Bill Sweeney Seen As Star Of Future With NY Rangers
NEW YORK, N.Y.— Eddie Shack, Bill Sweeney, Marcel Paille, Jacques Marcotte, Ray Mikulan, Bruce Gamble and Aldo Guidolin are names that are gaining more significance in Ranger circles now that thinking time approaches. While most readers have a passing knowledge of all but Sweeney, we’ll dwell a moment on the Guelph center who has not yet figured in Ranger plans. The word on this 20-year-old scorer was that he’s too slow for an NHL feature. And you know how these ugly rumors can mushroom. Before you could say Jack Toadstool (ha, we fooled you), Sweeney was written off the list. Worse yet, from a hockey standpoint, the blah-blah boys added that he likes golf. So much that he recently was appointed professional at the Fairview Golf and Country Club in Guelph. Where, pray tell, does…

Stanley To Quit Hockey If Elected In Timmins
BOSTON, Mass.— One day during the winter a visitor to the Newton apartment shared by a half-dozen Boston Bruins was startled to hear from the next room what sounded like a political speech. Adding to the visitor’s surprise was his impression that the voice delivering the speech was that of Allan Stanley, Bruins’ defenseman. What’s going on in there?” asked the visitor. “That’s Allan Stanley,” replied Bob Armstrong, another defenseman. “He’s making a speech.” A few minutes later the mystery was cleared up by Stanley, candidate for the Conservative party nomination to represent the riding of Timmins in the Ontario Parliament. “I have a tape recorder which I use to work on my public speaking,” explained the tall native of Timmins. “I make a speech, then play it back for criticism and correction. That’s what I…
Providence Bows Out Of Playoffs After Big Year
PROVIDENCE, R.I.— The Rhode Island Reds have concluded their 31st season in pro hockey and Terry Reardon and Jack Crawford have finished their second season as G.M. and coach, respectively. And despite the fact that the Reds were dumped from the playoffs by the Rochester Americans, the record proved that Reardon and Crawford have teamed to do a whale of a job with the Providence sextet. The two Irishmen, who were teammates at Boston some years ago. walked off with the Calder Cup and Teddy Oake Trophy last season for finishing first and winning the playoffs. In addition, the Reds also won the Tommy Filmore Trophy, symbolic of supremacy over the Springfield Indians, the other New England representative in the AHL. During the season just finished, the Reds gained the Teddy Oake Trophy again…
