Burton Dons Goaler Pads When Wetzel Is Banished From Game
SUDBURY, Ont.—Goaler Don Head of the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League has yet to equal the show that Goaler Carl Wetzel of the Sudbury Wolves of the Eastern Professional Hockey League put on here last week. Head is noted as the goaler who will fight one and all at any time. He spent 101 minutes in the penalty box while playing with the Portland Buckaroos of the WHL last season. Wetzel charged out after Referee Bruce Simms following a goal by the Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds. He was given a game misconduct when he slapped Simms with his stick and then threw the puck. Cummy Burton, former member of the Detroit Red Wings and versatile Sudbury right winger, left his forward position and donned Wetzel’s pads. Burton had scored two…

KELOWNA, B. C.— Outstanding hockey personal ities played a leading roll to help usher in the newly formed Okanagan Junior ‘A’ hockey league, which saw four games played during the past week. Junior ‘A’ hockey, new to the Okanagan Valley appears tc have met good response from the paying customer from all reports. The first league game took place at Vernon, where the illustrious Walter (Babe) Pratt addressed the crowd, and faced off the puck prior to the opening whistle. Brian Roche’s Kelowna Buckaroos gave nothing away to help Vernon celebrate their opener, as they eked out a thrilling 5-4 overtime win. In the Buckaroos home opener, which offered a little bit of everything, namely a pre-game banquet, an enthusiastic crowd turned out to hear the Rev. Father David Bauer as guest speaker. The well known…

Al Just One More Case Of Punch Being Right
TORONTO, Ont.— Master trader Punch Imlach seems to have done it again. Critics snickered when the Maple Leaf manager-coach claimed defenceman Al Arbour in the National Hockey League player draft last summer. Twenty thousand dollars down the drain, they said, to help Rochester or Pittsburgh in the American League. Now the knockers are congratulating Imlach for a shrewd move. Injuries created an opening for Arbour in the Leaf defensive lineup last month and he’s done so well that absentees AI Stanley and Larry Hillman are bound to have trouble squeezing back onto theactive roster. As a matter of fact, there’s a surplus that may lead to a trade or sale. When Stanley and Hillman recover from their infirmities, Leafs will own six NHL rearguards. Boston Bruins may be the beneficiaries. Arbour marked his arrival in Toronto,…
