbirds.</p><p>But the smallest defenseman led his team in assists and was named to the EPL&rsquo;s second all-star team.</p><p>And this fall, despite his lack of size, he has won a regular job with the Bruins and become a darling of New England hockey fans.</p><p>Stapleton, a strawberry blond from Sarnia, Ontario, stands five-feet-seven&mdash;and doesn&rsquo;t look it. He weighs 175 pounds&mdash;and doesn&rsquo;t look it.</p><p>Hockey has known defensemen who were forwards originally but moved to defense by coaches requiring the use of their size. One who made such a transition was Bill Quackenbush, a center as a high schooler and an all-star defenseman with the Bruins.</p><p>But none of Stapleton&rsquo;s coaches ever tried reversing the procedure and moving stubby Pat from defense to forward, for lack of size. Why not?</p><p>Shrugged the colorful Bruins&rsquo; rookie, &ldquo;Maybe no one thought it was worthwhile. Maybe no one figured I&rsquo;d ever go any place.&rdquo;</p><p>Lynn Patrick, Bruins&rsquo; manager who paid the Chicago Black Hawks $20,000 for Stapleton in the draft last spring, recalls his first impression of his prize.</p><p>&ldquo;The first time I saw him he was with St. Catharines and I thought to myself, he&rsquo;s an awfully good little half-pint of a junior player,&rdquo; said Patrick.</p><p>&ldquo;I remember watching him check players and thinking he would never be able to do it as a professional.&rdquo;</p><p>So when Patrick had his first look at Stapleton playing with Sault Ste. Marie last winter he was surprised. Said the Bruins&rsquo; boss, &ldquo;I was surprised he was able to check bigger players as a pro just as he had done as a junior.&rdquo; But before Patrick made the acquisition of little Pat an objective, he put the stubby defenseman under the equivalent of a microscope. Besides scouting Stapleton himself, Lynn had him scouted by Milt Schmidt, Harold Cotton and Phil Watson, Stapleton&rsquo;s present coach.</p><p>Their consensus was &ldquo;smart enough, quick enough, but is he big enough?&rdquo; The inquisitive Watson may have settled that issue in a hotel lobby in Kingston, Ontario, during the EPL playoffs.</p><p>Walking up to Stapleton, Watson asked, &ldquo;How much do you weigh?&rdquo;</p><p>Replied Stapleton, &ldquo;I weigh 175 pounds.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;We didn&rsquo;t realize he was that big,&rdquo; confessed Patrick, &ldquo;and he doesn&rsquo;t look it on the ice. But there are other fellows who&rsquo;ll fool you the same way. He&rsquo;s a lot bigger than he looks.&rdquo;</p><p>So the Bruins invested in Stapleton and this fall &ldquo;Whitey,&rdquo; as his teammates call him, passed his final test. He convinced Bruins&rsquo; officials he could cope with the kingsized characters in the National League.</p><p>&ldquo;He had to convince me,&rdquo; said Patrick. &ldquo;1&rsquo;11 admit I was skeptical that he could handle the heavyweights, but he did all right in our exhibition games and he&rsquo;s doing all right now.&rdquo;</p><p>Pointed out Watson, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s very strong through the chest, shoulders and arms and he&rsquo;s set on his feet like (Leo) Boivin. He&rsquo;s big in ways it counts.&rdquo;</p><p>Stapleton&rsquo;s alert style of play, first as the defense partner for his Sarnia neighbor Bob Armstrong. then with Doug Mohns since Armstrong&rsquo;s departure, has delighted hockey audiences here. Even after moving to right defense, a position completely strange, he had done well.</p><p>Today Patrick expresses his original opinion of Patrick James Stapleton with only a slight change.</p><p>Says Patrick, &ldquo;He&rsquo;s an awfully good little half-pint of a major league player.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Ivan Knew He Was Losing Good Player In Stapleton

<p>BOSTON, Mass.&mdash;</p><p>The Bruins&rsquo; strong accent on youth this season has the approval of a hockey executive who has seen his own moves in that direction pay off in the winning of Stanley Cups.</p><p>&ldquo;The Bruins are on the right track at last,&rdquo; said Frank Selke, managing director of the Montreal Canadiens, National League champions.</p><p>&ldquo;They&rsquo;ve brought in young players from whom they can expect years of good service. Some of them should be dominant players.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-02310/1739657-1-eng-US/f0005-022.jpg" title="f0005-02" width="283" height="421"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Frank Selke</b></figcaption></div><p>&ldquo;Formerly the Bruins relied on veterans acquired from other teams,&rdquo; said Selke, &ldquo;and Milt Schmidt did a wonderful job of getting the best possible out of them.</p><p>&ldquo;But the veterans were only good for a year or two. These young players will last.&rdquo;</p><p>Among the young Bruins whom Selke feels are the dominant type is Terence &ldquo;Terry&rdquo; Gray, the 23-year-old right wing whom they acquired from him last spring.</p><p>&ldquo;He&rsquo;s a dominant player,&rdquo; opined the astute Montreal boss. &ldquo;He&rsquo;ll win some games for the Bruins. Of course he may lose some, too, but that&rsquo;s the way it is with a player who does things.&rdquo;</p><p>Selke saw a youth movement instituted by him pay Off for another team in 1947, when the Toronto Maple Leafs, stocked with youngsters of his choosing, won the Stanley Cup. By that time Selke, once Toronto&rsquo;s business manager, was busy making a power of the Canadiens.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Bruins On Bight Track With Books, Says Selke

<p>BOSTON, Mass.&mdash;Besides playing defense for the Bruins, rookie Pat Stapleton also has another assignment.</p><p>He&rsquo;s the Bruins&rsquo; emergency goalkeeper.</p><p>Sometimes after practices this fall Stapleton has borrowed Don Head&rsquo;s goalkeeper&rsquo;s glove and moved into the net, where his Bruins&rsquo; teammates have peppered him for as long as 20 minutes at a time.</p><p>Under ordinary circumstances should Head be unable to complete a game, his replacement will be the standby goalkeeper for the NHL rink in which the Bruins are playing. But should Head have to leave a game for extra-ordinary circumstances, Stapleton will take his place.</p><p>Little Pat played goal for a while when he was in grammar school.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<p class="dropcap"><span>M</span>ONTREAL, Que.&mdash;It&rsquo;s taken a long time for Claude Provost to prove that he&rsquo;s a major leaguer. But he&rsquo;s doing it this year, and Coach Toe Blake is mighty glad of it. Leading the NHL in goal scoring is a new feeling for the 28-year-old French Canadian, but he isn&rsquo;t letting it go to his head. He&rsquo;s a little amazed by the gallons of ink he&rsquo;s been given by writers all around the National Hockey League.</p><p>This is Provost&rsquo;s seventh season with the Habs, and it looks as though it will be his most productive. In his first 20 games of the year he had scored 16 goals, three more than in the 49 games he played last season.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-03244/1739712-1-eng-US/f0005-032.jpg" title="f0005-03" width="283" height="436"></div><p>Quiet Claude is one of the hardest workers in the league. He plays a regular turn at right wing and kills penalties too. He has one of the most deceptive wrist shots in the league and one of the most accurate, particularly on breakaways.</p><p>Provost started the season with 92 goals to his career and his 16 this season has upped that total to 108. His total assists in 385 games played prior to this year were 117.</p><p>Born in Montreal, Provost played one year of minor league hockey in Shawinigan Falls, Quebec, before being called by the Canadiens.</p><p>Everybody is hoping Claude can hit the 20 goal mark in scoring this season. It will be the first time he has. He deserves it for surely he&rsquo;s Your Kind Of Player.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<div class="byline">By STAN FISCHLER</div><p>NEW YORK, N.Y,&mdash;</p><p>Guy Gendron, the excitable left wing, scored seven goals in a hurry for the Rangers then hit the skids and now people are wondering whether Guy can pull out of it.</p><p>Last year, when the compact Montrealer was touched by the magic wand and sent from last place Boston to first-place Canadiens, he quickly scored a raft of goals for the Habs and slowly faded away.</p><p>&ldquo;If they&rsquo;d put me on a third line,&rdquo; said Gendron, &ldquo;I&rsquo;d probably have done better. But they put me with Beliveau and Geoffrion and people expected so much more.&rdquo;</p><p>Since Guy gets upset in the presence of super-stars, the Rangers tried to accommodate him with a couple of mortals for linemates&mdash;Ken Schinkel, a right wing and Jean Ratelle, the rookie center.</p><p>For a time this third line was playing like a first unit.</p><p>&ldquo;We got a line that&rsquo;s working well together,&rdquo; said Guy, who rooms with Ratelle, Camille Henry and Irv Spencer in Long Beach. &ldquo;Schink has been playing well and gets us a lot of chances. Ratelie plays better every game. He&rsquo;s going to be a very good hockey player.&rdquo;</p><p>Apparently, Ratelle is the balance-wheel of the line. When he&rsquo;s &ldquo;on&rdquo; Gendron and Schinkel move. Last week Ratelle slumped. So did the others.</p><p>&ldquo;We have to keep Jean going,&rdquo; Schinkel admitted.</p><p>As for Gendron, some mystics believe his mere presence on the Rangers will assure them of a playoff berth. Only once in Guy&rsquo;s six NHL seasons has his team missed the marbles.</p><p>In Gendron&rsquo;s rookie year (195556) the Rangers made the playoffs for the first time in six years. When he went to Boston four years later, the B&rsquo;s finished second. They missed the following semester although he whacked home 24 goals.</p><p>When Canadiens imported Gendron last Winter, the Habs were a point out of first. He scored the winning goal in his initial game and the Habs were on top.</p><p>Muzz Patrick, the Rangers g.m., wasn&rsquo;t impressed enough with Guy to want to pay $20,000 for him in the draft. But Doug Harvey changed Muzz&rsquo;s mind. Now Gen-dron hopes to justify Harvey&rsquo;s faith.</p><h2>Halted</h2><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0006-01410/1739743-1-eng-US/f0006-012.jpg" title="f0006-01" width="543" height="527"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Guy Gendron</b></figcaption></div><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve got my confidence back,&rdquo; said the black-haired Gendron. &ldquo;I was a good scorer as a kid but with the Rangers before I never got enough ice. Then I got my confidence back at Boston but last season I lost it a little.&rdquo;</p><p>The on-again-off-again Guy regained the confidence with the Canadiens and lost it just as easily.</p><p>&ldquo;I was going good with Beliveau and Geoffrion but then I hurt my knee. I had to wear a brace for a while and I couldn&rsquo;t get going. When the line had a bad game, I usually got the blame. No matter how badly they played.&rdquo;</p><p>Gendron is in the prime of his career, a strong specimen&rsquo; with good legs and a fair shot. If he works hard&mdash;which probably is the key factor in his success&mdash;there&rsquo;s no doubt that he&rsquo;ll get moving again. Otherwise, trouble.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Rangers Hoping Cooled Out Guy Gets Hot Again

Mass.&mdash;</p><p>If Don Head has become a marked man among National League goalkeepers, the distinction doesn&rsquo;t bother him.</p><p>The NHL rules committee has decided by majority vote that Head, the aggressive Bruin, has not been violating Rule 32 (h) in fights with members of other teams.</p><p>But some executives of other teams have not been hesitant in expressing their disapproval of the conduct of the 200-pound Bruins&rsquo; rookie.</p><p>&ldquo;You tell that fellow to keep his stick to himself,&rdquo; said one executive to Lynn Patrick, &ldquo;or I&rsquo;ll send one of my players out there to cut his head off.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;If you do that,&rdquo; replied Patrick coldly, &ldquo;you&rsquo;d better make sure you send one of your biggest players.&rdquo;</p><p>Head drew major penalities for fights with Detroit&rsquo;s Vic Stasiuk and Montreal&rsquo;s Marcel Bonin in his first dozen NHL games. He also had a scuffle with Detroit&rsquo;s Gordie Howe.</p><p>In a game here Bonin skated by the Bruins&rsquo; goal, waved his stick at Head and shouted, &ldquo;I cut you head off!&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;Well there&rsquo;s no time like the present,&rdquo; responded Head, sailing after the Montreal forward. &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve got a stick, too. Let&rsquo;s get at it.&rdquo; Officials intervened.</p><p>How does Head take the furor he has stirred up? Strictly in stride.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s all part of the game,&rdquo; he shrugged. &ldquo;They come into me. My job is in goal, so I can&rsquo;t very well go out after them. But I don&rsquo;t have to take anything, either.&rdquo;</p><p>In a recent Detroit game here Head and Stasiuk engaged in a race for a loose puck. Head won, and as he made a clearing pass Stasiuk crashed into him. But the big Detroit wing pitched over the goalie&rsquo;s back.</p><p>&ldquo;He tried to lay the lumber to me,&rdquo; snapped Head afterward. &ldquo;He was trying to cross-check me, but I got out of his line.</p><p>&ldquo;But that&rsquo;s all part of the game,&rdquo; he said, shrugging again. &ldquo;He plays it hard, that&rsquo;s all.&rdquo;</p><p>One executive of another NHL team says he doesn&rsquo;t approve of Head&rsquo;s tactics, explaining, &ldquo;If he thinks he can take on the whole League, he&rsquo;s mistaken.&rdquo;</p><p>When Patrick read the observation he said, &ldquo;I want him to take on the whole League. He plays better that way.&rdquo;</p><p>The Bruins believe other teams, inspired by Head&rsquo;s 101 minutes in penalties with Portland of the Western League a year ago, have been waging campaigns to annoy and distract their goalkeeper.</p><p>Patrick doesn&rsquo;t think he has ever seen other teams&rsquo; forwards attempt to set up shop on the Bruins&rsquo; doorstep as much as they have this season.</p><p>&ldquo;Of course I could be mistaken,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Maybe they think they&rsquo;re taking advantage of our young defensemen.</p><p>&ldquo;But one thing I know,&rdquo; added the Bruins&rsquo; manager. &ldquo;They won&rsquo;t take advantage of Head. He&rsquo;ll get them out of there, one way or another.&rdquo;</p><p>The night Head and Bonin wrangled here the remains of a myth were demolished here by the fists of another Bruin, 23-year-old Terry Gray. The rookie right wing gave a shellacking to Lou Fontinato, erstwhile badman of the New York Rangers now with Montreal, with a barrage of punches, one of which cut Fontinato over the eye. “A STATISTICAL MASTERPIECE!”

<div class="byline">By ROGER BARRY</div><p>BOSTON, Mass.&mdash;</p><p>If industry on the part of their coach can help, the Bruins should continue to improve this season.</p><p>There are no distractions, no outside interests for Phil Watson. His only concern is the Bruins, the Bruins, the Bruins.</p><p>&ldquo;He&rsquo;s in here early every morning, ready for a day&rsquo;s work,&rdquo; said Lynn Patrick, &ldquo;and he doesn&rsquo;t go home (to Needham) until he thinks he has done it.</p><p>&ldquo;Then darned if he doesn&rsquo;t call me an evening or two a week when the team is home to talk over ideas, make a suggestion or something else.&rdquo;</p><p>When Watson and the Bruins reported at their Niagara Falls (Ont.) training base in September, the new coach weighed 192 pounds. He left Niagara Falls weighing 180. Now he weighs 172.</p><p>In Patrick&rsquo;s opinion, Watson sleeps and eats only after the Bruins have won. That means he has neither overslept and overeaten so far this season.</p><p>The night the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Bruins here, 9-1, Patrick said, &ldquo;He won&rsquo;t sleep a wink all night Then he&rsquo;ll be in tomorrow morning full of ideas.&rdquo;</p><p>Patrick was right. One of Patrick&rsquo;s ideas was to return Don Head to goal after a two-game vacation. Another was to bring in burly Bob Beckett from Providence.</p><p>Before the National League season began Watson held early practices because he wanted his players in bed early. Now he holds later practices because, he says, &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t want them hanging around all day.&rdquo;</p><p>Watson&rsquo;s practices are long and they consist almost entirely of fundamentals and combination play. Veteran or rookie, the player who fails to execute a fundamental properly has to make the play again, until Watson is satisfied.</p><p>&ldquo;After all, what is the game but fundamentals?&rdquo; said Patrick. &ldquo;The best players are the ones who execute the fundamentals the best. Some of our players have improved considerably in fundamentals this fall.&rdquo;</p><p>Watson&rsquo;s practices are dull to watch but sometimes they have light moments, such as those he chooses for keeping Head on his toes.</p><p>If Watson becomes ired at Head, he will tell a player, &ldquo;Spray him.&rdquo;. The player will skate in on the goal and brake to a stop, spraying the goalkeeper with snow.</p><p>Or Watson will order his other players to shoot at Head simultaneously, assuming a position like General Charles DeGaulle directing a firing squad and shouting, &ldquo;Fire!&rdquo;</p><p>Watson will not permit a Bruin to leave the ice without permission during practice, nor will he permit the Bruins to drink water while practicing. There is no scientific support for the abstinence bit, but Watson thinks it a good idea.</p><p>In his share of the office which Milt Schmidt also occupies, Watson spends part of each day on bookkeeping. He keeps voluminous records, including the equivalent of the hockey case histories of each of his players. Like Patrick, he types, but unlike the Bruins&rsquo; manager, he uses his own system.</p><p>A sizeable segment of Bruins&rsquo; customers suggests by their comments that they do not care for Watson. How does the coach react to their jibes?</p><p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t even hear them,&rdquo; replied Watson. &ldquo;Let them yell. All I care is whether the Bruins win or lose.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;If we do not get a winning team here then I am not a good coach and I deserve to be yelled at. If we get a winning team, and we will, well. Watson left the sentence unfinished.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Watson’s Whole Life Is Bruins, Bruins and Bruins

<div class="byline">By HARRY MOLTER</div><p>CHICAGO, Ill.&mdash;</p><p>Is Red Hay slowly but surely emerging as the leader of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Black Hawks?</p><p>The big Chicago center certainly has the respect of his teammates. He is one of the slickest puck carriers and stick handlers in the National Hockey League. He is the playmaker who makes the &ldquo;Million Dollar Line&rdquo; with wings Bobby Hull and Murray Balfour tick smoothly on offense. He is the &ldquo;quarterback&rdquo; of the Black Hawks&rsquo; new-found power play.</p><p>In his rookie season two years ago Hay won the Calder Cup as the league&rsquo;s outstanding first year man. He also was second in club scoring and 13th in the league with 18 goals and 37 assists for 55 points.</p><p>Last year he notched 11 goals and 48 assists for 59 points&mdash;11th in the league and tops among the Stanley Cup champion Hawks.</p><p>Also last year, perhaps with added confidence in his own play, the 6 ft. 3 in., 190 pound Hay began to assert himself more on the ice. A Lady Byng type performer his first season and a half, the big read head toward the end of the season began throwing a few elbows around and doing a little heavy checking&mdash;rather than merely taking the puck away from enemy players with his clever stickhandling. He also began shooting the puck at the net more often.</p><p>This year the Black Hawks tied their first two games. Then Hay was sidelined for eight games with a carbuncle on his ankle. During that span Chicago floundered. The once - proud champions won once, tied three and lost four for only five points of a possible 16.</p><p>Chicago lost again on their first game after Hay&rsquo;s return to action. But after that they have won three, tost two and tied one to at least get pointed in the right direction again.</p><p>Of Chicago&rsquo;s last 13 goals Hay has figured in nine&mdash;scoring two and assisting on seven others.</p><p>Hay is not a spectacular type of player in the dashing manner of linemate Hull. Nor is he a big talker in the locker room, or an aggressive spark like Reg Fleming.</p><p>But he is smart and poised and respected. He is also consistent&mdash;seldom a bad game, seldom a mistake either on offense or defensively. He is quiet off the ice but his play commands attention.</p><p>His maturity&mdash;Hay is 26, has a degree from Colorado College is another asset for leadership.</p><p>The Black Hawks need a leader, They can&rsquo;t afford any more floundering this season. Hay Emerging As Chi’s New IceGeneral

<div class="byline">By PAT CURRAN</div><p>MONTREAL, Que.&mdash;</p><p>Coach Toe Blake wasn&rsquo;t pushing the panic button after his team&rsquo;s unsuccessful road trip of only two ties in five games, Montreal&rsquo;s worst string in six seasons. But he was pushing the Canadiens in an effort to correct the mental and defensive lapses they suffered in the five other NHL cities last week.</p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re working on defensive play in our own end&mdash;getting the puck out of there,&rdquo; Blake reported. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been, making too many mistakes inside our blueline. We&rsquo;ll never finish in first place if we can&rsquo;t hold those one-goal leads in the third period.&rdquo;</p><p>The coach was apparenly thinking of three road games when the Habs had the edge and couldn&rsquo;t keep it.</p><p>&ldquo;The worst of it is that I can&rsquo;t lay the blame on any one player. Several different fellows have been at fault. I&rsquo;m hoping to come up with some combination that will be able to hold a lead.&rdquo;</p><p>Blake didn&rsquo;t think that the Habs played so poorly on the recent road trip to deserve only two points out of the possible 10.</p><p>&ldquo;We didn&rsquo;t play so well at Detroit when we lost 3-0 without Geoffrion and Backstrom,&rdquo; reported the coach. &ldquo;But even in that game we hit the post a few times and met some terrific goaltending by Terry Sawchuk.</p><p>&ldquo;We certainly deserved to win at Toronto where we fell asleep and let the Leafs get two goals in 17 seconds to beat us 3-2. I&rsquo;m not saying we should have won at Boston (Bruins won that one 3-2) but with a little luck around the nets we could have earned at least a tie.</p><p>&ldquo;At New York and Chicago our fellows made terrific comebacks and then blew the lead. We got three goals in the second period against the Rangers before they tied it 4-4 in the third period and if Gump Worsley hadn&rsquo;t been so hot we would have won that one.</p><p>&ldquo;There was no excuse, except stupidity, for the 3-3 tie at Chicago. The fellows really fell asleep when they failed to control the puck and let the Hawks tie the game with only six seconds to go.&rdquo;</p><p>When the coach was asked about individual performers, he thought carefully.</p><p>&ldquo;It seems that whenever I praise a player he has a bad game the next night,&rdquo; said the coach.</p><p>Nevertheless, Toe had a few nice things to say about some of his players.</p><p>Blake figured that Gilles Tremblay and Bobby Rousseau were about the only Habs who hadn&rsquo;t played one bad game since the start of the season.</p><p>&ldquo;Gilles Trembaly has been our big surprise after looking so bad in training camp and young Rousseau is working all the time he&rsquo;s on the ice.&rdquo;</p><p>How about Tom Johnson, the defenceman who has been outstanding despite a rash of in sticking duel with Rangers&rsquo; Pat Hannigan?</p><p>&ldquo;Right now Johnson is as good or better than any defenceman in the League. Pretty soon they&rsquo;ll be picking the first half all-stars and 1&rsquo;11 bet for some reason he won&rsquo;t be chosen.&rdquo;</p><p>Blake liked the way Dickie Moore suddenly started skating and shooting.</p><p>&ldquo;I kept telling Dickie that if his knee was sore, I couldn&rsquo;t drive him. If it wasn&rsquo;t he would have to drive himself. Now he&rsquo;s started skating and it looks as though he&rsquo;s on the way back.&rdquo;</p><p>Lou Fontinato and his rash of penalties came up for discussion. In 18 games, the rugged rearguard had a total of 74 minutes and appeared out to break his own record of 202 minutes with Rangers in 1955-56.</p><p>Earlier in the season, Blake rated Louie as his best defenceman. He may not be too happy with Fontinato but is ready to defend him.</p><p>&ldquo;Lou Fontinato is a marked man. Half of his penalties haven&rsquo;t been deserved.&rdquo;</p><p>The last few games of the road trip saw the Habs&rsquo; third line of Phil Goyette, Gilles Tremblay and Billy Hicke driving again after being hampered by a wrist injury to pivot-man Goyette.</p><p>&ldquo;I like the way Billy Hicke has been working,&rdquo; said Blake. &ldquo;He hasn&rsquo;t been scoring but he&rsquo;s been skating hard. <div class="byline">By JACK BERRY</div><p>DETROIT, Mich.&mdash;</p><p>Another record fell to Gordie Howe on Nov. 26.</p><p>The Detroit Red Wing great now is the first player in National Hockey League history to have played in 1,000 regular season games.</p><p>When Howe skated out in Detroit&rsquo;s game at Chicago Stadium he wiped out former teammate Ted Lindsay&rsquo;s mark of 999 games. Howe tied that one on Nov. 23 in Montreal.</p><p>Howe now owns these records:</p><p>1. Most points, regular season: 1069.</p><p>2. Most points, including playoffs: 1174.</p><p>3. Most assists, regular season: 590.</p><p>4. Most assists, Including playoffs: 654.</p><p>5. Most assists, playoffs: 64.</p><p>6. Most points one season by a right wing: 95, shared with Montreal&rsquo;s Bernie Geoffrion.</p><p>7. Most assists one season by a right wing: 49.</p><p>8. Most points in playoff series: 20 (in 11 games, 1954-55).</p><p>9. Fastest goal in a playoff game: April 1, 1954, against Toronto, in nine seconds.</p><p>10. Most games played, regular season: 1.000.</p><p>Howe also shares in several other marks. Combined with Lindsay and Norm Ullman, his line scored 226 points in 1956-57, tops in NHL history and Howe had 89 points that season.</p><p>Add to that one the record of the highest scoring line in any Stanley Cup playoff of the NHL. Howe, Lindsay and Dutch Reibel had 51 points in 1954-55 in 11 games against Toronto and Montreal with Howe getting 20 of them.</p><p>Howe, 33 last March, has been on 12 All-Star teams in his 15 years in the NHL gaining seven first teams and five seconds. He is the only man to ever win the Hart Trophy as the most valuable player in the NHL, five times.</p><p>Everyone is waiting for Howe to slow up&hellip;that is, the other five NHL teams. But the powerful Howe is away to one of his best starts in recent seasons and seems headed back to the 30 goal bracket.</p><p>And if he can keep that up, he would pass Maurice Richard&rsquo;s goal totals in a few years.</p><p>The Rocket scored 544 goals in 18 seasons with Montreal and a total of 626 including playoffs. Howe, playing his 16th season, is 65 behind the Rocket in regular season markers and 41 in Stanley Cup play. Gordie Racks Up Another One—Plays 1,000th Game

<p class="dropcap"><span>C</span>HICAGO, Ill.&mdash;Ken Wharram&rsquo;s biggest thrill in hockey came when the 5 ft. 9 in., 160 pound right wing scored one goal and assisted on two others as Chicago beat Montreal 4-3 in Montreal in the second game of the 1961 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was an important win for Chicago because it evened the series and was their first playoff win against Canadiens in eight tries.</p><p>The key play came when Montreal was pressing the Chicago end and Ken blocked a shot by defenseman Doug Harvey. The puck rebounded toward Montreal territory. Charging into center ice with the entire Montreal team behind him, Wharram delayed just long enough to lure Canadiens&rsquo; goalie Jacques Plante out of the net in a futule attempt to beat Ken to the loose puck. Wharram then put on a burst of speed, swooped down on the puck, swung neatly around the startled Plante and shot the puck from the blueline into an open net.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve heard more about that goal from fans and friends than any goal I ever scored,&rdquo; says Wharram. &ldquo;I guess because Plante has a tendency to roam out of the net and I was lucky enough to catch him when he should have stayed in the goal.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Points Spree In Playoffs Wharram’s Biggest Thrill

<div class="byline">By SAMUEL POMPEI</div><p>SPRINGFIELD, Mass.&mdash;</p><p>Over the past three seasons, the Springfield Indians have almost always enjoyed the benefits of three strong, well-balanced forward lines of near equal all-around ability. And they still do.</p><p>But, generally, the combo pivoted by Bill Sweeney had been considered during the stretch as the No. 1 unit, though club Owner Eddie Shore and Coach Pat Egan preferred to avoid the numeral disignation. Both have felt that one is as good as another.</p><p>In fact, they still refuse to single out any one of their combinations as the big production unit.</p><p>The records, though, give the honors to a combination of Brian Kilrea, Jimmy Anderson and Floyd Smith. They not only rate at the top of the Indians&rsquo; as a scoring line but they are tops in the entire American Hockey League.</p><p>When this story was submitted, Kilrea was the AHL&rsquo;s leading scorer with 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists and his two linemates were right on his tail, Andy with 8-10-18 and Smith with 9-9-18.</p><p>Last year, the Sweeney line with Bruce Cline and Billy McCreary was conceded the scoring edge among the Springfield units and the season before the honors more-or-less belonged to Sweeney, Cline and Parker MacDonald.</p><p>Not that the Sweeney line of McCreary and Cline has fallen off on their scoring efforts. Balance Of Power Secret Of Springfield’s Success

<div class="byline">By JIMMY JORDAN</div><p>PITTSBURGH, Pa&mdash;</p><p>Looks like Larry Regan and his new Pittsburgh Hornets may be able to untrack themselves after clearing one last big hurdle which definitely had hampered their play in the early stage of the American Hockey League schedule.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-01394/1740417-1-eng-US/f0010-012.jpg" title="f0010-01" width="302" height="451"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Larry Regan</b></figcaption></div><p>The Hornets could just about be classified as orphans after reaching Pittsburgh for their first game of the season, October 11.</p><p>There they were, skating around a new $22,000,000 rink, before a crowd of nearly 10,000 hockey-starved fans, dropping a 2-1 decision to Buffalo.</p><p>Then they discovered the new Civic Auditorium, with his movable roof, was not &ldquo;home&rdquo; to them. They&rsquo;d have to find another place to practice.</p><p>Closest hockey rink to Pittsburgh is at Johnstown, about 75 miles Northeast. At nearby Bridgeville there&rsquo;s a postage-size piece of indoor ice which allows for a bit of muscle-stretching but no more.</p><p>Coach Regan hauled the players to Johnstown, had them skate on the Bridgeville ice&mdash;or they didn&rsquo;t practice at all. By November 17, they had played eight games in the high-domed show house. During the same period they had been allowed to practise there four times&mdash;once at 6 a.m., and another time at 7 a.m.</p><p>November 17 the Auditorium Authority, in high dudgeon because of newspaper attacks on its &ldquo;off-the-ice&rdquo; policy, finally came down to earth long enough to draw up a practice schedule suitable to Regan and his players, which will be in effect until late March.</p><p>&ldquo;Now that we can get in some practice when we need it, without making long bus trips, maybe we can start scoring some goals,&rdquo; Regan said.</p><p>Injuries had hampered the play of the Hornets even before the season opened.</p><p>Bob Bailey, veteran center, fractured a bone in his right hand in an exhibition game. Early in November he had to undergo surgery to correct an imperfection in the original setting of the injury.</p><p>Paul Jackson, a young defenseman with a lot of promise, fractured a bone in his left leg in a game with Springfield, November 1st. Bo Elik, veteran right wing, pulled a muscle and was out for three weeks. Ray Ross, another wing, missed more than two weeks of play with an ankle sprain.</p><p>Even Gerry McNamara, the goalie, missed five games when struck below the left eye with a deflected puck. The orbit was fractured.</p><p>And Gene Ubriaco, young wing, missed three games with a pulled groin muscle.</p><p>During the first six weeks of the season, the Hornets could show but three wins and one tie in 16 games.</p><p>That one deadlock, 4-4, was with the Springfield Indians, however. They dumped Rochester, 3-2, on the Americans&rsquo; ice, and their other victims were Quebec, 2-1, and Providence, 4-2, in Pittsburgh.</p><p>Both the latter victories came after the Hornets had been on the road where they had opportunities to practice. The victory over Providence came just six days after the Reds had hammered the Regan men, 8-2, in Providence.</p><p>November 15, after travelling to Johnstown twice for their only skating in five days, they dropped a 3-2 decision to Hershey, in the $22,000,000 worth of rink.</p><p>They had rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the second period. They had nothing left in the last period.</p><p>That triggered the newspaper criticism which finally brought about a definite practice schedule for the rest of the season.</p><p>Now, if the lame and the halt can get back onto their skates to take advantage of the workouts, the Hornets might get to moving in the manner Larry Regan anticipated when the season opened October 8.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Scribes Harpoons Get Hornets The Needed Ice Time

<div class="byline">By JOHN TRAVERS</div><p>HERSHEY, Pa.&mdash;</p><p>The amazing Hershey Bears simply have been unbeatable on home ice, running off eight straight victories at their lair since the 1961-62 American Hockey League season got underway in October.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-02331/1740448-1-eng-US/f0010-022.jpg" title="f0010-02" width="290" height="453"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Parker MacDonald</b></figcaption></div><p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know when it&rsquo;s going to end,&rdquo; said coach Frank Mathers, &ldquo;but as far as I&rsquo;m concerned I hope it never does.&rdquo;</p><p>Hershey has whipped every league opponent at least once on home grounds. The Bears flattened Providence twice to continue their mastery over the Rhode Island outfit. A Reds&rsquo; club has not whipped a Hershey team here since Mar. 14, 1959&mdash;the Bears running off 14 straight triumphs in the interim.</p><p>The only problem Hershey has to date is its road play. The Bears won only two of their first eight away games. Had Mathers charges played just. 500 hockey on the road, they would have been out of sight of the rest of the AHL pack. However, Hershey is keeping right on the heels of defending league and Calder Cup champion Springfield, pacesetters in the Eastern Division.</p><p>Hershey continues to jam in the crowds, drawing a whopping 46,332 fans in the first eight games at the 7,200 seat building. The top crowd was 7,311. Hershey also had two other houses of 7,210 and 7,025.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve never seen anything like it at this time of the year,&rdquo; said Mathers. &ldquo;With support like that, the guys are putting out all the way. The crowds have really picked up the fellows.</p><p>&ldquo;I think we&rsquo;ve got the material to take the league title away from Springfield this season.&rdquo; &ldquo;The club is playing sound hockey, especially at home. We&rsquo;ll get sharper as we go along. I&rsquo;m sure of it.&rdquo;</p><p>Two new faces do the Bears lineup. Rookie winger Bob Dillabough, 20, and veteran forward Parker MacDonald are now in Hershey livery.</p><p>The pair were dispatched here by the Detroit Red Wings, who summoned Marc Boileau to the Motor City on Nov. 12 The &ldquo;Flying Frenchman&rdquo; departed here as the club&rsquo;s leading scorer with seven goals and eight assists in 14 games. The 29-year-oId rookie flash, who starred for Seattle in the Western League a year ago, played every position, killed penalties and handled the point on the power play.</p><p>&ldquo;Marc did a fine job for us,&rdquo; said Mathers. &ldquo;He was a fine spot player. I&rsquo;d like to see him make the big time. He certainly deserved the chance.&rdquo;</p><p>Dillabough checked in from Sudbury and the fuzzy-cheek youngster has looked good in his early appearances in the tough AHL. He&rsquo;s an excellent skater and playmaker. He&rsquo;s been skating on a line with center Hec LaLande and winger Myron Stankiewicz.</p><p>MacDonald, a seasoned pro of both the NHL and AHL, came here from his home in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He was under suspension for failing to report to Sudbury.</p><p>And injured winger Jack McKenzie has recovered from a broken bone of his right thumb, which gives the club 12 forwards. However, Mathers will cut to 11, farming out one of the frontline crowd.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

“We Could Take It All’-Mathers

<div class="byline">By SHEL FULLERTON</div><p>CLEVELAND, O.&mdash;</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-03281/1740479-1-eng-US/f0010-032.jpg" title="f0010-03" width="292" height="430"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Les Binkley</b></figcaption></div><p>If, as it&rsquo;s said, the mark of a good hockey team is its ability to win on the road, the Cleveland Barons are going to wind up the 1961-62 season as one of the king-pins of the American Hockey League.</p><p>Coach Jackie Gordon&rsquo;s rampaging Barons are making their mark as a fine road club. In hockey, that&rsquo;s rare.</p><p>In their first 10 starts on foreign ice, they copped six victories. Two wins were chalked up on Quebec ice, one each in Pittsburgh, Rochester, Springfield and Providence. Noteworthy were the wins in Springfield and Providence, both of which displayed the bounce of the Cleveland icers, who suffered humiliating losses in their first visits to each of these cities in the first two games of the season.</p><p>The Barons were slapped with a 9-1 loss by Providence in the season&rsquo;s opener, then fell 8-2 to the defending champion Springfield Indians in the next game. The loss to Springfield was the Barons&rsquo; 17th straight setback in that city.</p><p>In the face of these two decisive defeats and considering that the Barons were something less than brilliant on the road a year ago, there was no great hope for improvement when they showed their faces in Springfield and Providence for their second appearance of the season.</p><p>The Barons won both games, skating brilliantly in the process, then slammed four second period goals in Quebec on the same trip to extend their road record to three straight.</p><p>As a result, the Cleveland icers have pushed up into serious contention for the AHL lead.</p><p>Credit for the fine showing of the Barons must be spread equally over the team&rsquo;s entire personnel.</p><p>From a miserable start, with much of the blame going to the defense and the back-checkers, goalie Les Binkley has been doing a consistently good job in the nets. The Barons&rsquo; trainer of a year ago, hero of the rags-to-riches story, has the ability if given the right protection.</p><p>Led by two cagey veterans, Aldo Guidolin and Tommy Williams, the defense shapes up as much stronger than the blue-line crew of 1960-61. Guidolin is carrying on as well as he did last season, when he was an All-Star selection, while the wiley Williams, despite his age, still is proving himself one of the smartest defensemen in the league. He makes few mistakes.</p><p>Bill Needham continues to improve steadily, while Gary Bergman has been a distinct improvement over Moe Mantha in the other regular blue-line spot. Bergman has starred on defense and, at the same time, has proved a real threat on the attack.</p><p>For the first time in several years, the Barons can ice three forward lines of almost equal fire power.</p><p>Tops to date has been the Hank Ciesla-Ed Mazur-Dick Van Impe combination, which produced 15 goals and 36 points in the Barons&rsquo; first 15 games. Close behind is the Billy Sutherland-Jim Mikol-Wayne Larkin trio, which accounted for 13 goals and 33 points over the same span of games.</p><p>The Ron Attwell-Fred Glover-John Ferguson combine produced 10 goals and 28 points, somewhat less than expected, but it is practically a certainty that this trio will step up the pace as the season progresses. Any line with Glover on it is dangerous. He and Attwell are proven sharp-shooters, while the aggressive young Ferguson is showing constant improvement as <i>a</i> running mate for the two veterans.</p><p>Of their first 15 games, the Barons played only five on home ice, where they had a 3-2 mark. The home record should improve.</p><p>All of which means that the Cleveland skaters are going to cut a swath through the AHL&mdash;if they can maintain anything approaching their fine early-season record on the road.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

I think you&rsquo;d be surprised to find that they are actually made of nylon-armour I How they came to be developed is one of the most interesting stories in modern sport.</p><p>It started several years ago, with the Montreal Canadiens. It was a fast, hard-fought game. &ldquo;Boom Boom&rdquo; Geoffrion got possession of the puck and went racing down the ice. He got a stiff body check. He fell to the ice! The crowd gasped, but 1 guess none of them realized how serious it was. His own skate had deeply cut into his leg.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0010-05171/1740517-1-eng-US/f0010-052.jpg" title="f0010-05" width="523" height="642"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>N.H.L. <div class="byline">By DON FLEMING</div><p>EDMONTON, Alta.&mdash;</p><p>Close to 9,500 fans were in the pews the night that professional hockey was ushered into San Francisco&rsquo;s vast Cow Palace.</p><p>The Edmonton Flyers rather spoiled the occasion for the first nighters by coming from behind for a 5-3 duke.</p><p>But among the sprinkling of happy smiles in the building, one belonged to Jolly Jack Adams, the Great White Father of the Detroit Red Wing organization.</p><p>&ldquo;This just helped to prove to me that good days are just around the corner for us once again in the Detroit chain,&rdquo; Adams chuckled. &ldquo;The old pendulum is coming back.&rdquo;</p><p>The Flyers shed a number of old legs when last year&rsquo;s club failed to make the Western League playoffs for the first time ever.</p><p>The face lifting opened the door for a record influx of six rookies.</p><p>&ldquo;It had to be a real challenge for Bud Poile when he started a season with six first-year players,&rdquo; Jolly Jack acknowledged. &ldquo;But here is the season well into its second month, and all six are still with the club. That&rsquo;s better than par for the course.&rdquo;</p><p>What&rsquo;s more, if any changes are in the works for the Flyers who opened up daylight on their seven other Western League rivals, it is apt to be a veteran or two leaving first. They have been carrying two more men than they can dress for any given game.</p><p>&ldquo;There are going to be several of these kids with the Wings inside of a couple of years,&rdquo; Adams maintains. &ldquo;But that&rsquo;s only part of the story. A couple of kids with the junior Gil Kings in Edmonton could be playing pro right now. And there is a real fine bunch with our junior club at Hamilton.</p><h2>Flying</h2><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-1617/1740684-1-eng-US/f0011-162.jpg" title="f0011-16" width="534" height="523"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Forbes Kennedy</b></figcaption></div><p>&ldquo;Yes sir, this means only one thing to me. We&rsquo;re going to have our turn again on top of the heap&hellip;and it&rsquo;s going to be soon.&rdquo;</p><p>Pick of the rookie crop with the Flyers would seem to be Larry Jeffrey. He looks to be sure fire major league potential.</p><p>This hard-knocking left winger fitted in right away&hellip;which evoked this comment from a veteran hockey observer: &ldquo;This kid Jeffrey is a better pro than he is a junior.&rdquo;</p><p>That&rsquo;s often the case. And Jeffrey was one rookie whom the veterans weren&rsquo;t going to push around. As Flyers worked their way around the league, Jeffrey tried each one of the opposition&rsquo;s tough guys for size. Rather than back away from any of them, he took the aggressive and didn&rsquo;t ever emerge a loser.</p><p>Of course, there will be a few of his opponents aiming to teach him the facts of life, but Jeffrey already has commanded their respect.</p><p>Two Oil King grads, Tom Burgess and Don Chiz, are also performing yeoman service on the forward lines, and back on the blue line, Flyers have three rooks&hellip;Knobby Walsh, John Miszuk and Doug Messier.</p><p>Of course, it isn&rsquo;t only the freshmen that Adams is considering as imminent Red Wings. Len Lunde has taken dead aim on Lou Jankowski&rsquo;s scoring record, and is determined to win his way back to the majors, as is Forbes Kennedy, likewise a centreman who has been playing the best hockey of his life.</p><p><b>ICE CHIPS</b>&mdash;Bob Solinger scored three goals in the San Francisco Seals&rsquo; first two home games, and already is the public choice&hellip;The Art Edwards and Art Chapman combo is a cinch to bid for a Western League franchise for Long Beach, Calif., for next season&hellip;Knobby Dorohoy bowed in big with the Los Angeles Blades, scoring the winner and setting up the equalizer in his debut against Edmonton in the California city&hellip;To swing the deal, the Blades let Vancouver Canucks have defenceman Les Hunt, a Ranger chattel, for the balance of the season. Los Angeles has an option on Dorohoy until June 1&hellip;True to pre-season warnings, Roy McBride and Colin Kilburn have a winning club in those Spokane Comets. It looks like a ding-dong battle between Portland and the Comets for the southern division title.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Adams Raves At Sweet Smell Of Flyers’ Success

Y.&mdash;</p><p>Call the Rochester Americans stingy or miserly, they don&rsquo;t give a hoot.</p><p>The Silky Sullivans of the American Hockey League just hope they can continue their sensational finishes, but would like to improve on their poor get-aways.</p><p>Silky Sullivan, you will remember, was the famed slow-starting, fast-finishing race horse of a few years ago.</p><p>The Amerks are quite satisfied with their finishing kick. Statistics tabulated for the first eight Rochester home games this season show the locals scored nine goals in the final period while holding the opposition to a grand total of one! Cleveland, on Oct. 22, was the only team to beat goalie Don Simmons in the third period of a game here.</p><p>But this strictly isn&rsquo;t a home ice affair. The Americans outscored their opponents 10 to 5 in the final periods of the first eight road outings. That&rsquo;s a total of 19 goals for and only 6 against for the last 20 minutes of regular action in 16 games. Three of the six goals by the opposition were made by Buffalo on Nov. 4.</p><p>The first period&mdash;well, that&rsquo;s another story, unfortunately.</p><p>At the War Memorial here the Americans netted eight goals to 11 for the invaders, while the away figures were seven for the Amerks and 11 against.</p><p>The second period stood at five for and five against at home and eight for and 16 against away.</p><p>Overtimes were one for and two against&mdash;all on foreign rinks.</p><p>While in the statistical department, the Arnerks averaged close to 35 shots on goal for their first eight home starts. They made good on 22 of 277 shots, while the opposition scored on 17 of 185 tries.</p><p>On the road, Rochester netted 25 goals on 205 shots on goal for seven games (no figures were available for saves on one game from Quebec). The opponents were successful on 34 of 227 efforts.</p><p>Thus, while the Americans pumped many more shots at opposing goalies here, their average of success was much better on the road.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Americans’ Final Period Kick Overshadows Their Poor Starts

<div class="byline">By JACK COOK</div><p>SASKATOON, Sask.&mdash;</p><p>The lowly Prince Albert Mintos and Weyburn Red Wings have made their moves towards vacating the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League low spots. In both instances, the longtime doormats have been doing their improving the hard way.</p><p>Mintos, bolstered by late cuts from other clubs and a three-for-one deal with Regina Pats, turned on two earlier tormentors&mdash;Melville Millionaires and Estevan Bruins&mdash;for surprise victories on home ice.</p><p>Humiliated at one time 11-0 by Melville, the Mintos bounced back for a 6-5 decision. And when the league-leading Bruins paid a northern visit, Mintos took some of the sting out of an earlier 16-0 lacing with a 3-2 victory.</p><p>Not to be outdone by their nearest rivals, Bud MacPherson&rsquo;s fledgling Red Wings walked into Regina and slapped the always-tough Pats with a 3-1 defeat on home ice. In addition Weyburn provided brilliant young goaltender Joe Daley with his first shutout of the season, a 4-0 whitewash job of Moose Jaw.</p><p>Daley, purchased from the Manitoba Junior League and a young 16 year&rsquo;s of age, ranks second only to Estevan&rsquo;s combination of Jim Letcher and Jack Norris in the goaltending department. Despite the fact his club has either been in or near last place for the entire season, Daley holds a creditable 2.78 goals-against average in 14 games. Letcher is best at 1.87, followed closely by Norris, who has a 1.90 mark.</p><p>Weyburn joined in the trading business, swapping 18-year-old Penticton, B.C., native, Harvey Wish, for three Estevan Bruins. Moving to Red Wings immediately were Tony Bukovich of Houghton, Mich., and Mike Dimich, both in their last season. A juvenile will be named later to complete the deal.</p><p>Unparalleld success on home ice has kept Saskatoon&rsquo;s surprising Quakers up with the leaders. At the time of this writing Quakers had won nine of 10 home starts and were in second position, three points back of Estevan.</p><p>While Quakers have thrived at home, they have been one of the poorest road clubs, managing only two wins and a pair of ties in 10 tries.</p><p>Jim Kozie, third-year centre with Estevan continues to set the individual scoring pace with 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points. Migay who has been out of hockey for over a year still rates as a valuable property with some of the pro clubs and they are reluctant to give him his amateur status, one club in particular has offered him more money than a lot of the players in the National League are making at the present time&hellip;Kenora Thistle star Stubby Dubchuk has joined the Bearcats in training camp. Dubchuk scored over forty goals with the Thistles last year, and had a couple of pro clubs after him after last season&hellip;One of the brightest pro prospects the Lakehead has seen in many a moon is developing in the camp of the Fort William Canadians, young Gary Veneruzzo the captain of the club has got everything that is required to be a great pro, and he is currently tied for the scoring lead in Lakehead junior league with team mate Ken Campbell, both have nineteen points. <p>TORONTO, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>The Robin Hood Oats Trophy Programme is now entering its fourth successful season of awarding Canadian youths for their outstanding athletic and scholastic abilities.</p><p>In 1958, when Robin Hood decided to donate &ldquo;Most Valuable Player&rdquo; trophies to outstanding young hockey players, the company estimated that no more than 500 leagues would accept their offer of trophy donations. The trophy was, of course, to be awarded to the outstanding player in each league on the basis of a creed which was drawn up to accent the all-around abilities of young Canadian hockey players.</p><p>An announcement, outlining the philosophy of the trophy programme and how it was being operated, was issued. The resulting publicity took the programme into high gear. The number of enquiries reached such proportions that 1,000 trophies, rather than the 500 originally estimated were required.</p><p>During the 1959-60 season, league acceptance of the trophy plan increased and a further increase took place during the 1960-1961 season.</p><p>During the last hockey season, well over 1,600 trophies were distributed and the number of boys involved in the leagues registered for the programme totalled over 128,000.</p><p>Upon contacting the millers of Robin Hood Oats, sponsors of the trophy programme, Hockey News was advised that any young Canadian hockey player, 9 to 13 years of age, is eligible for the trophy. Robin Hood Starts Fourth Year Promoting MVP Awards To Kids

MARIE, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>When you&rsquo;re at the bottom of the league, the only place you can go is up, and I thought I&rsquo;d ask the fledgling coach of the Sault Thunderbirds&mdash;cellar-dwellers in the Eastern Professional Hockey League&mdash;just how the teams ahead of him in the standings would finish when the final league game is played in late March. I came to one conslusion&hellip;Black Jack Stewart, although in the league basement, is quite an observer of hockey talent in the EPHL. I asked Jack which teams would wind up in the playoffs, and which positions they would attain in the final standings. Jack, in a rather long drawl, which seems to be, the mark of a qualified coach, stated &ldquo;Kitchener-first, Sudbury-second, Kingston-third&hellip;Fourth place will be up for grabs.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;Jack,&rdquo; I said, &ldquo;why do you pick Kitchener first?&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;Well, Harry, it&rsquo;s quite obvious that Kitchener has a healthy jump in the standings right now, leading the closest club by five full games, and even if they did go into any sort of slump, they still have enough of a cushion to maintain their first place position all season long. Furthermore, with great competitors like Red Sullivan as playing-coach, who in turn has a good skating team, is enough of an indicator to me. You know, Red has possibly two of the best leaders that any hockey club could want in big Jack Bownass on defence (Boy, he&rsquo;s a really solid guy!), and Brian Hextall, the brilliant rookie, playing his first year as professional (a surefire National Hockey Leaguerland Eddie Hoekstra, one of the best playmakers in professional hockey. That&rsquo;s a real backbone for a professional hockey club! The only weakness, if there is any, (and you can&rsquo;t prove it this early in the season), would be their goal-keeper, Jack McCarten, who seems to be a hot-and-cold type.&rdquo;</p><p>Sudbury possibly have the best balanced club in the Eastern Professional Hockey League, and, more so than any other team, when playing as a complete unit. One aspect that will make them tough as the season progresses is the ruggedness of their forward lines, guys like Burton, Diachuk, Stankiewicz and Morton, real tough hockey players. Something that always makes a team impressive is when the veterans of the club and the rookies work in well together, and Chirp Brenchley has the ideal blending. The Wolves thus far haven&rsquo;t shown a real leader on the club: the guy that&rsquo;s going to jump over the boards and score that big goal nor kill off a penalty at the crucial time of the game, but when they win it&rsquo;s always a team effort, and that&rsquo;s Jack&rsquo;s reason for picking them to finish second.</p><p>Black Jack, in his slow mannerism, moved the Frontenacs up one in the standings from last year by saying, &ldquo;Wren&rsquo;s got a lot of seasoned pro&rsquo;s who have played together for a number of years and I guess the safest winning combination in any sports is the really experienced professional&mdash;and Kingston&rsquo;s strength would have to lie with their seasoned veterans. They&rsquo;ve got three guys who can fill the nets to hurt you, at any time, Orval Tessier, a 59-goal man a couple of years ago, Tom McCarthy, with 46 goals a couple of years ago, and Bob Attersley, who&rsquo;s played with Wren since his amateur successes with Whit by, and I also understand that their net-minding duties seem to have been solved. The last couple of years they never had the big save when they needed it, this year Kingston have improved considerably between the pipes, with a seasoned net-minder of AHL and NHL play, Eddie Chadwick.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;How about the Thunderbirds getting into the play-offs?&rdquo;</p><p>After a lengthy pause, Jack said, &ldquo;Let&rsquo;s put it this way, the last play-off spot will be up for grabs between Hull - Ottawa, North Bay and my club. The team that gets hot and can put together a streak of five or six wins, and win their share of home games, is the team that will catch the last play-off spot. Stewart Concedes Beavers 1st, Wolves 2nd, Fronts 3rd; Rest Up For Grabs

<div class="byline">By BOB GIORDANO</div><p>KELOWNA, B.C.&mdash;</p><p>The Trail Smoke Eaters 1961 World Amateur Hockey Champions have taken over from where they left off last season&mdash;as giants of senior hockey in British Columbia.</p><p>Crushing all opposition at will, the Smokies have yet to taste defeat after chalking up nine straight victories.</p><p>The only remaining senior &lsquo;A&rsquo; hockey league in the province today, the four team Western International League from the Kooteny Valley is comprised of Trail Smoke Eaters: Rossland Warriors: Nelson Maple Leafs, and Kimberley Dynamiters.</p><p>Nothing breeds success like success, and that&rsquo;s been the story with the Trail Smoke Eaters since 1958 the year a fellow named Boby Kromm took over the reins of the Trail Smoke Eaters.</p><p>A slight 155 pounder, Kromm has played on the Smoke Eaters lineup for a number of years. The 32-year-old veteran winger is noted for his drive and determination, and believes in getting nothing but the best from his players.</p><p>The Kromm Formula soon brushed off onto his players, and his beloved Smokies vaulted to the National Finals in 1960, and this was followed by a World Hockey Title in 1961.</p><p>In a telephone interview with this reporter from his home in Trail, Kromm was eager to let off some steam. &ldquo;My Smokies are too strong for this league, and I say it in all sincerity&rdquo;, the Trail coach continued. &ldquo;We need some stronger opposition real bad, and even clubs who now and then knock us off&rdquo;.</p><p>&ldquo;Here&rsquo;s the way I see it now,&rdquo; said the volcanic leader. &ldquo;We have a lot of strength: depth and a whole lot of hockey ability on this club, the opposition just don&rsquo;t give us a good game.&rdquo;</p><p>The Smokies are much the same club that last season brought Trail World Honors, with the exception of high scoring winger Jackie McLeod, and Daryl Sly, a slick defenseman.</p><p>As replacements, Kromm has added two defensemen in Ed Pellosel, last season with Minne. apolis, and Larry MacLearn, a Kooteny boy who played with Philadelphia.</p><p>The acquisition of Burley Russ Kowalchuk on the forward lines will add strength and scoring ability for the Smokies. Kowalchuk has been in action with the Allan Cup Champion &lsquo;Belleville McFarlands, and last season with the Kelwona Packers.</p><p>Kromm, who has been doing most of his coaching from the bench this season, also spoke of the three other clubs. The Kimberley Dynamiters, who entered the league this season, after a lengthy absence apparently under estimated the calibre of play in the W.I.H.L. Kromm said the Dynaminters brought too many &lsquo;young kids&rsquo; and forgot about seasoned senior players. The Kimberley crew presently in the basement, are coached by former W. I. H. L. defense star Red Sutherland.</p><p>Speaking of Nelson and Rossland, the Trail pilot voiced the opinion they lacked some key senior personnel, but felt they had come a long way with the material available. The Trail coach&rsquo;s tongue hit a high note when he spoke of rough tough Ted Lebodia of the Nelson Maple Leafs. Lebodia a well built defenseman has sat out on numerous suspensions over the past few seasons. &ldquo;This guy is a menace to our league, he is an absolute mad man, and their is no place for him in this league, he should be barred from hockey, for the good of hockey,&rdquo; shouted Kromm.</p><p>The Smokies seeking stronger opposition are presently negotiating with teams from the Western Hockey League for a series of exhibition games throughout the season. Portland Buckarooos, Seattle Totems, and Spokane Comets are a few who will make their appearance on Trail ice.</p><p>Attendance at Smoke Eaters home games have averaged 1,100 per game. But Kromm warns that unless the opposition comes up with a better brand of hockey, he hates to think of the drastic decline in fan support that may result.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Trail Smokies Outdistancing All WIL Foes

CATHARINES, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>Hamilton Red Wings&rsquo; march to what could be their first Ontario Hockey Association junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; pennant was slowed down slightly but by no means halted last week.</p><p>After winning 10 consecutive games, the Wings had to settle for a 3-3 draw with Guelph Royals in Guelph but still hold a commanding 11-point margin over their nearest rivals, the rapidly-rising Montreal Canadiens.</p><p>The Wings&rsquo; feat of opening the season with 10 consecutive victories approached but did not match the best record of this type on the books of the OHA junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; group.</p><p>In the 1944-45 season Toronto St. Michael&rsquo;s Majors, with future National Hockey League players such as Gus Mortson, Jim Thomson, Goose McCormack and Les Costello in their lineup, won their first 12 games of the 20-game schedule before losing an 8-6 decision in Maple Leaf Gardens to the St. Catharines entry known as the Falcons at that time.</p><p>The Majors then won their next six games to end the season with 18 wins in 19 starts. (Their final game against another Toronto team, the Young Rangers, was hot played as it did not affect the final standing.)</p><p>St. Mike&rsquo;s, to the surprise of no one, breezed all the way to the Memorial Cup that year.</p><p>Incidentally coaching the St. Catharines team which was the only club to defeat St. Mike&rsquo;s that year was the present coach of the Chicago Black Hawks, Rudy Pilous.</p><p>In the first exhibition clash of the year between St. Michael&rsquo;s, the leaders of the new Metro League, and Hamilton, the Red Wings scored a 4-2 decision.</p><p>Neither St. Mike&rsquo;s nor Hamilton are defeated in their own league.</p><p>The big man, although small in stature, with the Red Wings is their brilliant center Hubert (Pit) Martin.</p><p>Last year Martin scored 20 goals in 48 games.</p><p>This year in his team&rsquo;s first 11 starts he has 14 goals and 10 assists, just one point back of his teammate Lowel MacDonald who has 11 goals and 14 assists.</p><p>Borden Smith of Guelph Royals is still in third place with 16 points but has to share that position with Andre Boudrias of Montreal who picked up a goal and three assists in his club&rsquo;s last two games.</p><p>Phil Espositor of St. Catharines and Ron Schock of Niagara Falls Flyers are tied in fifth place with 15 points.</p><p>Tops in the netminding division is Buddy Blom, the blond Hamilton guardian who lowered his goals against average to 2:09.</p><p>With the exception of the league-leading Hamilton club, the league is still tighter than the band on Jack Benny&rsquo;s bankroll.</p><p>Hamilton has 21 points, followed by Montreal with 10, Peterborough eight, Niagara Falls seven and St. Catharines and Guelph six apiece.</p><p>It will be noted that there is a spread of only four points between second and sixth spots.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Hamilton’s Win Streak Nipped At 11 By Guelph

N.Y.&mdash;</p><p>Wally Kullman is no magician by trade, but it&rsquo;s difficult not to suspect the fiery New Haven playing-coach as a wizard of some sort for the Blades still rank among the top echelon of the Eastern Hockey League.</p><p>When the Blades opened their training camp, Kullman figured he may have his work cut out for him because of the loss of three key operatives who were instrumental in guiding New Haven to the Northern Division title and to the finals of the playoffs last season.</p><p>With Gordie Stratton making it to the Western League, Don Davidson playing in Europe and backliner Ray Crew undergoing surgery that was to sideline him indefinitely, the future indeed appeared bleak for Kullman.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve lost two forwards who scored 85 goals between them last season and one of my best defenseman,&rdquo; lamented Kullman before the campaign opened. &ldquo;Where do I go from here?&rdquo; he asked as if not really expecting an answer.</p><p>But Wally can still pull victories out of his hat, sleeve, or what have you as proven by the Blades&rsquo; nine won, six lost record after their first 15 games.</p><p>What has made the Blades&rsquo; start all the more amazing is the fact that no New Haven player is listed among the league&rsquo;s top 10 scorers whereas both Stratton and Davidson were members of the select company from the very beginning of last season.</p><p>&ldquo;I may have lost scoring punch, but the desire is still there on the club,&rdquo; said Kullman recently. &ldquo;The boys are hustling and it&rsquo;s been paying off.&rdquo;</p><h2>Speedy Blade</h2><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0014-02301/1741036-1-eng-US/f0014-022.jpg" title="f0014-02" width="570" height="585"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Yvan Chaste</b></figcaption></div><p>Kullman has been getting a lot of extra mileage out of forward Yvan Chasle, whose 73 points last season took third money behind Stratton&rsquo;s 112 and Davidson&rsquo;s 90.</p><p>Along with Chasle, Kullman has been getting good hockey out of Gil Moffatt, who was acquired from Long Island for John Brophy during the off-season.</p><p>Kullman converted Moffatt from a defenseman into a right winger and the move enabled Moffatt to score six goals in his team&rsquo;s first 12 games.</p><p>Also, backliner Floyd Hinchberger and forward Wimpy Jones, who was obtained on waivers from Charlotte, have come through for Kullman, who, by the way, managed a faint smile when someone asked him the other day: &ldquo;Now where would New Haven be without all-star goalie Gaeten Desserault?&rdquo;</p><p>Around the League: Clinton and Johnston still setting a torrid pace in Northern Division&hellip;Jets&rsquo; John Lumley leading the league in goals with 20&hellip;Ken Coombes, who played six seasons for Johnstown, was traded to Knoxville for Don Curry&hellip;Long Island Ducks have dropped seven straight games and nine out of their last 10&hellip;Clinton went through another unbeaten week, winning all three games&hellip;Greensboro also bagged three victories, including their third overtime success of the season&hellip;Generals have moved into a four-point lead over Charlotte in their battle for the Southern Division lead&hellip;Philadelphia won its first game on home ice this season when it defeated Long Island, 4-1. <div class="byline">By PETER WARREN</div><p>SAINT JOHN, N.B.&mdash;</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-02320/1741129-1-eng-US/f0015-022.jpg" title="f0015-02" width="274" height="416"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Gus Kyle</b></figcaption></div><p>New Brunswick hockey has hit the low spots again.</p><p>Moncton Beavers&rsquo; entry into the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League left central N.B. without a major circuit.</p><p>Saint John Irving Oilers&mdash;the power-packed unit of 1960&mdash;lost Claude McKinnon, Frank Sheppard, Doug MacPhee and Bob Bowness and then dropped two hefty decisions to Moncton in preseason exhibition battles. The Oilers fell to 6-1 and 11-1 to the high-stepping Beavers.</p><p>What difference the presence of former National Leaguer and exCalgary coach Gus Kyle made in the Saint John camp was not noticeable on the ice.</p><p>The Oilers had been put through stiff workouts by the determined Kyle and hit the ice a more physically-fit outfit than in previous years. But they were skated into the ground by the youthful, flashy Beavers.</p><p>The Port City entry played the opening two games with Bowness and MacPhee in the lineups. Sheppard, a strong defenceman and McKinnon had departed for other centres.</p><p>But MacPhee turned up with Moncton in the Beavers clash with Amherst in the N.S. League and Bowness, who came from Windsor Maple Leafs to Saint John last year, appeared on the Leaf lineup against Halifax.</p><p>Elsewhere in the province the Miramichi League&mdash;probably to be known as the North Shore League&mdash;is ready to roll with Shippegan, Chatham, Chatham RCAF, Newcastle, Douglastown and possibly Bathurst all entered.</p><p>The Saint John Suburban League is rolling along with Lorneville, Grand Bay, Brown&rsquo;s Flat, Martinon, Ketepec and Welsford all playing regular Sunday league games at Lord Beaverbrook Rink in the Port City.</p><p>Ralph Miles has had Fredericton Caps on the ice in the early hours of the morning and Campbellton and Dalhousie have both had workouts.</p><p>Trouble is that the standard of hockey and the attendances at different rinks varies so much that everyone is at a loss as far as arranging a league with the remaining teams.</p><p>Saint John is almost certain to go senior when the Maritimes hit the playoff trail, but until then we&rsquo;ll probably be submitted to humbling defeats by Moncton Beavers and possibly a few exhibition tilts with Fredericton Caps.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

New Brunswick Senior League Hits Low Spot

Young aspirants to the NHL will learn the basic skills they will need and tips on how to develop them as Frank has done himself and as he has learned them from the other NHL greats.</b></p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0015-03289/1741160-1-eng-US/f0015-032.jpg" title="f0015-03" width="998" height="934"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>BOBBY PULFORD KEEPS IN SHAPE CONDITIONING</b></figcaption></div><p>Conditioning should be no problem for a youngster learning to skate and play hockey. He can go from dawn &lsquo;til dusk on a crisp Saturday and tumble into bed completely tired. By Sunday morning, he is ready for church and more hockey until he&rsquo;s called in for the late meal.</p><p>But for the boy who is seriously looking forward to a professional hockey career, conditioning begins to be a problem from the juvenile stage and on.</p><p>It&rsquo;s not much, but it&rsquo;s there, especially for the boy who tends to be naturally overweight.</p><p>Every boy going into his mid and late teens should be condition conscious: get lots of sleep, eat well and regularly, do a few simple exercises such as push-ups to keep trim.</p><p>I&rsquo;ve met 19-year-olds who were flabbergasted to think they could be out of condition&mdash;BUT THEY WERE. Late nights, not enough exercise (often because they won&rsquo;t exert themselves in practice) and irregular sleeping hours, all of these habits will leave even a so-called youth out of condition.</p><p>And out of condition could be out of work in pro hockey.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<p class="dropcap"><span>S</span>T. PAUL, Minn.&mdash;Three players from the Muskegon Zephers of the International Hockey League were charged with assault in court here, following a stick swinging battle with a policeman on duty. The three players pleaded not guilty to the charge.</p><p>After considerable debate, attorney Joseph J. Dudley asked for a jury trial. A date will be set Dec. 28.</p><p>The row broke out Wednesday night, November 15th, when Bryan McLay was sent to the penalty box during the game with St. Paul. An altercation developed between McLay and St. Paul policeman James Mahoney.</p><p>Mahoney suffered a gashed head, requiring seven stitches, and detective Joseph Sherin suffered a skate bruise on the leg.</p><p>Charged were McLay, Ron Stephenson, 22. and Lawrence Lund, 21. They posted $100 bail. Half a dozen uniformed officers and several plainclothesmen took part before the brawl was quieted.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Muskegon Players Charged With Assault

N.S.&mdash;</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/c4-01104/1741277-1-eng-US/c4-012.jpg" title="C4-01" width="279" height="420"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Leo Amadio</b></figcaption></div><p>Looking to the example being set by Doug Harvey with the New York Rangers, followers of the New Glasgow Rangers of the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League have hopes that newly appointed playing coach Leo Amadio will lift the club into a contending position.</p><p>After missing the playoffs three consecutive years, New York obtained Harvey as playing coach and after 18 games the club was only a single point shy of the top spot in the N.H.L. standings.</p><p>Another Ranger team&mdash;New Glasgow&mdash;after years of glory in Nova Scotia hockey circles; suddenly became at NSSHL doormat in the 1959-60 season and repeated the unwanted role last year.</p><p>Just like New York, the local Rangers have signed a rugged and highly regarded rearguard in Amadio. a seven year professional performer. Amadio hardly had his bags unpacked when he began receiving praise for his coaching ability.</p><p>Rangers, who lost their first five games by lopsided scores last winter and never recovered, started the present campaign in much improved fashion. In the loop opener Nov. 18 Rangers battled a hardfighting Halifax Wolverines team to a 5-5 draw, and then defeated Windsor Maple Leafs 4-2 two days later. The three points gave New Glasgow an early hold on first place in the five-team circuit.</p><p>Just as N.H.L. critics are shouting: &ldquo;Can Harvey keep the Rangers up there?&rdquo; Nova Scotia hockey followers are yelling: &ldquo;Can Amadio keep the Rangers up there?&rdquo;</p><p>Only time will tell as the two far-distant clubs, both with the Ranger label on their uniforms, battle to regain lost glory of recent years.</p><p><b>ATLANTIC BREEZES&hellip;</b> Defending champion Amherst Ramblers. without goalie Jacques Monette as the season opened, signed 21-year-old Ivan Plourde to the netminding chores&hellip;Plourde tended the twines for Quebec Citadels a year ago&hellip;Ramblers also signed another former Quebec Citadel, defenceman Laurie Fridette. New Glasgow Fans Putting Chips On Coach Amadio

Que.&mdash;</p><p>What makes a hockey club lose three straight games, one to each of the other clubs in the league, after winning it&rsquo;s first five games of the schedule? Usually injuries play a major part in such a downfall. But in this case, injuries didn&rsquo;t enter into the picture.</p><p>Coach Wilf Cude, the former National Hockey League netminder with the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Black Hawks wishes he knew the answer. There just doesn&rsquo;t seem to be one for him, as his Rouyn-Noranda Alouettes romped to five one-sided victories in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association Senior A race and then collapsed in the next three games.</p><p>The downfall saw the Als tumble out of first place, being overtaken by the Kapuskasing GM&rsquo;s. The Quebecers lost three games within a space of six days, but have since regained their winning ways and moved back into first place with the GM&rsquo;s as both clubs have now won six games and dropped three.</p><p>Elsewhere in the NOHA, there are fears that the Abitibi Eskimos will be forced to drop out of the four-team circuit. Owner-manager Jim Munsie hasn&rsquo;t yet made a positive announcement, but he&rsquo;s having financial troubles.</p><p>In this league, 900 home fans a game are needed to pay the freight, but the team must also get support from a strong booster organization. The Eskies have been averaging about 800. but are receiving little or no aid from the booster club. Unless money comes forth shortly, it looks as though abandon operations.</p><p><b>HERE AND THERE:</b> The Porcupine Flyers have an Indian boy playing with them this year, although he hasn&rsquo;t seen too much action. He&rsquo;s Gene Francis, a native of Manitoulin Island. Francis is a real digger but has a number of rough edges that have to be smoothed out&hellip;Still with the Flyers, are a couple of veteran pros, Bep Guidolin and Johnny McLellan. The two are on the same line and going well&hellip;</p><p>Chances seem good that Cliff Connelly will be back with the Alouettes before too long.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Cude’s Als Flop After Setting A Swift Early Pace

<div class="byline">By HOWIE NEWSTATE</div><p>INDIANAPOLIS, Ind&mdash;</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/c4-0399/1741332-1-eng-US/c4-032.jpg" title="C4-03" width="285" height="445"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Lloyd Maxfield</b></figcaption></div><p>If there are any high scoring hockey players available, that can put the puck past International Hockey League goaltenders without too much trouble, Alex Shibicky, Indianapolis Chiefs coach, can put them to good use.</p><p>Shibicky&rsquo;s Chiefs, winners of three out of twelve games, have scored but 26 goals in that time. It&rsquo;s not enough to win hockey games&mdash;averaging a little better than two per game.</p><p>Bobby Rivard, a center and winger-defenseman Jean Therrien lead the club in scoring with 10 points. Rivard has seven goals and Therrien six.</p><p>Sid Garant, recently purchased from Ft. Wayne, should remedy the draught somewhat. In the five games Garant has played for the Chiefs, he has countered with a pair of goals and assists.</p><p>St. Paul sent forward Jerry Kruk to the Hoosier &ldquo;Wigwam&rdquo;, when John Bailey recovered from an injury. Kruk, a native of Winnipeg, is expected to join Indianapolis shortly.</p><p>Lloyd Maxfield, another Ft. Wayne castoff, has added three tallies and Hank Therrien, four goals.</p><p>Other than Rivard, Therriens (Jean and Hank), Maxfield and Garant, all the other Chief forwards have scored only one goal in the twelve games.</p><p>&ldquo;Our defense has been adequate,&rdquo; exclaimed Shibicky. &ldquo;Grant Morton and Marcel Goyette, along with goalie Chuck Adamson have played well. As soon as rookie Bernie Gould gets some confidence in himself, he should shape up to be a good one.&rdquo;</p><p>In the summer inter-league draft, Indianapolis plucked Al LeBlanc, Danny Summers and Lloyd Maxfield. Maxfield was the only one to report. To add &ldquo;salt to the wounds,&rdquo; Ronnie Brain, a center told General Manager Mel Ross that he wanted to play with Galt (for the World Hockey Championship.)</p><p>&ldquo;Summers could have been the key to our club,&rdquo; indicated Ross. &lsquo;&lsquo;With his great knowledge of the game and one of the best defensemen in our league, Danny possibly could have made a winner out of us.&rdquo;</p><p>&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know what happened to LeBlanc. I suppose he&rsquo;s up in Canada somewhere. At any rate, he could have helped us a lot.&rdquo;</p><p>Ross said that Summers, LeBlanc and Brain are under suspension for not reporting. &ldquo;Ether they are going to play in Indianapolis, or not play at all.&rdquo;</p><p>IHL NOTES&hellip;Ft. Wayne Komet rookie Barry Jakeman and veteran Johnny Goodwin, are shelved with injuries&hellip;Jakeman a twisted knee, and Goodwin, broken, ribs&hellip;</p><p>St. Paul&rsquo;s John Bailey returned to the Saints lineup, after being out with a broken hand, suffered in a battle on the ice&hellip;Saints released Jerry Kruk to Indianapolis.</p><p>Toledo has asked waivers on Grant Munro, and replaced him with Brian Graver, from EPHL&rsquo;s Sudbury Wolves&hellip;Mercs have had a lot of tough luck&hellip;losing quite a bit of one goal games.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>
