Al Recalls How New York’s Fans Drove Him From Gardens To Chi

TORONTO, Ont.— Allan (Sam) Stanley, one of the more venerable workmen in the National Hockey league, finds he improves with age. “I think that each season has been a little better than the last,” says Sam, whose first big-league season was 1948-49, which, excluding one year spent in the Western league, makes this his 12th NHL campaign. He’s 33. This steady improvement could culminate in an all-star bonus this season. Coach Punch Imlach insists that in studying the NHL situation closely, he’s been unable to detect a defenceman who’s playing better than Stanley. His cool competence undoubtedly has been a chief reason for the Maple Leafs’ hurry-up start this term. Sam never has been placed on an official all-star team, although many observers claim he’s been one of the league’s best rearguards for years. Toronto…

AHL Appeal By Herd, On Bailey Sit-Out, Expected To Be Nixed

BUFFALO, N.Y.— The appeal of Bob Bailey’s 12-game suspension by American Hockey League president Richard Canning was imminent as this issue of The Hockey News went to press. Bailey, veteran right winger of the Buffalo Bisons, was suspended until Buffalo’s game of Jan. 9 for his part in a battle with Springfield’s Ted Harris. It was the third suspension of Bailey’s AHL career. He was fined $575 for punching referee Jerry Olinski during a Calder Cup playoff game in 1955 when he was playing with Pittsburgh against Buffalo. He was suspended for the remainder of the playoffs and, following a hearing, was reinstated in time for the ’55-56 campaign. Past Record Against Him A year ago, when with Cleveland, the 28-year-old Bailey was suspended for a game when he and Hershey’s Larry Zeidel engaged in a…

Fronts Come To Life On Tessier’s Rash Of Goals

MONTREAL, Que.— The resurgence of Kingston Frontenacs in the past two weeks has caused the latest buzz in the Eastern Professional Hockey League. The Fronts established a couple of firsts in their uprising, which gave some of the coaches of rival teams a certain secret smugness, even though their own hired hands where somewhat discomfitted by the results. All along such crystal-gazers as Murph Chamberlain at Sudbury, Sammy Pollock in Hull, Gerry Desaulniers at Trois-Rivieres and Flyod Curry, the ex-Honest Blocker of NHL Canadiens, now mentor of the Montreal Royals, have stoutly maintained that these Frontenacs were to be feared, like Cassius the villain in Shakespeare’s classic “Julius Ceasar”. The Frontenacs, doormats since the first levelling in the new pro circuit, went into Sudbury on December 9 and put a gag on the…

Carver, Miron, Raglan Trio Puts Washinqton Into Contender Spot

WASHINGTON, D.C.— One of the outstanding early season performances in the Eastern Hockey League’s reorganized set-up, this year expanded from six to eight teams, is being credited to the Washington Presidents now skating under the sponsorship of Peter Carver of New York City. Carver, the Presidents’ third owner and sponsor in as many years, is an internationally respected consulting engineer for the construction of ice skating rinks and has assisted in building over 100 such rinks all over the world. The new Presidents this season have been entered in the Eastern League’s Southern Division otherwise comprised of Johnstown, Pa., and Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C. The Norther Division is made of Clinton, N.Y., Philadelphia, New Haven and the New York Rovers of Commack. N.Y. The Rovers and the Greensboro Generals are the circuit’s new additions. The…
