Wing Rookies Fizzling Out Continues

DETROIT, Mich. The Detroit Red Wings tested two major rookie missies this season, and already both have fizzled out. Tom McCarthy followed Guyle Fielder back to the minors. Failure of the McCarthy program was conceded finally by general manager Jack Adams. He ordered McCarthy back t the Edmonton Flyers farm club in the Western League and called up Metro Prystai… who is far from a rookie … as a replacement. Prystai was welcomed happily by the fans in these parts for he was one of the most popular Red Wings on five of Detroit’s NHL title teams. Trouble At Farm The only off-beat note was that here was firm proof that the farm organization was having trouble producing youngsters of NHL caliber. The Wings started the season with four rookies. Three points ahead of Regina Pats at time of writing, the Mintos have won their last three games after being down at the end of the second period in each one. In Flin Flon last weekend they won 4-2 and 3-2 after trailing 2-1 at the end of the second in each game and, at home Tuesday, they beat the Pats 5-3 to overcome a 3-2 Pat lead at the end of the second. Third Period Power This third-period show of strength isn’t something that Ken Ullyot’s crew dreamed up in the last week. They have been doing…

Toledo’s Willey Put On Waivers

TOLEDIO, O. — Waivers have been asked on Ken Willey, the Toledo Mercurys rookie defenseman, at cutdown time in the International Hockey League. Each team in the IHL had to be down to 14 players as of Wednesday, Nov. 27. The Mercs, like most of the IHL teams, have been carrying 15 players. Since the Mercurys are especially strong at defense and with three veterans plus a sophomore in the lineup Willey had to be the one to be offered. However, Coach Doug Baldwin has been very impressed with the 20-year-old’s play and tried to make a deal with Indianapolis to use Willey on a look-see basis and that the Mercs would still have rights to him next season. Willey may be used Wednesday night by the Chiefs. The Mercs, who have won…
