Player-of-the-Week

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Coach-of-the-Year in the American Hockey League? Well Steve Kraftcheck of the Rochester Americans would be a wonderful choice, considering the job he is doing with his team. The Americans, slow starters for the first weeks of the year, have jumped into second place in the race, and are not too far behind the Springfield Indians in first. Kraftcheck performs double duty with the Amerks. Not only does he do an expert job of coaching, but as a defensemen he is an all-star. He leads all AHL defensemen in scoring. This season he has scored one goal and added 29 assists for 30 points. Last week the Americans split four games. They defeated the Hershey Bears 8-1 and the Cleveland Barons 5-3 and lost to Cleveland 5-3 and to Springfield 3-2. Kraftcheck had…

Herd Crushed By Injuries Again—Bailey, Irwin Out

BUFFALO, N.Y.— It has been suggested that sportswriters be substituted for in covering the Buffalo Bisons’ games. Who would take over? Why, in order that expert reporting be done, medical writers would be moved in. For, it seems, almost every time Coach Dit Clapper sends his team on the ice, someone comes off less healthy than he was at game time. Latest casualty is Bob Bailey, the tall but not timid center who was less than three weeks removed from his lengthy league suspension. Bailey suffered a broken right leg in a collision with Rochester’s Pat Hannigan in the first period of a game in the Flower City Jan. 30. Indications were that he’ll miss the remainder of the campaign. Bailey’s was the fourth broken bone injury a Buffalo player had suffered this season. Defenseman Ron Ingram and…

Linesmen-Player Run-Ins Causing EPHL Problems—Brown Suggests Way Out

MONTREAL, Que.— A little more discretion by the linesmen might promote more orderly progress of games in the opinion of Gerry Brown, Coach of Sault Ste. Marie Thunderbirds. Brown believes that it’s the tendency of the blueline patrolmen to argue with the players, both on the ice, and on the bench, that has caused many untoward incidents in Eastern Pro League games. “I’m not complaining, and I don’t want to be put in that position,” Brown makes it clear, “but I’m sure that if these fellows would keep silence when they are challenged by the players they’d have a better time themselves and the conduct of our games would be far more orderly.” Brown suggests that immediately a player becomes abusive to the point of profanity the linesman should promptly report him to the…
