Golf Head, Ex-Vic. Former Canadian amateur golf champion (1932) Gordon Baxter Taylor, elected president of Royal Canadian Golf Association at the annual meeting last week, is a former Quebec Leaguer. He played on the forward lines for the old Victorias of Montreal prior to overseas service as an officer with the Black Watch in World War II. Pronovost Hits Another Claude Pronovost, who has tended goal for five pro clubs in his three and a half year pro career, stepped into the goals for his sixth on the night of Thursday, February 5th against Toronto. He replaced Jacques Plante in the third period of the game and allowed two goals as Canadians were beaten by the Leafs 6-3. Abel Tries Old Method Of ‘Lonesome Forward’ To Stem Tide Of Onrushers
DETROIT, Mich.— Football had its “lonesome end” formation and now hockey has it’s “lonesome forward”. While the name may be different, the formation which Sid Abel’s Red Wings sprung against the Boston Bruins was almost as old as hockey itself. Sometimes called the “center drop”, the strategy was nothing more than moving one of the forwards back behind the two defensemen as a one-man rear guard. Alex Delvecchio was the Detroiter who got the “lonesome forward” assignment, it being used only when his line was in the game. As a result Delvecchio stayed back with goalie Terry Sawchuk whenever the Wings moved out with the puck. Only when the Detroiters got all the way into the attacking zone would Alex venture as far as the center red line. There he stayed ready for a breakaway. This…
