Howe Tells All; Salary Is Over $25,000 A Year
DETROIT, Mich. — An article in the current issue of Sport quotes Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings as saying: “I figure that I’ve collected more than $40,000 in NHL bonuses alone since joining the Wings and that doesn’t include my regular salary, special team bonuses or my income from outside interests. “Then there’s the terrific NHL pension plan, the best in sports. When I’m 45 years old, I’ll be the league for the rest of my life.” The article, under Howe’s byline, went on to say that he is a wealthy man and that the Wings pay him more than $25,000 a…

Sunday Nigh ts Success Leafs Biggest Story
Toronto, Ont. Don’t be surprised if Leafs ask the National Hockey league for more Sunday games. As of Jan., 1, Leafs had won 10 of their 12 Sabbath games in Detroit, Chicago, Boston and New York. They tied another and tost one for a net gain of 21 of a possible 24 points. Leafs’ Sunday night victims were Boston Bruins and New York Rangers four times each, Chicago and Detroit once apiece. Red Wings provided the tie and loss. “I just wish we were as consistent at home”, says coach Punch Imlach. Leafs had won seven, tied four and lost two on Saturday evenings and their Wednesday home record was a win, two losses and two draws. Leafs’ Jan. 1 victory in Madison Square Garden was their sixth in a row on the road (and sixth…

Player-of-the-Week
CHICAGO, Ill. The Chicago Black Hawks got back on the winning road last week as they ran their streak to seven straight games. Leading the Hawks out of the wilderness was their gritty little right winger Stan Mikita. Stan, the only player in the league born in Czechoslovakia, scored four goals and added an assist as the Hawks jumped to within seven points of the second place Toronto Maple Leafs. In the Braves’ seven game streak Mikita scored one or more goals in each. In that streak he scored nine goals, one more than his 70 game total last season. This was the Hawks’ winning record for the week: Staa Mikita Jan. 4, Chicago 3 at New York 3 (Mikita scored two). Jan. 5, Chicago 4 at Boston 3 (Mikita scored one goal). Jan. 8, Toronto 1…

“Leafs Could Take It All” Warns Adams
DETROIT, Mich, — After the Toronto Maple Leafs had crushed the Detroit Red Wings for the second time in as many nights, General Manager Jack Adams of the Wings said: “Those Leafs could take it all. That’s quite a hockey team and everything is going for them. Especially that big fellow (Frank Mahovlich). “He’s playing the way Gord Howe did the year he got 49 goals. That Mahovlich got his 35th in this game and with only a little better than half the season gone he could crack that 50 goal record of the Rocket. “He’s getting the breaks but he’s working and skating to earn them. And to think we almost snared him as a kid.”…
