Uke Trio Not As Bad On Defense As Stats Show
BOSTON, Mass.— Of what value are the “goals against” statistics which are kept during National Hockey League games. In each NHL game a statistician records which players are on the ice when a goal is scored. The statistics purportedly referring to defence have been of help to opponents of the Bruins this fall. Bronco Horvath, Johnny Bucyk and Vic Sta-siuk, the Bruins’ famed Uke Line, have read regularly how they’ve given up more goals than they’ve been able to score. The allegation is based on the figures of NHL statisticians. And they’ve bothered the line which, for the past three years, has been the heart, liver and lungs of the Bruins’ offense. “We’ve heard how bad we are defensively so often,” said mild-mannered Bucyk, “that it’s about time someone straightened out the records. Those figures are not…

Greensboro Big Surprise Of EHL After 1st Week
NEW YORK, N.Y.— The revemped Greensboro Generals have been the biggest surprise of the young season ( one-week-old ) Coach Ron Spong’s sextet scored 18 goals in their two games, both of which resulted in on-side victories over the Philadelphia Ramblers. And, as a result of this new found power, the Generals share first place in the Southern Division with the defending champion Johnstown Jets. Billy Forhan, who was with Chatham Maroons of the Sr. “A” OHA last season, scored four times in the Generals’ opening night 12-5 romp. His brother, Bobby (with Kitchener Dutchmen in 1959-60), chipped in with a goal and picked up four assists in the lid lifter. The Forhans and Don Carter, one of the returnees, share team scoring honors with six points each. CHARLOTTE — VeteTan Don “Nipper” O’Hearn…

Player - of - the - Week
BOSTON, Mass.— The Boston Bruins, who went more than two weeks for their first victory of the season, could have saved themselves a long wait had they just kept Charley Burns from the season’s start. It seems that since the Bruins recalled Burns from Kingston of the Eastern Professional Hockey league, they have been a team with new spirit. It’s hard to believe that Burns, who scored only 10 goals last season, has suddenly become the sparkplug of the team. But since his arrival the club has won three, tied, won and lost two. In six games he scored two goals and assisted on six others, besides being the club’s number one penalty killer. Last week, the Bruins split two games. They lost to the Red Wings 8-5 in Detroit on November…

Wilson One Man Herd For Eddolls’ Bisons
BUFFALO. N.Y.— Larry Wilson once remarked that “hockey’s just work, work, work once you leave junior.” From the effort that the veteran Buffalo center has put forth the past 12 hockey seasons, playing is obviously a labor of love. Wilson, currently in his sixth campaign centering for the Buffalo Bisons, leads the American League in scoring as this edition of The Hockey News goes to press. His line, with veteran Dick Gamble and rookie Wayne Hicks on the wings, has virtually carried the entire scoring burden through Buffalo’s first dozen Carnes. “They’re playing as well as any line in the league right now,” praised Coach Frank Eddolls. “All three are skating, working every minute. I’ve never seen Gamble work as hard as he has been. He’s in those corners, digging for that puck. “Of course, he and…
