Wharram Man In A Mask For Two Straight Seasons

CHICAGO, III.— For the past two seasons Ken Wharram has been the “man in the mask” for the Chicago Black Hawks—both times with a broken jaw. The first time Ken was checked into the boards by Toronto defenseman Jerry James and his jaw was broken on both sides. He missed 11 games and was wired for six weeks. The Black Hawks made a mask of an old helmet and a plastic shield so Ken could play. That was near the end of the 1959-60 season. Then last year Wharram was checked by Detroit’s rookie defenseman Howie Young and the jaw was broken in the same place on only the right side. “The check wasn’t actually hard enough to break the jaw again except that it hadn’t healed properly,” says Wharram. Zeidel’s Penalties Only once in his professional career has defenseman Larry Zeidel of the Hershey Bears been penalized for less than 100 minutes in a season. In 1951-52 at Indianapolis of the AHL he picked up 99 minutes. In the remainder of his pro seasons he has picked up more than 100 minutes a year. Red’s Record Red Sullivan now coaching the Kitchener Beavers of the Eastern Pro League holds the American League record for the most assists in a season. in 1953-54 Sullivan picked up a total of 89 assists while playing for the Hershey Bears.
