MONTREAL, Que. — Last week the Montreal Canadiens continued to pace the league with three wins in four games. Their offensive power was still murderous for defending goalers, but spunky little Charlie Hodge, who has been a standout in goal for the past 14 games, suddenly made it as hard to score on the Champs as it is to stop them. In four games last week the Canadiens won three and lost one. In three games the opposition, Chicago, Toronto and Detroit were able to score only one goal. In the orner, the Rangers defeated the Canadiens 4-1 in New York. The remarkable little Hodge, who is 5’6” and tips the scales at 150 pounds is playing like a champion. Jerry, OHA’s Leading Cager fills In For Injured Men ST. CATHARINES, Ont.— The majority of Canadian teenage boys interested in playing hockey would consider themselves fortunate indeed if they could make a place for themselves with a junior “A” hockey team regardless of whether it was in goal, defence or on the forward line. However Jerry Cheevers, regular goaltender with St. Michael’s College Majors of the Ontario junior circuit is not satisfied with merely playing in the nets but also wants to try his hand up front. Cheevers led the junior guardians in goals-against average during the 1959-60 season with a mark of 3.08 in 36 games and he also topped the list in shutouts with five. FIRST ZERO FOR McCARTAN U.S. Olympic goal-keeping hero Jack McCartan, who was sent to Kitchener-Waterloo Beavers by N.Y. Rangers to gather experience, fashioned his first shutout in EPHL competition the day after Christmas when he blanked Royals. Beavers won the game in their own rink 4-0. PAPPIN BACK WITH WOLVES Jack Riley, G.M. of Rochester Amorks made Murph Chamberbin a welcome Christmas present when he returned right-winger Jim Pappin to the Sudbury Wolves.
