California Star Battles Cancer; To Play Benefit

LOS ANGELES, Cal.— In that momentary lull in the Southern California sports world, that pause between the football and basket ball seasons, another sport, that of ice hockey, is producing a heartwarming story of courage and friendship. With the California Ice Hockey league season at full swing, one of it’s star players is staging a dramatic battle for his life as he fights an illness that has him on the critical list at a local hospital. Ray Bouchard, 28, a defenseman with the second-place Pasadena Panthers, whose home games are played at the Pasadena Winter Garden, played the last game of his career there two weeks ago, and was the club’s leading scorer at that time. DETROIT, Mich.— General Manager Jack Adams has tempered his statement a little, regarding liis charge that Boston players deliberately set out to injure Gordie Howe. Adams had charged that defenseman Leo Boivin and Real Chevrefils of the Bruins had combined on a “dirty play” that broke two of Howe’s ribs.
