Major Loop Scouts Rush For Second Look At Ken After Nixing Him First
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— The big league scouts last year liked Kenny Schinkel because he was an “honest” hockey player. The star Springfield Indian forward was a hard skater, an untiring worker, aggressive and in general a good all-around American Leaguer. But, the ivory hunters said, he doesn’t have quite enough scoring ability. If he can click for 50 to 70 points, he could make any National League club, they agreed, because Kenny can do all the other things well enough. He scored only 38 points with the Calder Cup finalists last season so that put him at least a dozen away from the NHL. The scouts passed up the 24-year-old Indian rightwinger. And no NHL club would so much as risk the $15,000 draft price to get him. This year, the scouts have been following him around all…

Michael Gerald Melynk came up through the local Maple Leaf organization. In his last year with the junior Oil Kings he took second place in the scoring race behind Norm Ullman now with the Red Wings. Then came “Bud” Poile with the contract to play with the Flyers. This however wasn’t Gerry’s first swing at the pro circles for during the’52 to’54 era the youngster played in three encounters.
