Lefty Wilson Puts Goaler Mask On Market—Tagged Real Beauty By Bassen And Abel
DETROIT, Mich.— Ross (Lefty) Wilson has come a long ways from the day he set out as a trainer 16 years ago and taped a broken finger with friction tape. Now, in addition to his curing duties, Lefty is trying his hand at preventive medicine — in the form of goalie masks. The success of the venture is seen in Wilson’s delivery list. He has made eight fiberglass masks so far including ones for Detroit’s Terry Sawchuk and Hank Bassen and a number of minor league goalefs. And Lefty’s prices are rockbottom — only $25 a mask compared to the $300 asking price for the Jacques Plante specials. “Last year I did a little postgraduate work and watched the Detroit Lions (National Football League) trainer Millard Kelley make some protective padding from fi-berglas. I spent…

Here It Is, Another Zonv Week In EPHL
MONTREAL, Que.— One entire team was fined at the rate of $50 I per man. A leading scorer in this year’s league race, and a 45-goal man last season were put on waivers. Such were the zany moves to startle followers of the Eastern Pro Hockey League recently. Wren Blair, general-manager and coach of the Kingston Frontenacs, who is refreshingly original and daring in his operations, was the author of the wholesale jolt to the wallets of his hired help. After the Frontenacs had been plastered with an 8-3 shellacking in their own bailiwick by the Montreal Royals, Blair evidently believed that the players had not put out with the expected drive and Zeal which is needed to win a hockey game, or at least give what might be deemed an honest effort…

Weak Offense Cheap Penalties Keeping Barons From Gaining
CLEVELAND. O.— First major appraisal of the Barons after 14 games — too many cheap penalties and too few goals. In the firepower department they were sputtering along at an average of 2.5 goals per game. On the other hand the defense was holding up well with an average of 3.00 goals per game allowed. But what made Coach Jackie Gordon hot under the collar was the rash of cheap penalties. The cheap penalty is the kind that gains you nothing but can lose you much. It has no value other than that of intimidation. Most of the cheap shenanigans are costly, valueless and damaging to the team that gets them. Gordon was particularly chagrined following the Barons’ loss to Providence Reds at the Cleveland Arena Saturday, October 29. The Barons went into the second…

Guelph Lives Up To Advance Dope In OHA
ST. CATHARINES, Ont.— After the first week of the 1960-61 Ontario Hockey Association junior “A” schedule, the Guelph Royals have lived up to their advance notices as the team to beat for the provincial title. Led by their ever-dangerous scoring combination of Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle, the Royals scored back-to-back victories over Hamilton Red Wings, winning 6-2 in Hamilton, then staving off a late Red Wing rally in Guelph to register an 8-6 victory. Gilbert, who placed second to Chico Maki of the St. Catharines Teepees in the final scoring last year made a spectacular start in his bid to win the points championship in this his final year of teen-age hockey. Gilbert picked up eight points in the first two games, including a sensational five-goal burst before his home fans. While the Royals,…
