Howe Tells All; Salary Is Over $25,000 A Year
DETROIT, Mich. — An article in the current issue of Sport quotes Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings as saying: “I figure that I’ve collected more than $40,000 in NHL bonuses alone since joining the Wings and that doesn’t include my regular salary, special team bonuses or my income from outside interests. “Then there’s the terrific NHL pension plan, the best in sports. When I’m 45 years old, I’ll be the league for the rest of my life.” The article, under Howe’s byline, went on to say that he is a wealthy man and that the Wings pay him more than $25,000 a…
Catch Kings, Rangers Newest Sonata As They Lift Curtain On Road Trip
Henry, Prentice, Cullen Back At Regular Posts NEW YORK, N.Y— This is THAT time of the year for the Rangers. The Ice Follies have moved into Madison Square Garden and the Blues are hitting the road with a bumpy six-straight games on foreign ice. The away stint begins on Jan. 12 at Boston and continues Jan. 14, at Detroit, Jan. 15 at Chicago, Jan. 18 at Toronto, Jan. 21 at Chicago and Jan. 22 at Chicago again. The welcome home party is slated for Jan. 25th when the Blueshirts entertain the Bruins. The feeling among Ranger players is that if any club can be overtaken…

I’d say he’s the fellow who’s been keeping the Leafs up there.” Did he think Bower had made a bigger contribution than Frank Mahovlich, the league’s new scoring sensation? “I’d say he has,” replied Gump. “I think he’s saved more games for them than Mahovlich has won.” Bower is undoubtedly enjoying his…
Imlach Kayoed
TORONTO, Ont, — Punch Imlach has been fined $200 for public criticism of National Hockey League game officials. Clarence Campbell, NHL president, levied the fine after investigating a Dec. 1 outburst in Montreal in which Imlach told reporters he thought referee Frank Udvari and linesman Loring Doolittle and George Hayes had contributed to Canadiens’ 4-1 win. He said he thought they should have been chosen as stars of the game. Campbell said Imlach’s remarks reflected on the “general competence and integrity” of the officials. Jim Proudfoot.…
