Need For Wingers Seen To Keep Team In Hunt Ne wcomers May Fill Bill

DETROIT, Mich.— The Red Wings are about ready to start getting some answers to the questions they’ve been asking themselves all summer. And there have been many questions—who will be on right wing behind Gordie Howe? Who will fight it out for left wing behind Alex Delvecchio and Gary Aidcorn. And can Terry Sawchuk spark the Wings to another good start? It may be recalled that Saw-chuk’s sensational net-minding in the first two months of the season gave the Wings a cushion that they just about used up in the last half of the season. If it hadn’t been for the fast getaway, the Wings would have watched the first round of the playoffs on television as well as the finals. Right wing has been the most pressing problem. Hawks To Revolutionize Training Program, Set Up Two Camps For Better Conditioning

CHICAGO, Ill.— In a departure from their ordinary pre-season training routine, the Chicago Black Hawks this year will operate two separate camps. Some 27 “regulars” are to report to the main Black Hawk camp at St. Catherines, Ont. The remainder — around 35 candidates for the various Chicago farm system teams — are scheduled to do their training 15 miles away in Welland, Ont. Black Hawk coach Rudy Pilous will be in charge at St. Catherines, where the entire Chicago organization has trained in recent previous years, and Frank Eddolls, new coach of Chicago’s Buffalo farm team, will be in charge at Welland. Reason for the revolutionary change to two separate camps is both psychological and physical. Under the one-camp arrangement it was easy for the veterans to get lost in the crowd and coast through…

CALGARY— Righwinger Wally Hergesheimer has been assigned to Calgary Stampeders of the Western Hockey League by Chicago Black Hawks of the National League. Officials of the Calgary club said the 33-year-old Winnipeg native had been obtained from the Buffalo Bisons through the parent Chicago club. Hergesheimer has played since 1957 at Buffalo. He had played previously with Chicago after being traded by New York Rangers. Calgary also announced they had sent right winger Jackie McLeod to Victoria of the WHL. McLeod has been a standout in the WHL for the last eight seasons. He has been selected to the allstar team three times and ranks fourth among all-time WHL goalscorers with 246 to his credit. Last season McLeod managed 28 goals and 28 assists in 62 games. An injury kept him out of eight games…

Broken Neck In Car Crash Fatal For Adam Brown, 40; Performed With 3 Teams

HAMILTON— Obituaries are cold, impersonal things. They tell their solemn stories with statistics but they are wax fruit, a star without a sky, paper flowers in a cardboard vase, an empty room on a silent street. They tell of plaster saints, no people. The papers said that Adam Brown, 40, was killed when, his car crashed into a cement bridge at 12.59 a.m. on Aug. 9. And then followed figures about his National Hockey League career featured by a 24-goal season with Detroit Red Wings. He also played for Chicago and Boston. They might have mentioned that he had keys, a wallet and a folded $2 bill in his pocket when examined at the morgue. But Adam Brown was more than just a number on an accident report. He was the seven year-old kid who came to Canada…
