Mayer In Montreal To Get Replica Of Plante’s Mask To Use When He Gets Back
In Dry Dock But the Barons’ actual capacity to play the game has still not received a fair test at this stage of the season. On only a few occasions have they been able to put on ice the team that Gordon whipped together during training base operations at St. Thomas, Ont. Until their No. 1 goalie, Gil Mayer, resumes action and until Bill (The Destroyer: Shvetz gets his torpedo tubes back in the lineup, nobody can accurately testify to the strength of the Barons. Certainly they have been less than overpowering in their performance to date. But Mayer is one of the top rubber stoppers in the business, at least at American Hockey League level. And Shvetz has no peer as a stalwart, bone-crushing wingman. Shvetz’ leg ailment has been slow to respond. A heavily-muscled…
Player-of-the-Week
HERSHEY, Pa.–While the Hershey Bears, Calder Cup Champions of the American League, were having trouble getting onto the win track this season, their ace Willie Marshall, who started just as slow as the team, wasn’t taking quite so long. Last week, the Kirkland Lake, Ontario, pivot blasted away for nine points on four goals and five assists as the Bears split their week’s play by winning one, tieing one and dropping a game. Marshall, who in two seasons scored 75 goals for the Bears, was the big gun for them in their 8-2 swamping of the first place Springfield Indians at Hershey last Wednesday, November 18th. He scored one goal and picked up five assists for a six point night. Oddly enough his linemates Dune Fisher and Claude Laforge had just…
Boomer, As Usual Sidelined By Old Injury Jinx Again
MONTREAL, Que.–The injury jinx that has dogged veteran Bernie Geoffrion of the Canadiens throughout his sparkling National Hockey League career has again knocked the club’s high-scoring winger out of action. Boom Boom, who has failed to go the route in eight of his nine NHL seasons because of injuries, sustained a cut tendon last week in a game against Boston Bruins and will be lost to the World Champs for a period of ten days. Geoffrion suffered the painful injury in the very first minute of play against the Bruins here when he collided with Hub defenceman Doug Mohns in a corner and had to retire with a six-stitch cut. The setback was another in a series of mishaps that have kept the Boomer idle in 79 games during the past four years. Club…
Credit Howe With Winner In 3-2 Win Over Chicago
DEROIT, Mich.–The Olympia Stadium was dark and all the players had left for home when Howe officially “scored” his 10th goal of the season. The action came in the final period of a game with Chicago and the goal was a big one. It broke a 2-2 tie at 13:27 of the third period and stood up for a 3-2. victory. To all the viewers it looked like Howe had fed a passout which Alex Delvecchio flicked home from close range. In the lockerroom, however, both players insisted that Delvecchio had not made it, the Howe’s passout had deflected back in off a Chicago players’ stick or leg. Club officials telephoned this information to the home of Doug Young, one-time Detroit captain and star, and now the official scorer. Young agreed to the…
