playing the field
The Late Lester Patrick Conn Smythe was the man who recruited the original New York Ranger team, though he never coached or managed them. It was felt that a bigger hockey name was needed to head them and the job fell into Lester Patrick’s lap. That was one of those fortunate twists of circumstance, as Lester proved to be the ideal man for New York and Conn put professional hockey over in a big way in Toronto. Lester, who was born in Drum-mondville, Que., could speak French and he made the most of it in New York. John Kieran was writing the sports column for The Times in the 1920s and he and Lester became good friends. John had played a little hockey and spoke an academic French, which was all that…

Three OHA Junior Clubs Seeking New Ice Coaches
TORONTO, Ont.— The Ontario Hockey Association’s junior coaching union may be back almost to full strength soon as decisions are scheduled on pilots for the Marlboros, Guelph own St. Michael’s. General manager Jack Humphreys will name New York Rangers’ choice to handle the new-look Guelph team. Since the name Biltmores must be changed, the new title likely will be Royals. Rangers are interested in both Billy Reay, former Maple Leaf coach, and Dit Clapper, more recently with Buffalo Bisons of the American Hockey League. Reay would get the nod at Kitchener if Rangers succeed in switching their Three Rivers franchise in the Eastern Professional Hockey League to that city. Then Clapper will be favored for Guelph. St. Michael’s Majors joined the list of OHA hockey clubs without a coach when Bob Goldham announced he…

’Happy’ With Canadiens, Don Marshall Against Trade
MONTREAL, Que.— Don Marshall knows what side of the fence the grass is greener. It’s the Montreal Canadiens’ side. Marshall, penalty-killer deluxe for the World Champs, said he would be sorry if he were ever traded to the Rangers. “I would not like to go to New York. My family and home is in Montreal, and I knew the players very well. Also, Montreal pays well and those playoff splits are very good.” Marshall made the comments at a Napanee, Ont., banquet. He had been asked to comment on a report Rangers had offered $100,000 for Don Turner, Ab MacDonald and himself.…
