Toronto Globe and Mail THE new Leafian hockey triumverate was in informal session with charge d’affaires Staff Smythe surrounded by Manager Howie Meeker and Coach Billy Reay. As questions poured forth about next season’s plans, Staff put himself squarely on the record. “Ask Billy. He’s the coach. Howie and I are going to give him a free hand.” The particular question that prompted the forthright remark from a solid little man of hockey who has done a fine job of public relations with his Marlboro organization, had to do with a player being able to exploit his specialty. Baron Elik Royal Choice As AHL’s Top Newcomer
NEW YORK NY.— The oldest and the biggest of all the rookie stars to ever arrive in the American Hockey League, Boris (Bo) Elik, leftwing of the Calder Cup Champions, Cleveland Barons, has ben named as the league’s outstanding first year player for 1956-57. He will receive the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Trophy, and a $300.00 league bonus for his remarkable achievements as a recruit. The 27-year-old Elik is unique, in that most rookies to enter the professional ranks are in their very early twenties. Previous to this season, all of Elik’s hockey had been played in the amateur ranks, with the exception of a single game trybut in 1955-56. Curry Snubs Reports He’s Hanging Up
MONTREAL, Que.- Floyd Curry, the Honest Blocker of the Montreal Canadiens expects to be back with the Stanley Cup Champions come Fall training for 1957 - 58. Reports that Floyd would hang up his skates after last season were denied by the checking right winger, in fact the rumor; “I’m only 31 years of age,” says Floyd, “ and I’m in good shape. I think I have lots of hockey left in me yet. I’ve heard the stories that I’m about to retire but so far I haven’t said a word.
