The Doomed Man Was Spared DETROIT—You could have cut the head off Red Wing Howie Young with a hickory stick. In fact, Black Hawk Pierre Pilote almost did. There was a race between Pilote and his teammate, Bobby Hull, for the privilege of performing Young’s execution. Pierre won. At the last split second, Pilote granted the Red Bird a reprieve. His stick swished harmlessly through the air and Young escaped with his scalp—as hockey players generally do. “I was mad when I took that swing, but I guess I held back a bit,” Pilote confessed, in the frenzy of the Hawks’ dressing room, where the gleaming Stanley Cup stood in splendid isolation on the rubbing table. The biggest shock he got, prior to actually being eliminated, was the performance the Canadiens came up with — or failed to come up with,…

Indians Continue AHL Record Clip
HERSHEY, Pa.— The Springfield Indians, who set a bundle of records in winning the regular American League title, kept up their pace in the Calder Cup playoffs. In knocking off Hershey four straight, the Bay Staters swept both series in the minimum eight games. They were only the second team in AHL history to do this. The first was Indianapolis in 1949-50. The Indians also were the first club ever to win both the Cup and league titles two straight years … Coach Pat Egan’s Indians took out Hershey by scores of 4-3, 3-2, 7-3 and 3-0 and they did it with a 22-year-old rookie geolie George Wood. The young lad was taking over for Springfield’s ace netminder, Marcel Paille, who suffered a knee injury in the last semi-final game against…
