Doug Jr. Wouldn’t Change Colors, Not Even For Dad

MONTREAL, Que.—Loyalty knows no bounds in the Harvey family these days. Doug Jr., a great hockey fan and himself a budding minor outdoor player, was asked by his famous dad during Doug Harvey Night festivities Dec. 3 at the Forum if he’d make things look good and put on a Ranger sweater. “No sir,” said Doug Jr. firmly. “I’m not putting on any Ranger sweater. No sir, I’ll put on a Canadien sweater if you like, but no Ranger sweater, no Leaf sweater.” “All right, all right,” said Doug senior hastily. “I guess you’re right at that. I just thought it would be a kind of a tribute to our visitors to wear one of their sweaters.” But Doug Jr. got in the last word, a trait inherited from his daddy. “No Ranger sweater,”…

Outsmarting Those Who’ll Make Him Target, Will Be Real Test

CHICAGO, Ill.— A handful of reporters gathered about the desk of coach Rudy Pilous in his subterranean office at Chicago Stadium. They had just seen the Black Hawks go down, 4-0, to Toronto, and the atmosphere was something less than cheerful. The Leafs had whipped home three goals in the final period, but Pilous felt, under the circumstances, the Hawks didn’t deserve any. criticism. “The effort was there,” he said, and then went on to point out the Hawks were playing their third game in three nights and didn’t quite have the reserve to pressure the Leafs’ goalie John Bower like they did in the first two periods. “If we could’ve popped a few in during the first period,” said Bobby Hull, “it would’ve been a different game.” Hull, attired in a pair of red…

Boisvert’s Shadow Sends Mayer Running For Hendy

CLEVELAND, O.— Gil Mayer, the tiny long-time goalie star of American Hockey League warfare, made the biggest news in the Cleveland hockey camp as the New Year rolled in when he angrily denounced the presence of a substitute goalie. Mayer charged that Barons’ boss Jim Hendy had brought back Gilles Boisvert to use as an “ax over my head.” Mayer declared that unless Boisvert was sent away he would refuse to play goal for Cleveland. The incident arose when Boisvert, who had filled in for 13 games while Mayer recovered from a badly fractured jaw, returned to Cleveland suddenly just before the Barons went up against the Rochester Americans at the Cleveland Arena Dec. 30. Boisvert walked into the Cleveland dressing room just before the game. He didn’t change into his uniform. “He stood in the…
