Kirk’s First Herd Bares No Resemblance To Last

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Bobby Kirk is bringing into Buffalo from the Bisons’ Stamford, Ontario, training camp a team as new to the Queen City scene as the coach himself. The axe has fallen. General Manager Fred Hunt kept his promise to change faces. Such veterans as Norm Corcoran and Lou Jankowski were told before training camp that they would be sent elsewhere. Frank Sullivan, captain of last year’s team, and Sam Bettio, a four-year Buffalo vet like Sully, were sent to Springfield during the training sessions. Two other familiar faces. Center Bobby Hassard and Left Winger Pete Conacher, announced their retirement. Only four Buffalo-owned players—Defenseman Frank Martin. Right Winger Wally Hergesheimer, Center Larry Wilson, and left Winger Dick Gamble—were still on the Herd’s roster as the Oct. 8th opening game with Rochester neared.” Hawk Send Dineen Help—in quantity…

“Kids Better Than Vets We Cast Aside”, Says Patrick

NEW YORK, N.Y— Five big league Rangers rookies have received “the law.” It says they must score at least 52 goals or they will find themselves veterans… in the minor leagues. “The law” comes from the supreme Rangers court, presided over by no less a jurist than Phi! “You Can Call Him Braneis” Watson. When Phil makes a law, you can bet your last pfenning it will be enforced because all he has to do is go to his boss. Muzz Patrick, and get a batch of injunctions, Which Muzz usually gives at Phil’s request. So, it behooves Les Colwill, Eddie Shack, Earl Ingar-field, John Hanna and Jim Bartlett to fulfill their obligation to the Rangers if they have any designs on staying in Manhattan. If you’re thinking that Watson is being a big arbitrary…

Ivan Beats Braves ’ Tom-Tom--Promises Heap Big Noise ‘If’

Toronto Star Building The Injuns Into Contenders ST. CATHARINES, Ont.— It takes a genius to find something good in the National Hockey League performance figures for the 1957-58 Chicago Black Hawks. This makes general manager Tommy Ivan a genius because he can cite you statistics which prove Hawks were frustratingly close ’ to being a contending team, even though they finished 14 points out of fourth place “We lost 16 games by one goal,” says Tom. “To me that suggest we wore nearly good enough. We must be moving in the right direction,” If you concede that the acquisition of defenceman Jack Evans, Al Arbour and Dollard St. Laurent, and of forwards Tod Sloan and Earl Balfour will strengthen the Hawks just a bit, then you have to admit they should increase their ’57-’53 output of…
