Punch Devises New Powerplay For Playoffs
TORONTO, Ont.— It was during a recent Chicago Toronto game that Coach Punch Imlach discovered his new powerplay. At the time, the big Chicago Black Hawks were leading 2-0. and in a previous powerplay try the Leafs had looked futile when Murray Balfour of the Hawks took a hooking penalty. Toronto again looked bad when Tod Sloan took another penalty. However, you can’t fool a smart coach like Punch Imlach for the third time. When Fleming got a Chicago penalty he sent on a new fivesome for the powerplay — Mahovlich, Shack, Kelly, Olmstead and Keon. It resulted in two goals on two successive Chicago penalties. Guelph Crew To Get Five Game Trials
NEW YORK, N.Y— General Manager Muzz Patrick and Coach Alf Pike were both given a vote of confidence by the New York Rangers owners last week. At the Rangers weekly press luncheon Admiral John Bergen, president of the Madison Square Garden Corporation said “there can’t be any gosh darn doubt about them coming back. I have to have faith in the people I deal with. I have that faith in Muzz and Alf.” The Admiral said it’s easy to be critical of a team that’s losing, but he has absolute confidence in both Muzz and the team. Arnett Nears Record Pete Durham, the robust defenceman who toiled for New Westminster, Seattle and Victoria, spent 505 minutes in the penalty box during: his tenure in the league which is the most any player has been penalized. Frank Arnett, of Seattle, is closing: the gap. He has been penalized a total of 755 minutes to date. Matthews High Scorer Ron Matthews, of Portland, is the highest scoring defenceman in the history of the league.
