National Senior And Junior Champions

<div class="byline">By ROGER BARRY</div><p>BOSTON, Mass.&mdash;</p><p>Ordinarily after a line sets an array of scoring records as Bronco Horvath, Vic Stasiuk and Johnny Bucyk did for the Boston Bruins this season the coach is willing to let well enough alone.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-01309/1707564-1-eng-US/f0002-012.jpg" title="f0002-01" width="288" height="432"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Norm Johnson</b></figcaption></div><p>But that is not the case with Bronco and his Busters.</p><p>When the Bruins begin their training for next season in milt September Coach Mi1t Schmidt will rearrange the line which provided him with 72 goals this season.</p><p>Bucky, the 22-year-old left wing, will move to a new assignment on right wing.</p><p>Stasiuk, the 28-year-old right wing, will go back to the left wing position he played with notable success for two years.</p><p>Horvath, the snapshooting 22-year-old center, will retain his customary role.</p><p>Horvath scored 30 goals, Stasiuk and Bucyk 21 goals each in their full season as a line, so Schmidt isn&rsquo;t thinking of switching the wings because of lack of efficiency. He thinks he&rsquo;ll gain more by making the switches.</p><p>&ldquo;Primarily the move is designed to help Stasiuk,&rdquo; explained the Bruins&rsquo; coach. &ldquo;Vic gave light wing a big try and he did a fine job there for me, but toward the end of the year he was having trouble in scoring.</p><p>&ldquo;I feel he&rsquo;ll be better off at left wing, and I also feel that Bucyk will be better off at right wing. Johnny isn&rsquo;t a lane skater, and I think his style of play will give him better scoring opportunities from the other side of the ice.&rdquo;</p><p>Schmidt actually tried swapping Stasiuk and Bucyk late this season in a game in Montreal and big Vic bagged a goal the first time he was on the ice. But the swap was short-lived.</p><p>&ldquo;We talked things over after the game and decided the line&rsquo;s over-all effectiveness would be lessened if we switched at that time,&rdquo; revealed Stasiuk.</p><p>&ldquo;I wouldn&rsquo;t have had any trouble getting adjusted to left wing but it would have been harder for Johnny. He has never played on the right side.</p><p>&ldquo;We decided the team would be better off is we waited until we start training next fall. Then we can work out the kinks before the season starts.</p><h2><b>Six 20-Goal Scorers</b></h2><p>Unless Schmidt changes his plans he&rsquo;ll have two set lines manned entirely by 20-goal scorers on which to build his offense next season. The Bruins finished up this Spring with another line of Fleming Mackell (20 goals) at Center, Don McKenney (28 goals) at left wing and Jerry Toppazzini (25 goals) at right wing. Regan is versatile, Boone aggressive and LaBine must have some good breaks ahead. Lively Leo, a veritable lamb for most of the year, played at his old lion&rsquo;s pace in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but he couldn&rsquo;t shake a year-long scoring slump. He is a great competitor, however, and he will be given a full opportunity to rebound to his former prominence in the fall.</p><p>Farmhands who may make strong bids for varsity forward jobs include Bob Beckett (6-0, 202), Larry Leach (6-2, 185), Jack Caffery (6-1, 182) and Willie O&rsquo;Ree (5-9, 170), of the Quebec Aces and Billy Forhan (5-7, 143) and Pete Panagabko (5-9, 178) of the junior Barrie (Ont.) Flyers. Tireless Eddie Panagabko (5-9, 170) of the Hershey Bears may also get a crack at a utility role.</p><p>Schmidt started the season with seven defensemen and finished it with five. The five consisted of the veterans Capt. Ferny Flaman, Allan Stanley, Doug Mohns and Leo Boivin and young Larry Hillman. Bob Armstrong played the last part of the season with Springfield, where he was far and away the best defenseman in the Amertcah league. It is likely that the 195-pounder will be back here in the fall. Jack Bionda, one of the early season seven, may also he back. Other potential defense candidates include Hillmaul&rsquo;s older brother Bud. who played with Quebec; Barry Ashbee, the high scoring firebrand from the Lakeshore (Toronto) junior Bruins, and Dick Cherry of Springfield.</p><p>The Bruins have no goaltending problems now that they have Harry Lumley as insurance behind the brilliant Don Simmons.</p><p>Schmidt has several organizational wrinkles which must be ironed out by next season.</p><p>The Bruins need a better power play than they&rsquo;ve been able to present in the past. Last season they had stretches of many games when they failed to score while other teams were short-handed. They improved greatly in that respect in the playoffs, outscoring New York&rsquo;s power play by eight goals to four and Montreal&rsquo;s by five goals to three.</p><p>The Bruins also need penaltykilling support for Mackell and Toppazzini, undoubtedly the most competent specialists in the league but not getting any younger. Last season in games in Toronto, the only place where playing times are recorded, Mackell played more than any other Bruins&rsquo; forward and Toppazzini was next. They were probably as busy elsewhere. Both showed signs of wear, and tear from the double duty. The Bruins have other capable penalty-killers available as support for the two wizards, and Johnson and LaBine are among those qualified.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Milt Plans To Beef Up Attack By Switching Over ‘Uke’ Wings

<p class="dropcap"><span>B</span>OSTON, Mass. &mdash; Jerry Toppazzini of the Bruins and Maurice Richard of the Montreal Canadiens were honored here on May 18 at the annual awards dinner of Boston Sports Lodge of B&rsquo;nai B&rsquo;rith.</p><p>Toppazzini, who made a remarkable comeback this season after a serious injury and Richard, the greatest scorer and money player in hockey history, received plaques for their outstanding contribution to hockey.</p><p>Richard, oldest of a hockey-playing family, was flanked on the dais by his brother Henri, with whom he plays on the Canadiens and Claude, who may be playing with him next year.</p><p>Toppazzini had Bruins&rsquo; Coach Milt Schmidt, Capt. Ferny Flaman and his penalty-killing partner and linemate Fleming Mackell for company.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Rocket, Topper Honored For Contributions To Ice Game

Ice Chatter In The South

<div class="byline">By STAN FISCHLER</div><p>NEW YORK, N.Y.&mdash;</p><p>Andy Bathgate, the Ranger who achieved super-star status this past season, says there&rsquo;s another Bathgate in the minors who may be better than he.</p><p>In an exclusive Hockey News interview, Andy Bathgate urged the New York management to consider his 28-year old brother, Frank, for a Blueshirt tryout in the Fall.</p><p>Andy disclosed that Frank is &ldquo;good enough&rdquo; to play on a line with him and indicated that the elder Bathgate would pass the tryout test.</p><p>At six-foot. 170 pounds Frank can play center or either wing. Last season he was with the Windsor Bulldogs of the OHA Senior A loop.</p><p>&ldquo;He&rsquo;s fast smart, strong and, most of all, hungry,&rdquo; Andy confided to the reporter.</p><p>Ironically. Andy and Frank had their initial Ranger tryouts in 1952-53 &hellip; at different times during tlve season &hellip; and both were flops.</p><p>Promoted from Shawinigan Falls of the Quebec loop, Frank played two games and drew two minutes in penalties whereupon he was shipped back to the minors. However, this observer recalls that he did not look out of place in big league company.</p><p>Andy played 18 games with Rangers that semester and collected a &ldquo;fat&rdquo; one assist &hellip; and six penalty minutes.</p><p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s too bad we couldn&rsquo;t play together then,&rdquo; Andy said, &ldquo;because things might have turned out differently. I&rsquo;ve always wanted to play on a line with my brother and, to this day, I think we could make a go of it.&rdquo;</p><p>Andy was asked why, if he&rsquo;s got the ability, Frank wasn&rsquo;t upped by an NHL team.</p><p>&ldquo;He used to kid around a lot,&rdquo; was the explanation. &ldquo;He didn&rsquo;t take the game seriously. Now, Frank has a family and he&rsquo;s buckling down.</p><p>Has Andy ever mentioned the possibility of a tryout for Frank to Muzz Patrick, the Ranger g.m?</p><p>&ldquo;No. I thought about it many times but you know how it is. I just didn&rsquo;t feel like going to Muzz &mdash; bitt I&rsquo;d like to see it happen.&rdquo;</p><p>If nothing else, the union of the two Bathgites would be a financial success in the Gotham which has seen the Cook and Colville brothers, among the best duets in hockey.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0002-06107/1707650-1-eng-US/f0002-062.jpg" title="f0002-06" width="522" height="843"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>Family Man</b></p><p><b>Andy Bathgate</b></p></figcaption></div><p>At this writing Andy is slated to be reunited with Larry Popein and Dean Prentice by coach Phil Watson. However, Popein sloughed off in the latter stages of last season and it&rsquo;s not incomprehensible that Frank Bathgate would fit in just as well at center.</p><p>It took Andy four years to become a star in the NHL after bis promotion from the Guelph junior Biltmores.</p><p>&ldquo;I never wanted to make the jump in the first place,&rdquo; he admitted. &ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t help it though. The club (Rangers) were in desperate shape and Frank Boucher needed me.</p><p>&ldquo;I talked to Frank for more than an hour when he called mo to New York</p><p>&ldquo;I told him I didn&rsquo;t think I was ready. He said there was no one else around so he had to take me. But it was too soon.</p><p>&ldquo;It only goes to prove what I tell a lot of people. It&rsquo;s no good to push a kid into the big leagues front junior hockey. The jump is too big.</p><p>&ldquo;The only kids that can do it are the real, good, fast skaters. For Bobby Hull, Frank Mahovlich and the Pocket it&rsquo;s okay, but for the others it&rsquo;s too much.</p><p>&ldquo;I know I didn&rsquo;t find myself until I spent a few seasons the minors.</p><p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s been my brother Frank&rsquo;s experience and I think he may he ready now.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Give Big Brother Frank Garden Bout, Andy Asks Rangers

<div class="byline">By MILT DUNNELL</div><div class="image-hero"><img title="f0003-01" src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0003-01308/1707681-1-eng-US/f0003-012.jpg"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b><i>Can&rsquo;t Pull The Wool Over His Eyes</i></b></figcaption></div><p>Toronto Star</p><p><b>Toronto Scribe Says Moore Had Best Claim Amongst Habs For Consideration</b></p><p>TORONTO, Ont.&mdash;</p><p><b>J</b>ACK ADAMS, who cannot be called a completely unbiased and impartial witness, once said of Gordie Howe, one of his employees &ldquo;He&rsquo;s great because he&rsquo;s big &hellip; because he&rsquo;s the best stickhandler in the game today &hellip; because he shoots with either hand &hellip; because he&rsquo;s aggressive, so no one person rides him off a play &hellip; because he&rsquo;s one of bhe surest skaters on ice. There have been little players who could do some of those things, but here&rsquo;s a big guy who can do everything.&rdquo;</p><p>As supreme commander of the Detroit Red Wings, Adams had reason to be thankful he had Howe on his side during the era of the Redbird monopoly. That&rsquo;s when Detroit grabbed eight NHL ohampionships in nine seasons. There&rsquo;s even greater cause for thanksgiving now, with the mighty Detroit machine wearing and wasting. Without Howe at right wing in the season just finished, the Red Wings might have wound up somewhere south of Toronto Maple Leafs. And that&rsquo;s really bottom, brethren.</p><p>The committee of selectors and defenders (alter it selects them, it has to defend them) must have had that in mind when it hailed Howe as repeat winner of the Hart Trophy, most coveted individual cup in shinny. Gordie&rsquo;s selection, as announced, is likely to bring some howls of protest from Montreal, where they have a team called Les Canadiens.</p><p>It&rsquo;s not hard to make out a case against the selection of Howe. He didn&rsquo;t lead the league in scoring, as he has done on five previous occasions. Dickie Moore, Henri Richard and Andy Bathgate all finished in front of him. His 33 goals were below par for him&mdash;11 fewer than in the proceeding season.</p><p>Leading the league in any department isn&rsquo;t a &ldquo;must&rdquo; for a Hart Trophy candidate &mdash; although it doesn&rsquo;t hurt his chances usually. The Hart is for the player adjudged to be most valuable to his team. On that basis, there&rsquo;s no question as to whether Howe qualifies. Without him could Wings have finished in the playoffs? They wouldn&rsquo;t have been close. That must have been the reasoning et the electors.</p><p>The same yardstick wouldn&rsquo;t fit any member of Les Habs. Nothing short of an earthquake could have shaken them off five gravy train.</p><h2><b>Moore Had Best Claim</b></h2><p><b>O</b>F all the beaten candidates, Dickie Moore was entitled to the greatest consideration. He won the scoring title with one hand. The other was encased in plaster. When Rocket Richard was hurt, Moore moved to his wrong wing, thereby risking his chances of catching a spot on the all-star team. He kept right on scoring. Of all the players who had a part in La Cakewalk of Les Canadiens, Moore probably was the most important. But who would say the Habs had to finish up the track if they didn&rsquo;t have him? Why the pickers gave him only four votes still must be the mystery of the century.</p><p>Howe&rsquo;s selection won&rsquo;t go down so well with the Rocket Richard rooting and toot-tooting club, either. The big Redbird may run out of time before he overtakes the Rocket in goalscoring, mainly because Maurice isn&rsquo;t through yet. If his Achilles tendon hadn&rsquo;t been sliced, he might have realized his lifelong embition of leading the league in scoring last season.</p><p>But if Howe has a discouraging assignment in chasing the Rocket for goals. Richard&rsquo;s position is completely hopeless in the matter of Hart trophies and scoring championships. Howe is a four-time winner of the Hart now. Richard has had it once. Howe has been scoring leader five times. The Rocket never has finished on top. He blew the title&mdash;and probably the Hart as well&mdash;the year he got himself suspended in the home stretch.</p><p>There are other ways of comparing the two great right-wing rivals. For color and drama you&rsquo;d have to take Richard by farther than you&rsquo;d shoot a Sputnik. There never was a man in hockey who was better for the box office.</p><p>Because of his injury, Richard didn&rsquo;t figure this year as a Hart contender. He could have been cosidered if playoff games entered into the qualifications for office. The night Rocket scored his overtime goal in the fifth game of the Stanley Cup gambols he shot the legs from under the Bruins. They never recovered from that shocker.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Same Old Story: Howe Hart Of Wings

<p class="dropcap"><span>T</span>ORONTO, Ont. &mdash; Maurice Richard told an audience of about 750 people at the annual awards night at St. Michael&rsquo;s College that Gordie Howe is the finest player in the game today.</p><p>Richard said he would pick Howe as the finest and also place him on his all-opponents tea m.</p><p>The Rocket told the group that the toughest player he ever faced was &ldquo;Wild Bill&rdquo; Ezinicki and the finest goaler Frankie Brimsek. &ldquo;I&rsquo;d get 10 or 12 shots on Brimsek every game and there were some nights I&rsquo;d only get one or two goals,&rdquo; lie said.</p><p>Richard picked his all-time dream team. It had Terry Sawchuk in goal, with Jack Stewart and Red Kelly on defense and Howe at right with Lindsay at left and Milt Schmidt at centre.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Richard Names Howe Best In National League Today

This marks the second year in a row that the All-Star right winger has captured this award and the fourth time in his outstanding NHL career.</p><p>Howe polled 105 points out of a possible 180 in winning the trophy which is presented annually to &ldquo;the player adjudged to be most valuable to his team.&rdquo; Andy Bathgate, right winger star of the new York Rangers, finished second in the voting with 70 points, while Montreal Canadiens&rsquo; defenseman Doug Harvey finished third Harvey polled 41 points.</p><p>A total of 17 players received one or more points in balloting for the Hart Trophy, which is considered the outstanding individual trophy awarded by the National Hockey League. Players to receive one or more points, other than Howe, Bathgate and Harvey were: Henri Richard, Canadiens, 40; Glenn Hall, Chicago, 37; Bill Gadsby, Rangers, 9; Camille Henry, Rangers, 6; Dickie Moore, Canadiens, 4; Fleming Mackell, Boston, 3; Jerry Toppazzini, Boston, 1; Terry Sawchuk, Detroit, 1; Don Mc Kenney, Boston, 1; Ron Stewart, Toronto, 1; Tom Johnson, Canadiens, 1; Lorne Worsley, Rangers, 1; and Eddie Litzenberger, Chicago, 1.</p><p>By winning the Hart Trophy for a fourth time. Howetied the record set by Eddie Shore, former defense star with the Boston Bruins. Shore had been the only player in history to win this coveted trophy four times. Howie Morenz won it three times. Outside of Howe, Shore and Morenz no other player has been able to win the Hart Trophy more than twice.</p><p>The 30-year-old Howe has had a phenomenal career during his 12 seasons with the Red Wings. Besides winning four Hart Trophies, lie has won the Art Ross Trophy as the National Hockey League&rsquo;s leading scorer on five occasions, and has been named to right wing on the First All-Star Team six times and on the Second Team three times.</p><p>He received $1,000 from the NHL for being named to right wing on the First-All-Star Team for 1957-58 and also another $1,000 for winning the Hart Trophy. Winners of all NHL individual achievement trophies are the recipients of $1,000, from the League.</p><p>Howe was born at Floral. Sask, on March 31, 1928. He stands an even six-feet and weighs 195 pounds. He possesses one of the strongest physiques in the NHL. Howe has a hard shot and fires the puck from either the right or left side. He plays right wing and is a right-hand shot most of the time. However lie is completely ambidextrous and often propels the puck as a left-hand shot.</p><p>He scored 33 goals and collected 44 assists during the 1957-58 season. His 77 scoring points placed him in fourth place among the NHL leading point getters. Dickie Moore of Canadiens with 36 goals was the only player to score more goals this, season than Howe. Only once in the last nine seasons has he scored under 30 goals, and that time he scored 29. In 1949-50 he scored 35, in&rsquo; 50-51 he scored 43,&rsquo; 51-52, 47 goals;&rsquo; 52-53, 49 goals;&rsquo; 5854 33 goals;&rsquo; 54-55, 29 goals,&rsquo; 55-56, 38 goals;&rsquo; 56-57, 45 goals.</p><p>Bathgate, who finished in second place in the voting this year, has moved up a notch. Last year he finished in third place. The up-and-coming right wingman polled 51 points last year, while this year be polled 70 points. He also had an outstanding season and was named to the right wing post on the Second All-Star Team.</p><p>How and Bathgate were the Hart Trophy leaders at the half-way mark of the 1957-58 season At that time Howe polled 47 points to Bathgate&rsquo;s 27. Gord Takes 105 Of Possible 180 Points, Andy 2nd With 70

This marks the fourth consecutive year that Montreal&rsquo;s great defenseman has captured this trophy and the accompanying $1,000 from the National Hockey League.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0004-06153/1707833-1-eng-US/f0004-062.jpg" title="f0004-06" width="287" height="427"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Doug Harvey</b></figcaption></div><p>Harvey polled 153 points out of a possible 180 in winning the trophy which is presented annually to &ldquo;the regular defense player who demonstrates throng hout the season the greatest a11-round ability in that position. Runner-up to Harvey in the voting was Bill Gadsbv of the New York Rangers. Gadsby polled 119 points. Fern Flaman veteran captain of the Boston Bruins, was third with 17 points.</p><p>Voting for the James Norris I Memorial Trophy was carried out by a panel of hockey writers, broadcasters and telecasters from the six National Hockey League cities. Like the voting for all the trophies, points were awarded on the basis of five points for a first choice, three for a second and one for a third. The voting was divided into two halves. The first half consisted of games up to and including those of December 29. 1957. The second half comprised all games after that.</p><p>The most points a player could compile for any one halt was 90. Harvey compiled 7 5 for the first half and 78 for the second half. Gadsby was the only other defenseman who was even anywhere close to Harvey in the voting. Big Bill polled 55 points during the first half and 64 points in the second half.</p><p>Other defensemen to garner one or more points besides Harvey, Gadsby and Flaman were: Ron Stewart., Toronto, 13; Marcel Pronovost, Detroit, 7; Red Kelly, Detroit, 3; Tom Johnson. Canadiens, 3; Dollard St. Laurent, Canadiens, 2; Pierre Pilote, Chicago, 2; Leo Boivin, Boston, 2; Jean Guy Talbot, Canadiens 1; Jim Morrison. Toronto, 1; and Doug Mohns, Boston.</p><p>The James Norris Memorial Trophy, newest of the N.H.L. trophies, has been presented for five years and Doug Harvey has won the trophy four of the five years. Harvey has also been named to a defense position on the First All-Star Team for the past seven year. He is establishing a fabulous record for a National Hockey League defenseman.</p><p>Bill Gadsby was I he highest-scoring defenseman in the NHL during the 1957-58 season. He had 14 goals and 32 assists for 46 points. Gadsby, along with Harvey, stood out among the defensemen in the circuit, and the talented New York Ranger rearguard was named to the First All-Star Team to partner Harvey. Harvey was a unanimous choice, for the All-Star. Team with 180 points. Gadsby wasn&rsquo;t far behind with 168 points.</p><p>Harvey scored nine goals and assisted on 32 others for 41 points during the regular schedule. Born in Montreal on December 19, 1924, the 5&rsquo;11&rdquo;, 180-pound defenseman has just completed his llth season with Canadiens. During that time he has built up an enviable reputation as one of the all-time greats of the game.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Despite this deference in his own league, Junzo is determined to develop inter-continental relations with Canadians, who have been known to parlay a clout and a curtsy in paying their respects to a whistle-blower. Junzo wants to bring a Japanese hockey team here, en route to Squaw Valley, Cal. for the 1960 winter Olympics. He also would welcome another visit by a Canadian club to his homeland. Junzo is a big wheel in Japanese shinny&mdash;a referee for 25 years, and head man of the rules committee.</p><p>&ldquo;Some Europeans say Canadians too much rough but I think no.&rdquo; Junzo reported. He was here as an observer at the annual huddle of the Canadian Amateur Hockey association: &ldquo;Canadians almost same cleans as Japanese hockey players,&rdquo; he insisted.</p><p>He developed he had seen a junior game in which neither side had thrown a punch and no person had questioned a ruling of the officials. Junzo regarded that as wonderful. No one had bothered to tell him it also was very unusual.</p><p>He also had witnessed a match between Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers, as a ringside guest of CA HA patriarch, W. A. Hewitt, This one was not as much clean.&rdquo; he conceded, but was very exciting. It had enabled him to test his skills as a referee. Whenever there was a stoppage of play, he would tell Mr. Hewitt why there had been a whistle. Then they would wait for the official ruling.</p><p>&ldquo;He called every penalty correctly.&rdquo; Mr. Hewitt praised. &ldquo;This man is a good referee. He could work in almost any company. His knowledge of the game amazed me.</p><p>Junzo, unfortunately, has been spoiled. While he never actually encountered a Japanese player who argued with a referee, he did recall one or two, in the early days, who wanted to &ldquo;discuss&rdquo; a referee&rsquo;s ruling. Those &ldquo;discussers&rdquo; had been discouraged. There are none now.</p><h2><b><i>It Was An Import From Canada</i></b></h2><p><b>H</b>OW would a game like hockey get a skatehold in Japan? According to Junzo, the invasion took place some 40 years ago. The mayor of Yokohama at the time was a great sports enthusiast who was engaged in trade and commerce with Canada. Some barbarian at this end sent him some shinny gear. When the sticks broke, the Japanese carried on with bandy clubs. These probably came from Scandinavia, since the Japanese never had played bandy.</p><p>Now, there are about 15 artificial ice rinks in the country, according to Junzo&rsquo;s count. All are open air plants, the largest of which can accommodate approximately 7,000 spectators. Many Japanese line up outside, in the hope of gaining admittance. One of the high spots in Japanese hockey history was a win for the home side over a team from a Canadian warship on a good-will cruise to the Orient. The Japanese didn&rsquo;t question the calibre of the visiting team. It came from Canada, didn&rsquo;t it:</p><p>Eventually, hockey will be as popular as baseball in Japan. That&rsquo;s Junzo&rsquo;s opinion&mdash;-probably an overly optimistic one, since he&rsquo;s a confessed hockey fanatic himself. His connection with the games goes back to the days of the seventh man&mdash;the rover.</p><p>Practically all of the equipment, comes from Canada. In Japan, everyone knows the word &ldquo;Singer&rdquo; means sewing machine, Junzo explained. In the same way, the letters &ldquo;CCM&rdquo; mean skates.</p><p>&ldquo;And please don&rsquo;t think I sell them,&rdquo; he added hastily. &ldquo;In Japan, I am a manufacturer of pottery but when season start, all my friends say my only business is hockey.&rdquo;<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Que.&mdash;</p><p>Forty-five more goals were scored by National Hockey League players in 1957-58 than in 1956-57. In the season just ended a total of 1175 goals were rapped in by 109 players who scored one or more times during the year. In 195657 a total of 113 0 goals were scored. Most of those extra goals came off the sticks of players from Canadiens. This season the Habs scored 2 50 goals, which totals 4 0 more than the season before. Other clubs who upped their goal output were New York with 11 more, Toronto with 18 more and Boston with four more. Detroit scored 22 less times in 1957-58 than they did in 1956-57. Likewise Chicago scored six less.</p><p>A total of 158 players, including 14 goalers played in regular NHL games last season.</p><p>Only two regulars, who performed in 5ft or more games failed to score a goal. Both are defensemen. They are Fern Flaman of the Bruins and Bob Turner of the Canadiens. Both played in 66 games. Boston defenseman Leo Boivin also failed to scored while playing in 33 games. Gorden Strate. traded by the Wings to Cleveland after 45 games failed to net the puck once.</p><p>Four played three games or less and managed to hit the score sheet. Con sir Broden, after playing with the Whitby Duniops in the world tournament then joined the Canadiens and in three games scored two goals. Murray Balfour also played three games with the Habs on loan from the Montreal Royals of the Quebec League. He scored once. Bill McCreary, in three games with the Wings scored a single while Jet ry Edman of the Springfield Indians of the American League scored a goal in his first game in the National League. Playing with the Boston Bruins. Jerry scared a goal and then returned to Springfield.</p><p>In the penalty department players in the NHL spent 83 and one third games in the Coop. A total of exactly 5906 minutes was dished out in penalties by NHL referees in 1957-58. The season before only 4912 minutes were spent in the sin-bin. In minutes, players spent a total of 88 more for major and minor infractions this season than in the year previous,</p><p>Seven players spent 100 or more minutes in the penalty box. Led by Lou Fontinato of the Rangers with 152, the other six are Kennedy of Detroit with 135, Harvey, Montreal, 131, Lindsay. Chicago, lift. Goals Scored Upped 45, P1M 88 More Than ’57

The 1957-58 winner is tiny Camille Henry.</p><p>Last year&rsquo;s winner was Andy Hebenton, hardworking Ranger right winger. Henry, the prolific-scoring left wing of the New&rsquo; York Rangers, was also named to the left wing position on the Second All-Star Team this year.</p><p>In winning the trophy which is presented annually to &ldquo;the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability during the season &rdquo;, Henry polled 135 points. Dounie Marshall of Montreal Canadiens finished second in the balloting with 48 points. Third place went to Boston Bruins&rsquo; Don McKenney, who polled 21 points.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0005-03233/1707971-1-eng-US/f0005-032.jpg" title="f0005-03" width="266" height="421"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Camille Henry</b></figcaption></div><p>The voting was conducted by a panel of hockey writers, broadcasters and telecasters and the season was divided into two halves. Toronto, 1.</p><p>Henry and Marshall placed one-two in the balloting at the half-way mark of the 1957-58 season, too. Henry polled 52 points at that time while Marshall collected 23. Henry had a big second half with 83 points out of a perfect 90. Marshall had 25 points in the second half.</p><p>The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy is the second National Hockey League trophy to come Henry&rsquo;s way since he came into the League at the start of the 1953-54 season. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the National HockeyLeague&rsquo;s outstanding rookie that year. Always an exceptionally fine goal scorer, Camille really found himself in. 1.957-58.</p><p>He was the leading New York goal-getter with 32 goals, and topped all the players in the League for most of the season in this department. He finished the regular schedule with 32 goals, 24 assists, 56 points.</p><p>His name is the 11th from live top in the individual scoring parade. He was the second, highest point-getter among the Rangers.</p><p>The 1957-58 season has been a great one for &ldquo;Camille the Eel&rdquo; as he was nicknamed by sportswriters as a result of his elusiveness around the opposition&rsquo;s goat. Besides winning the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy and the $1,060; from the N.H.L. that goes with it, lie also was selected to the left wing position on the Second All-Star Team for which he received $500. Camille also received a $500 bonus from the New York Rangers when lie scored his 25th goal this season.</p><p>A particularly clean player, Henry spent two minutes in the penalty box this season. The most minutes he spent in the penaly box since he turned professional with the Rangers in 1953 was during his first season, 1953-54, when he spent 1ft minutes in the box.&rsquo;</p><p>Henry was born at Quebec City, Que. on January 31, 1933. One of the smallest players in the N.H.L. ne Stands 5&rsquo;9&rdquo; iu height and weighs a shade under 15b pounds. He was ont of Canada&rsquo;s outstanding junior players with Quebec Citadels before turing pro with the Rangers, ft doesn&rsquo;t seem to matter with what team lie is on or in what league that Henry plays in lie is always able to score plenty of goals. He has a bard accurate shot, and seems to possess uncanny ability at flicking the puck into the net. He is very alert and clever around the goal and has an inherent knack of being in the right place at the right time. There are few better players at finishing off a play than Camilla.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Camille Henry, First In Good Behaviour, First In Byng Race

Stanley Cup finalists had six in their lineup, while Canadiens had five. Rangers, Toronto and Detroit three each and Chicago two.</p><p>The swelling to 22 from tire previous seasons&rsquo; 13 made the 1957-58 club one of the largest in history. Twelve of the 22 were either entering the club for the first time or had missed it the previous season. Ten are returnees from the 1956-57 season while Three from the 1956-57 season failed to make it. Two of those failed for the first time in many years. They are Maurice Richard and Ted Lindsay of Chicago. Also missing was Chevrefils of Boston.</p><p>Both Lindsay and Richard scored 15 goals this season. However, Maurice missed most of the season and almost certainly would have made it had he played more games. For Lindsay it was one of his worst seasons since stepping into the NHL.</p><p>In 1956-57 Richard scored 33 goals, Lindsay 30 and Clievrefils netted 21. All three made either the first or second all-star teams that season.</p><p>Leading the goal scorers was Dickie Moore of the Canadiens with 36. The previous year be scored 29. Other 30 or more goal scorers were Howe of Detroit with 33, Litzenberger of Chicago and Henry of New York with 32 and Bronco Horvath of Boston and Andy Bathgate of New York, each with 30. Neither Horvath or Henry made the 20 goal club last season. Mahovlich held a commanding lead over Hull at the half-way mark in the voting&rsquo; The tall Totonto forward had 82 points opt Of a possible 90 for the first&rsquo; half while Hull earned 39 points. Hull pulled most of the votes in the second half. He polled 77 points out of 90, while Mahovlich polled 38. However, his first half total gave Mahovlich enough points-to beat out the youthful Chicago center.</p><p>Phil Goyette picked up 42 points in the second half, but only had a single point, for the first half. Voting was conducted into two halves &mdash; games up to and including those of December 2.9, 1957 made up the first half, while games after that date comprised the second half. A unanimous selection would poll 90 points for each half.</p><p>Hockey writers, broadcasters and telecasters from the six N.H.L. cities did the voting, and points were awarded on the basis of five for a first choice, three for a second and one for a third.</p><p>The 20-yeat-old Mahovlich is the sixth member of the Toronto Maple Leafs to be picked as the outstanding rookie in the National Hockey League. Other Torouto players to be so honored were Howie Meeker in 194647; Frank McCool, 19 44-4 5; Gus Bodnar. 1943-44; Gaye Stewart, 1942-43; and Svl Apps. 1936-37.</p><p>Born at Schumacher. Ont. on January 10, 1938, the six-foot, one inch, 195-pound Mahovlich was a standout junior with Toronto St. Michael&rsquo;s a year ago. He scored 52 goals and had 35 assists for 87 points with St. Mike&rsquo;s and was rated one of the best pro prospect to ever perform, in the O.H.A. Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; League. Frank managed to get into three games with the Leafs towards the end of last season. He scored one goal during that time. This season in the National Hockey League Mahovlich scored 20 goals and assisted on 16 others for 36 points.</p><p>Bobby Hull is also a. graduate of the O.H.A. Junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; League. Last season Bobby played with St. Catherines TeePees. The first N.H.L. game he ever participated in was the opening game of the 1957-58 season in Chicago. He was a smash hit right from the start. He played in all 70 games for the Black Hawks this season and was the second highest point-getter on the club. He scored 13 goals and picked up 34 assists for 47 points. Eddie Litzenberger with 32 goals and 30 assists was the only Chicago player to top Hull.</p><p>Hull was born at Port Anne, Ont. on January 3, 1939. He was the youngest player in the N.H.L. this past season. He was only 18 when the season started. An all-around athlete who was one of the outstanding high school football players in Ontario, Hull stands five-feet, 10 inches and weighs a solid 195 pounds. He looks and is built a lot like I Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Calder Cup Playoffs Results And Scoring

N.Y.&mdash;</p><p>Bill Sweeney, twenty one year old center of the Providence Reds was voted the outstanding rookie of the American Hockey League for 1957-58, a selection which gives him a league bonus of $300.00, and the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Trophy. Being chosen as the best of the first year players this season was a particular distinction, as the latest crop of rookie players has been judged the best to enter the AHL in many years.</p><p>In winning his award Sweeney compiled 22 out of a possible 30 points, based on 5 points for a first choice, three for second and one for third. The press, radio and TV representatives of the six AHL cities gave him two first place votes and four ballots for second, as be gained recognition in all cities.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0007-04187/1708189-1-eng-US/f0007-042.jpg" title="f0007-04" width="492" height="1209"><figcaption class="caption-body"><p><b>First In Race</b></p><p><b>Bill Sweeney</b></p></figcaption></div><p>Sweeney&rsquo;s closest rival for the honors was Len Haley of Hershey who had 14 points on two selections for first, one for second and one for third. The other two first place votes went to Eddie Shack, Sweeney&rsquo;s teammate, which gave him 10 points and the third place nomination. Other rookies to receive votes were Skippy Burchell of Rochester and Bruce Carmichael of Providence with 3 points each, and Stan Smrke of Rochester and Larry Leach of Springfield with a single point for each.</p><p>Sweeney is the second Providence player to be awarded the most proficient rookie title, as Bruce Cline was given similar honors in 1955-56. Both Sweeney and Cline are the property of the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League. It is significant, that of the seven rookies given votes this past season, three of them Sweeney, Shack and Carmichael, are all members of the Ranger organization. Dudley (Red) Garrett, for whom the rookie trophy was named, was also a member of the Rangers before leaving hockey for service in the Canadian Navy in World War II, in which he was killed in action</p><p>In gaining his honors, Sweeney was in the scoring limelight all season and finished up with 77 points on 31 goals and 46 assists, which gave him a seventh place tie with Carmichael among the league&rsquo;s leading scorers. Sweeney probably would have compiled more scoring points if he had not lost his longtime linemate, Shack, in midseason. The pair had played together for a few years as amateurs in Guelph, in the Junior Ontario Hockey Association, and after turning professional with Provincial, they remained as a team until Shack suffered a broken leg in January, which side-lined him for the season. Both Sweeney and Shack are considered prime material to be with Rangers next season.</p><p>Sweeney played in all 70 games for Providence, plus 5 more in the post season Calder Cup Playoffs, to prove his durability. He was assessed 24 minutes in penalties during the regular season. In scoring his 31 goals, he tallied the three goal &ldquo;hat trick&rdquo; twice, and in four other games he had a pair of goals in each.</p><p>In his last season before becoming a professional, he led the Jr. OHA in scoring, for Guelph, with 106 points in the 1956-57 season. During the OHA playoffs that year he scored 19 goals extra.</p><p>All of Sweeney&rsquo;s athletic endeavors are not confined to the hockey rinks, as he is an expert golfer besides. During the summer months, he resides in Guelph, and is the &ldquo;pro&rdquo; at the Fairview Golf and Country Club, the youngest golf professional in the Province of Ontario. He shoots in the low 70&rsquo;s, and like his hockey career, he started both at a young age. When only 14 years old in 1951, he was the runner-up for the Junior Ontario golf championship.</p><p>A long and brilliant career in professional hockey ranks is predicted for Sweeney, and also for his linemate, Shack. Those in the Ranger organization are hoping that both of them will be able to stay together in their upward progress, as one seems to have a definite influence over the other, in their playing ability.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Y. &mdash;</p><p>The league and Calder Cup Champions, the Hershey Bears, and the regular season runner - up. the Cleveland Barons, each placed two players on the American Hockey League first All Star Team for 1957-58. Providence and Springfield were each represented by one of the other two players to round out the six man team. Goaltender Johnny Bower and defenseman Steve Kraftcheck were the Cleveland stars to be voted on the select squad, while Hershey&rsquo;s pair of high scoring forwards. Willie Marshall at center and Dune Fisher on rightwing were the pair of Hershey representatives. Defenseman Ivan Irwin took the honors for Providence and leftwing Gerry Ehman gave Springfield its place on the top team.</p><p>Cleveland and Hershey each had two members on the second team also, as did Rochester, with Springfield having a single candidate. There were seven members on the second team, as a tie for the goaltendiug position existed between Bobby Perreault of Hershey and Gerry McNeil of Rochester. Playing coach Frank Mathers of Hershey and Tommy Williams of Rochester were the alternate team defensemen, while Cal Gardner of Springfield was the center; Bo Elik of Cleveland was at leftwing and his teammate, Fred Glover at rightwing. Buffalo was the only team which failed to have a player named to either the first or second teams.</p><p>With voting points from me league&rsquo;s press, radio and TV representatives being awarded on a 5-3-1 basis for a first, second and third place choice, the most points possible for any position was 39. Bower, Kraftcheck, Fisher and Ehman were all unanimous selections for their positions. with each receiving a full 30 points from a first place vote from each of the six league cities. Marshall with 5 first and a second, compiled 28 points while Irwin had 26 points on 4 top choices and 2 for second.</p><p>Each of the players on the first team will receive a league bonus of $300.00 and a gold i miniature puck, while the members of the second squad are the recipients of a $200.00 bonus] I and a silver puck.</p><p>For Bower, it is the third I consecutive year during which he has been a member of the first team, and the fifth time in his AHI. career, as be was voted to the select squad in 1951-52 and 1952-53 also. His five first team awards ties him with Mathers, who in previous years also had. that amount, his coming in consecutive seasons. This is the most times any player has been voted to the first team. Kraftcheck was a repeater from last season for his second year in a row on the first team.</p><p>Irwin and Fisher moved up from the second team last season to the first this year, and Marshall and Ehman did not make either team in the previous season. For Ehman. it was his first all star selection in the league, but Marshall bad made the first team while with Pittsburgh in 1955-56. Perreault, McNeil and Gardner of the second team this year, were honored for the first time in the AHL. for either team. Williams, Elik and Glove all were on the first team in 1956-57, dropping to the alternate aggregation this season. Mathers who had. been on five straight first teams including 1955-5G, did not make either last year, but returned to the second squad this season.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

<div class="byline">By DICK McCRONE</div><p>HERSHEY, Pa. &mdash;</p><p>The Hershey Bears engineered their second big trade with a National League club within a week by sending ace center man, Willie Marshall to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for three players.</p><p>Marshall, who paced AHL scorers this past season with 104 points, was a much sought after athlete, with three teams bidding for his services. Business Manager Aldege &ldquo;Baz&rdquo; Bastien finally consumated the Toronto deal, just 24 hours before the club&rsquo;s reserve list was frozen until after the annual draft.</p><p>The Bears receive Mike Nykoluk and Ron Hurst outright, plus rookie Walter Boyer, of the Toronto Marlboros, on a two-year loan arrangement.</p><p>Boyer, 20, who was junior &ldquo;A&rdquo; All-Star selection, potted 17 goals and registered a like number of assists. He is a center.</p><p>Nykoluk, 23, who is also a center, amassed 48 points with Rochester last season on 16 goals and 32 assists, while Hurst, 26-year-old right winger, chipped in with 12 goals and 21 assists.</p><p>Bastien is enthusiastic about the deal, pointing out that acquisition of Nykoluk and Boyer &ldquo;gives us real strength down the middle, along with Hec Lalande, who was acquired in the Dunc Fisher deal. Leafs Get Marshall Back, Send Bears Up Front Trio

<p class="dropcap"><span>B</span>OSTON, Mass. &mdash; Milt, Schmidt has joined Art Ross in coaching the Boston Bruins into the final round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in successive years.</p><p>Ross coached the Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 1929 against the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers and into a losing final with the Canadiens a year later.</p><p>The feat was unmatched until this spring when Schmidt coached a team into a losing final with Montreal for the second straight year. The Bruins beat Detroit in the semi-final round a year age, New York this year.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

Schmidt Joins Ross, Both Led Bruins In Two Finals

<div class="byline">By HOWIE NEWSTATE</div><p>CINCINNATI, O. &mdash;</p><p>In an all-day meeting in Toledo recently the International Hockey League Board of Directors looked forward to bettering themselves for the 1958-59 season.</p><p>&ldquo;True four of the six teams lost money last season, but I think if we all put our heads together we will have a good season at the gate next year,&rdquo; said Frank Gallagher, President of the circuit.</p><p>Gallagher went on to say, &ldquo;We are almost sure of having Cincinnati, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Louisville and Toledo in the league next year, but I have my doubts about the Troy franchise.&rdquo;</p><p>General Manager Ken Wilson of Troy has asked for a two week extension on his decision. Wilson stated that the Troy fronohise has lost money for the past few years and is currently looking for a backer.</p><p>Rumors had it that St. Louis (Mo.) and Columbus (O.) would enter the IHL next season but Gallagher said that he had not heard any offers trorn those cities. Two other franchise would like to enter the loop, but Gallagher did not disclose who the cities were.</p><p>In an effort to add some interest to the league, one of the Board members suggested that the International Hockey League meet the Ontario Hockey Association at the end of each season, with the two league champions meeting for a North American Championship. President Gallagher thought it would boost hockey prestige in the IH L and would look into the matter further.</p><p>It was also announced that the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States would hold its yearly meeting in Lake Placid, New York, May 30 and June 1.</p><p>In attendance at the Toledo meeting were Cincinnati-Tom Grace (President) and Howard. <div class="byline">By STAN HOUSTON</div><p>Toronto Telegram</p><p>TORONTO, Ont.&mdash;</p><p>American&rsquo; League hostility toward hockey&rsquo;s minor league draft plan was quietly subdued at the Royal York Hotel here as NHL governors and representatives prepared a new five-year joint affiliation agreement.</p><div class="figure-block image-block"><img src="/var/site_2854/storage/images/media2/images/f0011-01382/1708628-1-eng-US/f0011-012.jpg" title="f0011-01" width="289" height="403"><figcaption class="caption-body"><b>Clarence Campbell</b></figcaption></div><p>On the surface, the new draft laws are little different from those in the five-year plan which expires Aug. 31. Yet AHL representatives feel they have plugged the loopholes which have been festering through the past few draft meetings.</p><p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m going to see to it that the draft laws have teeth that will hold,&rdquo; said AHL President Richard Canning, a Providence lawyer who will collaborate with NHL President Clarence Campbell in wording the new agreement for ratification at a second meeting in Montreal.</p><p><b>&ldquo;With the loopholes plugged, we&rsquo;ll be satisfied, added Cleveland owner Jam Hendy, hiterto one of the draft system&rsquo;s severest critics.</b></p><p>Through the four-hour meeting, a report of which will be Sent to Western and Quebec League officials for approval, two other significant changes were made.</p><p>In one, the number or amateur clubs which can be sponsored by a professional team was reduced. In the other, an advisory board of professional league presidents was established to deal with inter-league disputes.</p><h2><b>Smythe Happy</b></h2><p>Until now, professional teams were restricted only in the number of Junior A clubs they could sponsor &mdash; two to be specific. The Junior A team in turn could be affiliated with an endless number of minor clubs in other age groups &mdash; juvenile, midget, bantam, pee wee, atom, etc.</p><p><b>Henceforth, Junior A teams will be permitted to affiliate with only three other clubs. The two-team Junior A restriction will meanwhile remain in effect, thereby limiting each professional club to eight directly-sponsored amateur teams.</b></p><p>In establishing an advisory board, the meeting abolished a system whereby the NHL president was sole arbitrator.</p><h2><b>Points Resolved</b></h2><p>&ldquo;All of our points have been resolved.&rdquo; Campbell said with satisfaction after the meeting. &ldquo;The agreement will be reduced to writing in time for our next meeting in Montreal.&rdquo;</p><p><b>&ldquo;With a little give-and-take, we set hockey up with a solid front for another five years,&rdquo; concurred Leaf president Conn Smythe.</b><span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

New NHL-AHL Pact Plugs Up Loopholes In Drafting Set-Up

<div class="byline">By GEORGE METZGER</div><p>PHILADELPHIA, Pa.&mdash;</p><p>The brass of the Eastern Hockey League will decide this month just what they will do about next season.</p><p>One thing is sure! The loop will be expanded. But as to how many teams, and where they will be located are still deep, dark secrets.</p><p>Towards the close of the season, the word was out that the champion Washington Presidents would pull up stakes and head for Elizabeth or Orange in northern New Jersey.</p><p>There was also another report that a new franchise would be awarded to Raleigh, N.C.</p><p>It seems now these two rumors may be combined, sending the Presidents to Raleigh.</p><p>This is one of the things the league moguls must consider at the meeting this month. They must decide on where to move the Washington club. Another group bidding for the Raleigh franchise is one headed by Jim Rock, former owner of the Charlotte (and before that Baltimore) Clippers. He has as a partner Don Kellett, general manager of the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League here in the States.</p><p>No matter, what, there definitely will be a team in Raleigh next season. The deal will be the club will buy the ice making machinery for the Fairgrounds there with the understanding it will become the property of the arena after ten years.</p><p>Raleigh is a natural spot for ice hockey. The move to Charlotte two years ago proved the southerners were eager for the sport. And also, it is so near Charlotte, that it will be a natural for clubs to make a two-city swing through the south, instead of going all that distance just to play one team.</p><p>When Charlotte came into the league for the 1956-57 season, they did so under the agreement that they would pay transportation costs for all the visiting clubs from Washington D.C. (the then most southern point in the league) to their town. But now, it is understood, the Clippers have served notice they are done picking up the tab. Another good reason for bringing in Raleigh.</p><p>And then from New York comes word that league president Tom Lockhart&rsquo;s Rovers are finally ready to make their reappearance on the EHL scene.</p><p>They have been waiting for their rink on Long Island, 45 miles outside New York City, to be finished. It is now expected to be ready for the upcoming campaign.</p><p>Several other towns are expected to put in applications for admission, but it is doubted if any of them will be accepted at this time.</p><p>If Washington takes up a New Jersey residence, the Rock-Kellett faction takes over Raleigh and prexy Lockhart&rsquo;s Rovers finally function, it will make an eight-team league.</p><p>The loop heads have voiced the opinion that the circuit would then be split into two divisions, a northern and a southern section.</p><p>It is certain that part of the meeting will take up the question of Clinton. Although the Comets have been in hockey for a number of years, the outfit just about folded this year. In fact, it would have if the EHL did not grant it $2,000 in aid. They too could be ready to, make a move.</p><p>Something new was innovated this year in the EHL. For each admission ticket sold for a playoff game, a 25 cent levy was added for a fund for injured players.</p><p>Four men shared in this pool this year. They are Ray Crew and Art Dorrington; of the Philadelphia Ramblers; Jim McNulty, of Charlotte, and Nick Pidsodny, of Washington.</p><p>Crew suffered a serious hack injury that kept him out of action most of the year. The 6.03 defenseman underwent surgery and was off his feet for a good many months.</p><p>Dorrington broke his leg badly in a game at Clinton, shortly after returning to the ice after a two-year hitch in the Army.</p><p>McNulty, the Clipper&rsquo;s fancyskating center, was leading the league in scoring until he suffered a broken hand. He missed the last three weeks of the ampaign.</p><p>Finally, Pidsodny, Washington&rsquo;s standout goalie, missed the playoffs due to a leg injury he suffered during practice between the last regular season game and the playoff opener.</p><p>It is felt around the league that this is a &ldquo;big league&rdquo; step taken by the EHL, providing for its injured players.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>

EHL Growing Pains Spread To Raleigh, Jersey Coast And NY

N.Y.&mdash;</p><p>The Hershey Bears, winners of the American Hockey League regular season championship and the recently completed Calder Cup Playoffs, received 41 % of the total playoff pool of $58,-136.81. Thus the Hershey players will divide up $28,836.09 for their efforts in finishing the season schedule in first place and then annexing the post season Calder Cup Championship series. The playoffs pool is based on 50% of the net gate receipts from the 12 games which were necessary to decide the three playoff series, two preliminary rounds and the finals, each conducted on a best four out of seven basis.</p><p>Thirty percent of the total pool is designated for the final regular season finish of the four playoff contenders, with the remaining seventy percent for playoff performance only. Hershey&rsquo;s 41% was derived from 11% for their first place standing, 12% for winning the preliminary round and 18% for their victory in the finals. The 41% total is the most possible for any team to amass.</p><p>Springfield, which finished the regular season in fourth place, eliminated Cleveland in the semi-finals and then lost to Hershey in the title round, were the recipients of 29%. of the pool of $16,859.68. The Indians received 5% for fourth place, 12% for their opening round decision and another 12% for being in the finals and losing.</p><p>Cleveland, which completed the regular schedule in second place which was worth 8%, received a like percentage for its defeat by Springfield in the preliminary round, for a total of 16% or $9,301.89. The remaining playoff contender, Providence, received 6% for its third place regular season standing and another 8% as its share after losing to Hershey in that bracket of the preliminary series. Their 14% total amounted to $8,139.15.</p><p>The entire playoff series numbered 18 games out of a possible 21, thus the players had a financial interest in 12 out of the 18 games played. Of the 12 games in which the players shared the gate receipts, four each were played in Hershey and Springfield, and two each in Cleveland and Providence.</p><p>All of the players in the league, including those of the non-playoff contending teams, benefits out of the playoffs in the amount Buffalo and Rochester, received additional of $24,985.50. This sum is placed in the American Hockey League Insurance-Pension Fund, which provided a $15,000.00 life insurance policy for every league player this past year, free of cost. The additional amount in the playoffs is raised by an extra charge of 25&cent; for each paid admission ticket. The total of such admissions amounted to 99,942, to provide the $24.985.50.<span class="end-marker"> &#9632;</span></p>
