Plays it Rough
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Someone just about summed up the current edition of the Washington Presidents when they said “The Presidents aren’t good, but they’re rough.” Last year’s Eastern Hockey League champions have spent most of the season in fifth place. And most observers feel the reason for this is that instead of concentrating on scoring goals, the Presidents are more concerned with maiming the opposition. In fact, the Washington club has resorted to such rough house tactics, the New Haven Blades, in an unprecidented move, filed a letter of protest withe the league over the way the Presidents players conduct themselves on the ice. Probably the roughest of the Presidents is winger Wally Kullman. In the first 20 games played by the team, Kullman accumulated 82 minutes in the sinbin to lead the league in…
Kingston Fires Brabin As GM
KINGSTON, Ont.—The Kingston Merchants of the Ontario Hockey Association eastern senior ‘A’ series last week fired general manager Wally Brabin. Brabin, commenting on his dismissal said the club executive asked for his resignation effective immediately. Brabin spent six years as a member of the Whitby and Oshawa hockey executive. The move, he said came as a complete surprise to him. “When a team is in last place there always has to be a goat,” he said. Members of the club’s executive refused to comment on the firing of Brabin. However, Wally said he did not think they would hire another GM. He said the Merchants would probably continue with Bus Gagnon as coach with club President Reg Walton assuming the general manager’s duties. Brabin said that an economy drive was one factor in…
HENRY’S GOAL OUTPUT DROPS WITHOUT DAVE
NEW YORK, N.Y. During Fall training camp Camille Henry was worried that the loss of Dave Creighton would mean a decline in Cammy’s goal scoring, and so far he’s been right. He’s four goals short now. You’d worry, too. if you were the little Ranger left wing. He has a bonus clause—$500 for 25 goals and another, $500 for 30—and being a newlywed he could use the dough. New York’s Lady Byng Trophy winner and second all-star foresaw this last September when he cracked, “The rookies are good rookies but to be honest I’d like to have Creighton back as my center.” All Cammy can do is dream about Creighton now. The big center is with Toronto. Meanwhile, coach Phil Watson is trying to find a spot which will will wring the most efficiency…
Amerks Let Aidcorn Do It—And He Shows’em He’s Able
ROCHESTER, N.Y. The Rochester Americans have been playing that way recently—with the name Gary substituted for George. And the Gary that has been “doing it” for the Amerks is Gary Aidcorn, 23-year-old winger headed for his best season in his fourth year in professional hockey. The 5-11, 178-pound skater has been one of the hottest goal getters in the American Hockey League since being returned to Rochester by the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 16. In his first 11 games following his return, Aidcorn collected nine goals. He also had four assists for that stretch. Seven of Gary’s goals came in five straight games from November 30 to December 13. In addition to doing all of his club’s scoring (three goals) in two consecutive contests, Aidcorn netted at least one goal in the other tilts…
