planning the field

Huddling With Milt Schmidt Milt Schmidt was sitting in a studio in the CBC building in Montreal on Saturday when Danny Gallivan asked us if we could ever remember when a Canadian coach was razzed in the Forum. We couldn’t, but we did recall a year when a fan wrote a letter to this department threatening to burn down the Forum if the late Dick Irvin was behind the bench at the Canadiens’ next home game. The Canadian Press picked up the story and the Canadiens, who were on a road trip, read it in the Toronto papers. Injury Bug Plays Rough Tune On Blues

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The Rangers now have a franchise to moan until the cows come home without having to worry about being labled “cry-babies”. When, on Dec. 11, Dean Prentice suffered a dislocated bone in his left wrist, the Blues set an unofficial three-month injury record for themselves and one which would embarass any team in the league judging by its length and severity. The Wings went into the weekend like the lion and came out like the lamb — a shorn lamb. And it appeared that the weekend would be recalled next March — or maybe even as early as February, as the weekend in which Montreal killed the race. “It looks like they’re on their way,” said Red Wing general manager Jack Adams. “Best game we played,” said Habitant coach Toe Blake after his club skated out of Detroit with a 5-1 victory after a 6-4 decision the night before in the Forum. The Detroiters gave their full shot in the Forum. Norm Ullman gave them a 1-0 lead before the fans had…

News From The Lakehead

FORT WILLIAM, Ont.— Jimmy Skinner chief scout of the Detroit Red Wings was in the Lakehead to have a look at the Red Wings prospects on their junior club, the Port Arthur North Stars. Skinner said he was very impressed with Junior hockey at the Lakehead this year, and particularly with a couple of his own farm hands … Chuck Lumsden ex pro who has singed with the Warroad Lakers for this year, has been loaned to the Winnipeg Maroons for their tour overseas, but now it looks like he won’t make the trip because of business … Just heard copies of the Hockey Records from our good friend Stan Spregile and everyone should pick up a copy of these items for their record collection… Fred Page president of the Thunder…
