Army Threatens To Take Away Fern’s Star As Police Chief

BOSTON, Mass.— The Bruins used to have to wait until Ferny Flaman took the ice to instigate police action against an unruly member of the opposition, but not any more. Now when Flaman is on the bench a Bruin in trouble can whistle for Bob Armstrong. This season Armstrong has become an effective alternate “policeman.” A policeman in hockey parlance is a strong arm man who disciplines disrespectful opponents. A policeman is usually highly regarded by members of his own team and their supporters and held in complete disrepute by the opposition and its supporters. For nearly 15 years Flaman has been a Boston Garden hero with his aggressiveness and fighting ability. This year Armstrong has been understudying the Bruins’ captain. A 200-pound defenseman, Armstrong took over Flaman’s role when Ferny was out for a…

Fielder Hits Slump, MacFarland Too; Even Bad Men Go Straight

SEATTLE, Wash.— Guyle Fielder, the league leading scorer, continues in his scoring slump picking up only one point the past week but continues to lead the individual scorers with 73 points on 25 goals and 48 assists. Arnie Schmautz, also of Victoria, has the most game winning assists 9. Three players share ‘player of the week’ honors with 6 points each. Colin Kilburn of Vancouver with 3 goals and the…

Speaking on Sport

Clients Had Their Doors Open While Detroit headlines were screaming that defence star Red Kelly was quitting hockey rather than accept a shift to New York, the phone at the Re-Nu Tool Co. kept ringing. In a single day there were 45 calls from clients, old and new, who said they would like salesman Kelly to call on them. Never again is Kelly likely to find so many doors flung open. It looked like the logical time to hang up the shillelah—especially after 12½ years in the big league. He had a new home, a beautiful wife who has a class of kids anxious to follow in her skate marks as a star on ice. In a few months the Kellys will welcome their first baby. Considering the circumstances, Red can be…

Litz Determined To Come Back To Game This Year

CHICAGO, Ill.— Capt. Ed Litzenberger of the Black Hawks faces possibly the stiffest comeback test that may ever be placed before a hockey player. It looked for a time last month like he was well on his way out of three month slump that had dropped him from the role of a contender for the NHL scoring title for the first time in three years, but then God, fate or someone stepped in with the crudest of body blocks. As most know by now, Ed’s beautiful wife, Doreen, was fatally injured and the Hawk star himself was hurt when their car crashed a few hours after a 3-1 Hawk conquest of the Rangers January 17 as they drove toward their home in Glenview, a northern Chicago suburb. At first declared in “critical” condition, “Litz”…
