Amerks Almost Lost Faulkner To NHL Leafs

PETERBOROUGH, Ont.— Center, expected to be the weak spot when the Rochester American opened training here Sept. 10, could prove to be one of the Amerks’ long suits for the 1961-62 Amer-League season. What has caused this change in; thinking? Wally Boyer, Alex Faulkner and rookie Bruce Draper still are the three skaters scheduled to hold down the center positions—just as they were before training camp started. The change has been caused by Faulkner. Alex was lured out of amateur hockey in Newfoundland last season. He was in uniform for 41 Rochester games, but actually played a regular shift in about a dozen. His record was none too impressive—41 games, 5 goals, 13 assists. Aces Like Big Kings On Paper, But Curry Will Wait And See

QUEBEC CITY. Que.— After one full week of training and one inter-squad game, coach Floyd Curry was cautious about predicting big things or otherwise about the 196162 edition of Quebec Aces of the American Hockey League. “It’s too early to discuss at this stage. On paper, and I stress on paper, we have a helluva club but I want players who really want to play. Last year our Montreal Royals beat Cleveland Barons in a pre-season exhibition game and I thought we were pretty good. We didn’t win many others after that and we ended last in the Eastern Pro League. Frankly I’ll not be in a position to judge our team until after we’ve completed our nine exhibition games,” commented Aces coach. But Aces do look pretty good. They have 12 holdovers…

Port Arthur Applies To CAHA For Overseas Trip

PORT ARTHUR. Ont.— The Port Arthur Bearcats, Thunder Bay Senior Champions have applied to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association for a trip overseas this year. The Club made their application at the Annual Meeting of the Association held in Port Arthur in May. They were assured at that time, that they would be given first consideration if any tours were arranged, as yet they have heard nothing from the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. The team has been working all summer to line up players for this season, and coach Lee Fogolin, the ex National Leaguer is quoted as saying this will be Port Arthur’s year…Mickey Hennessey, signed his tenth contract to coach the Fort William Canadien juniors. Manitoba Juniors Open October 8th

WINNIPEG, Man.— The Manitoba Junior Hockey League opens its season, Oct 8, the earliest date in the group’s history with a flock of new faces and one new coach. The new mentor is Gordon Simpson who led Maroons to the Allan cup final with Galt last season. Gord is back with Monarchs, who are under new owners since Pat Lyon died last spring and his widow, Mrs. Myrtle Lyon sold out to a syndicate, led by Reg Corbiel, well-known local concession operator. Gord coached Monarchs two seasons ago before moving into senior company. The defending champion Rangers are in the throes of rebuilding and coach Gord Pennell has around 40 kids in camp. His new assistant is Roy McMeekin, who has kept goal in a variety of pro senior circuits across the country.…
