Ex-AHL Stars Now AHL Officials
NEW YORK, N.Y.—Two of the most famous players of past years. Les Cunningham and Freddie Thurier are now linesmen for the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League. Thurier holds the AHL record for most all time goals, 519 and total points, 744. Up till last season he also had the most assists for a career with 425, but this was surpassed by Jackie Gordon, the present playing coach of Cleveland who set a new record of 428 assists. By a strange turn of events. Thurier was an official in the game when Gordon established the new assist record. Thurier also has the most assists for playoff hockey, 5-3 and the most points, 85 for post season play. During his long career, spent mostly as a player for Cleveland, Cunningham had…
MacFarlands Aren’t Good Enough To Win In Own Loop
CORNWALL, Ont.— There is very little joy in Belleville this hockey season. The Mac Farlands of that city, who swept to the Allan Cup last season in a great march, have been going nowhere fast so far in the Eastern OHA schedule. What is so important about this, you might ask? Lots of clubs aren’t going too well this early in the season. The important thing is the Macs are Canada’s representatives in the World Hockey Championships this winter at Prague. The eyes and ears of Canada’s hockey fans are focused on Belleville and the Macs. Up to this point in the season, they have had very little to rave about. In their first ten games, the Macs have a very unimpressive three wins, six losses and a tie record. This is good enough for…
Adams Finally Finds A Fault With Big Gord
In The Detroit Times, DETROIT, Mich.— When Jack Adams finds fault with Gordie Howe—that’s news! And the Red Wings’ manager, who has always called The Big Fellow the greatest player he’s ever seen voiced his opinion today. “Gordie isn’t skating. He’s not barrelling into the net like he used to.” said Adams. “He’s playing what most people would call great hockey, stick-handling all over the ice and making fancy plays. “But he slows down when he gets over the blue line and gives his checkers a chance to swarm over him.” The Wings’ general manager declared the five-time NHL scoring champion has, had his greatest years when he just roared over the blue line, evading or shaking off checkers to let go with his big special at the first good chance. Now Howe has relapsed to a…
OHA Senior Pre-Season Choices Fail To Shine
STATFORD. Ont.— Sudbury Wolves and Kitchener Dutchmen, preseason co-favorites to win the NOHA-OHA senior “A” championship, are running second and fifth in the standing, and the big surprise comes from Chatham, where the Maroons, under their new coach, Johnny Horeck, have won five of six games and head the class by one point. Kitchener and Windsor Bulldogs, the third OHA team, are tied for the second slot, with the former having won four and tied one in seven starts, and the latter four wins and one tie in eight games. Sault Ste. Marm Greyhounds, with Don Grosso the new coach, have a three-and-two mark; Sudbury has won only one game while tying two and dropping four, and bring ing up the rear is the third NOH A team North Bay, with but…
