Ted Lindsay Closes In On 1,000 Game Mark, Rocket 2nd
CHICAGO, Ill.—If veteran Chicago Black Hawks left winger Ted Lindsay can play the full 70 games (or even 69) without mishap this season, he will become the first of the current NHL players to hit the 1,000 game mark in regular season play. He had played 931 games going into this season. Four games behind him is Montreal’s Maurice Richard.…
Pennington, Back To Amateur, “Good Enough For WHL”—Pike
WINNIPEG, Man.—Coach Alf Pike of the Winnipeg Warriors of the Western Hockey League went on a duck hunting trip last week, and when he returned he found one of his players missing. Gone from the Winnipeg scene was big Cliff Pennington. Last season Pennington played with the Flin Flon Bombers of the Manitoba Junior League. He spent training camp at Montreal with the Canadiens, who have NHL rights to him. He reported to the Warriors for a trial and then left to go back to the juniors. “Guess he’s gone for the year,” said Pike. “I dunno much about it. Perhaps he thought he could do with another year before turning pro, and maybe also get more money for signing too. “He looked to me, though, that he was ready for our…
Packers Pack Solid Punch In OpeningWeek In OSHL
KELOWNA, B.C.— The Okanan Senior Hockey League kicked off it’s 1959-60 schedule over the weekend with all four clubs in action. As a result of weekend play, the Kelowna Packers have taken over sole possession of first place with two straight victories. Friday night in Penticton, Packers had little trouble in turning back the Penticton Vees 9-4. The next evening in their home opener the Kelowna crew delighted a home town crowd of 1,350 with a well earned 5-3 win over the Vernon Canadians. In other weekend action the Vernon Canadians skated all over the Kamloops Chiefs at Vernon with a 10-2 victory, however the following evening the Chiefs roared backing their home debut and crushed the winless Vees from Penticton 11-2. In all 46 goals got past opposition netminders in the four…
Leafs Quickly Tab Ted As “A Kid Going Places”
TORONTO, Ont.— Maple Leafs are now convinced they made a shrewd deal when they paid New York Rangers the waiver price of $20,000 for Ted Hampson, the 22-year-old freshman centre. Originally, they didn’t count on Hampson as a first-stringer. They thought he’d help fill out a starting lineup for their Rochester team in the American league. They hoped he’d become a bigleaguer at some later date. However, Hampson was impressive enough in training camp and the pre-season exhibition games to qualify as a replacement for Larry Regan, who missed the first scheduled game because of an injury. From the first shift, Hampson looked so good, making plays for Dick Duff and George Armstrong, that Regan didn’t get his old job back when he was ready to rejoin the club. He was reserved for…
