Muzz’s Early Ratings — Better Than Bruins Or Red Wings

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The New York Rangers open the NHL season at home Oct. 5th full of vim, vigor and visions of a playoff berth. Following the opener with Boston, the Blueshirts zip up to Toronto Oct. 8, then to Chicago on the 9th and return home to the Gotham Oct. 11th for the most encouraging — they hope — schedule-opening in history. In the past, the Blues considered themselves in good shape if they broke even in the first four games of the season. Those were the days when the Rangers were obliged to play anywhere from three to six straight road games before opening at home. Now that this injustice has been corrected, members of the Ranger family are muttering quietly about a speedy start, perhaps two out of the first two…

Red Wings Lose TV, Radio Sponsor

DETROIT, Mich. — The Red Wings may be blacked out this season. The club’s long-time brewery sponsor notified the Wings three weeks before the start of the season that it wasn’t going to renew its option for either telecasts or broadcasts of its home games. To make is more difficult, a clause in the contract prohibits the Red Wings from engaging another brewery sponsor this season. With one week to go before the first home game, the Wings still didn’t have a sponsor. The Red Mings wanted the sponsor to carry both home and away games on radio this season. Only home games have been broadcast in the past and a 15-minute resume was given after road games.…

There’s Still Room For A 14% Increase At The Gate MONTREAL, Que.— “Bigger and Better than ever.” President Clarence Campbell has used those same words in before each new National Hockey League seasons for the past four or five years. He was reminded of repetitions statements just before the new season opened and replied : “I know it’s beginning to sound corny but it’s still a proven fact. Last year attendance around the league was the highest it’s been since the 1947-48 season and in those years you could put on a midget show or a rat race and still get a crowd. “We drew 2,400,000 last season and that was only 17,000 below the best year we ever had. Attendance was up in Boston, Detroit and Chicago and of course they sell out every year…
