Hendy To Ask For One NHL Sponsor Per Club
CLEVELAND, O.— General Manager Jim Hendy of the Calder Cup Cleveland Barons is expected to present a motion at the next annual meeting of the American League which will in effect, limit one major league sponsor for each club in the AHL. Hendy’s specifically points his finger at Rochester, newest entry in the league. “It kills independent owners,” he said. Both Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs sponsored the Americans and supplied the club with players. Jim indicated that he would ask that a limit of one sponsor per club be put into effect by 1959-60 season. However, there are reports that other owners see fit to have the law instituted immediately. A Lasting Memory
IT was only three months ago or was it yesterday — that few of us sat with Dick Irvin in the warm living room of his Town of Mount Royal home. There was a sadness about him that illness encourages. A wicked germ had attacked his legs and he carried a cane with him. When he stood, he leaned on it for support. When he sat, it lay mockingly at his side, screaming the message to his audience that walk was impossible without it. MONTREAL—While Gordie Howe was naming Harvey the player he has the most trouble with in the NHL, Doug refused to tell the name of the player who contuses him the most.. Draw Nearly 100,000 Gate For Cup Run
NEW YORK, NY.— American Hockey League players from the four teams which competed in the recently completed Calder Cup Playoffs, were awarded with a share of the highest player playoff pool in years. A total of $58,412.30 was divided among the players of the Cleveland Barons, the Calder Cup winners, the Rochester Americans, Providence Reds and Hershey Bears. The pool is based on 50% of the net receipts from the 12 games necessary to decide the three playoff series, two preliminary rounds and the finals, each conducted on a best four out of seven basis. Cleveland which finished the regular season in second place, eliminated fourth place. Hershey in its opening round and then defeated Rochester in the finals, received 38% of the total pool, or $22,196.67. Rochester, the league’s new entry…
