Rangers Polishing Johns As Candidate For Top Rook Badge
NEW YORK. N.Y.— A grey, striped ice pack crackled in Don Johns’ hand as he nursed it along his tender ankle. “Does it hurt ” a guy in a long, blue raincoat asked. “A little but it’s not going to stop me from playing.” It appears that nothing short of decapitation will block Don Johns from making a name for himself in this, his first season in the NHL. Nobody is saying Johns, a blond, crew-cut defenseman, is going to win the rookie-of-the-year award. But, then again, nobody says he’s not. Anybody that has doubts ought to take a second look at this 22-year old out of St. George, Ont. (population 700, in a good year). Greensboro Big Surprise Of EHL After 1st Week
NEW YORK, N.Y.— The revemped Greensboro Generals have been the biggest surprise of the young season ( one-week-old ) Coach Ron Spong’s sextet scored 18 goals in their two games, both of which resulted in on-side victories over the Philadelphia Ramblers. And, as a result of this new found power, the Generals share first place in the Southern Division with the defending champion Johnstown Jets. Billy Forhan, who was with Chatham Maroons of the Sr. “A” OHA last season, scored four times in the Generals’ opening night 12-5 romp. His brother, Bobby (with Kitchener Dutchmen in 1959-60), chipped in with a goal and picked up four assists in the lid lifter. Wally Hergesheimer of Calgary, scored 4 goals against Portland Thursday night October 24 and teammate Ron Leopold scored-three times against Edmonton Saturday night October 26.
