Leafs Pick Up, Then Drop Waivers On Jack Bionda
TORONTO, Ont. — The Toronto Maple Leafs picked up waivers asked by the Boston Bruins for defenseman Jack Bionda, but subsequently dropped them, allowing Bionda to report to Springfield of the AHL. The Bruins, seeking to waive Bionda and Armstrong out of the NHL so they could report to Springfield, were surprised to find the Leafs offering the waiver price for the hugh defenseman. Bionda, a former Leaf farm hand before being picked up by the Bruins had been with Boston since the half-way mark of the 1956-57 season. He played 21 games for Springfield last season and the season before played 13 for the Leafs.…
Solinger Fires Bears With Six In Eight Games
HERSHEY, Pa.— All but overlooked by hockey writers, who have saved their best adjectives for Hershey’s “big” line of Willie Marshall, Dune Fisher and Obie O’Brien, Bobby Solinger, veteran left wing, has been doing a terrific job for the Bears. The 32-vear-old Solinger, who recently marked up the 500tli point of his ten-year American Hockey League career. has scored six goals and five assists in his last eight games to pull him three points ahead of his scoring mark last year, at the same time. With 12 goals and 19 assists to his credit in 4 2 games. Bob now has 216 scorers and 297 assists to show for his ten years in the AHL. A year ago he had 11 goals and 17 assists. Blades’ Coach Claims Glove Too Big
TOLEDO, O. — Coach Doug Baldwin of the Toledo Blades filed and filled another complaint against the Cincinnati Mohawks la3t week. He claimed that Cincinnati goaler Glen Ramsey wears a glove that is oversized and it violates hockey rules. Before the game Baldwin had Ramsesy’s glove measured. Cincinnati won the game and the battle of the oversized glove.…
Teeps’ Runaway Continues’ After That It’s Wide Open
GUELPH, Ont.— Going into the final week of January the OHA junior “A” race was taking on the same hue as the NHL. St. Catharines Canadiens were walking away with the flag race. The other six positions were wide open with a dozen points blanketing the field. Slumps and spurts were the order of the day throughout most of the league. Hamilton TigerCubs made the biggest advance in the midJanuary jockeying. Cubs, after hitting a bad streak that saw them pick up only three wins in 11 starts put together three wins in a week, taking Guelph twice and the league leading Teepees.
