Long Term Contract Comes To End But Selke Unconcerned About Resigning Beliveau “He Has Been As Good As f Expected, “Says Habs’ GM: Big Cog In Club’s Success
Toronto Star Habs Five Year Plan With Jean Payed BOSTON, Mass.— Frank Selke was still sipping orange juice, a foreign substance with which Montreal Canadiens desecrated Lord Stanley’s gobley this spring, when some person mentioned that Selke had just run through his five-year plan. Before big Jean Beliveau answers the Forum factory whistle again he must be signed to a new contract. This is a chore which Selke has escaped since October of 1953, when the greatest manhunt in the history of hockey ended with Le Gros Bill inking a five-year agreement to play for Canadiens. Selke had to go high, because Beliveau was getting union overtime rates as an “amateur” with Quebec Aces. His various honoraria in Quebec, were estimated at somewhere between $15,000 and $20.000. Whatever his price, the Aces had a…

The repeaters are Goalie Glenn Hall. Defenseman Doug Harvey and Right Winger Gordie Howe. Harvey, incidentally, is the only unanimous choice for this year’s team. Hab Foes Can Worry—More Stars On Way Up
Montreal Star MONTREAL, Que.— There isn’t really any secret at all as to why the Canadien hockey club towers over its opposition as Mount Royal towers over Montreal, Only more so. The secret is public property, if you look closely. It’s being written on the walls, for all to see. even now when the major hockey season has finished, and only a few titles remain to be decided. If you think twice about the matter, and thinking twice in these dullish in-between days helps to space out the time, you realize that while victory in the Stanley Cup was the principal, it was by no means the only thiumpn of importance scored the past season by affiliates of the Canadien hockey empire, greatest in history, that Frank Selke has built up in the…
