Blake Was Confident Of Playoff Victory Until Final Whistle
MONTREAL, Que — Toe Blake believed Canadiens would win their series with the Black Hawks, almost till the very moment the final buzzer sounded their death knell in the Chicago Stadium. “I figured we’d pull the series out of the fire right up till the very end,” reflected the Hab coach recently from the confines of his office in the Montreal Forum. “Our team had always played its best under pressure, and I felt they’d come through again this time.” In analyzing the events that led up to the Habs’ elimination in the series, Toe figures that if the handwriting was on the wall, he didn’t see it. The biggest shock he got, prior to actually being eliminated, was the performance the Canadiens came up with — or failed to come up with,…

Losses Killed Royals No hockey team can be expected to loose the likes of Gerry McNeil, Ken Mosdell. Kelly Burnett, Bill Sutherland. Tom Thurlby. Moe Mantha and Jacques Deslauriers and still hold its own. Such was the predicament that forced the Royals into last position this year after winning the title last season. New Scoring Record Little Bobby Rousseau’s playoff scoring this season has been so phenomenal that he set a new EPHL record for most goals, 10. Rousseau, bright young prospect for the NHL Canadiens next season, registered 35 goals in 38 games during the schedule. He played 15 games in the NHL as well. Fleming’s First Cup Goal Gave Team Lift To Win
DETROIT, Michigan The big silver Stanley Cup, emblematic of world hockey supremacy, stood on a table in the center of the steaming, jammed Chicago Black Hawk dressing room in Detroit’s Olympia. The Black Hawks had just won the Cup for the first time in 23 years. Captain Ed Litzenberger had received it from National Hockey League president Clarence Campbell in a post-game presentation after the final playoff triumph, 5-1, over the Red Wings in Detroit. Just before receiving it the Black Hawk players had carried goalie Glenn Hall around the ice on their shoulders. “Mr. Goalie” had made a total of 386 saves during the semifinal round against Montreal and the finals against Detroit. Reg Fleming, only rookie on the Chicago team this year, was the first man into the locker room after…
Norris Raps Statement By Adams
CHICAGO, Illinois — Jim Norris, chairman of the board of the Chicago Black Hawks, took a dim view of some remarks credited to Jack Adams, Detroit General Manager, after Chicago won the Stanley Cup. Adams was quoted as saying that “The league built them (the Hawks) up — all the teams helped. The Hawks were practically out of business but you have to give them lots of credit for the way they came back.” To which Norris, who jormally keeps in the background, replied “sour grapes,” commenting: “That’s about the cheapest remark anybody could say after being beaten. It’s not even close to being true.” Norris readily admitted that during the seven-year rebuilding job under General Manager Tommy Ivan the Black Hawks have acquired players from Montreal, Toronto, Detroit and New York. They have…
