Bucko Fired As Rochester Boss
ROCHESTER, N.Y.—Bucko McDonald, appointed to coach the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League just prior to the start of the season, has been let-out. Sam Pollock, farm director of the Montreal Canadiens replaced him as temporary coach. No reason was given for the dismissal of McDonald but it is felt that the Americans, under him have not been producing as they should. The Americans are supplied with talent by Montreal and Toronto of the NHL. It was also reported in the Rochester Times-Union that the Rochester owners have given general manager Paul Bi-beault $100,000 to $150,000 to buy new players.…
Scoring Race is Close it Andy, Litz Up On Top
MONTREAL. Que.— Only nine points separate the first and last place teams in the National Hockey League. Canadiens are in first place with 20 points. Toronto Maple Leafs are in last place with 11. In between are Boston Bruins with 18-and holders of second place; New York Rangers in third with 17 points; Detroit Red Wings are in fourth with 16 points, same number of points as Chicago, but the Red Wings have one more win than the Hawks. Andy Bathgate of New York and Eddie Litzenberger of Chicago pace the point parade for the second successive week. Both players have 20 points’ although Bathgate has more goals than. Litzenberger. BOSTON, Mass.—Coach Milt Schmidt may be unhappy about the play of his Bruins but he certainly can’t be unhappy about the play of Don McKenney. While the Bruins were winning one, losing two and tieing one last week, the slim six foot 170 pounder was scoring nine points for himself. He jumped into third place in the individual scoring roce and was tied with Andy Bathgate of the Rangers of the Rangers for the most goals scored with 11. Don didn’t get his points the easy way either. He scored six goals in those four game and picked up three assists. In his first 18 games he has scored 11 goals and picked up seven assists for 18 points. This could be Don’s greatest season since he joined the Bruins in 1954-55. It’s…
Hendy To Battle AgainstRenewal Of NHL Drafting
It was a black day in the history of Cleveland hockey when General Manager Jim Hendy of the Barons affixed of signature to a document known as the Joint Affiliation Agreement. That was the scratch of a pen that all but buried the local ice hopes. Included in the agreement was a "draft plan”. Apparently innocent enought on paper, it proved to be murder to Cleveland on Ice. Through it they this season lost the services of their greatest goaltender in history, Johnny (China Wall) Rower. Bower was drafted by Toronto Maple Leafs. Through it they lost the services of Steve Kraftcheck, au all star in the American League regardless of what he is in any other league, and one of the most popular and effective players to ever wear the Cleveland colors.
