Hockey Circles Saddened By Death of George Slater

MONTREAL, Que.— Hockey circles throughout Canada and the United States were saddened last week by the sudden death of George Montague Slater. His untimely death at 70, when he had been until very recently enjoying good health was a stunning shock to those close of affairs in the Quebec Hockey League. He had been president of the Quebec circuit through its various phases of organization for 22 years. He was first president of the old Senior Group of the Quebec Amateur Hockey Association when the provincial body ruled all branches of the sport below the NHL level in the province. Mr. Slater had missed only two scheduled games at the Forum when he was confined to his home, 4311 Harvard Ave., Montreal. His friends thought he had absented himself because of a common cold.…

AHL All-Stars Get $300. Apiece

NEW YORK, NY.— The American Hockey League All-Star team and special award ballots are in the hands of the six cities’ press, radio and TV representatives, and during the next two weeks, they will decide what, players are to be honored. The sportswriters and” sportscasters will vote on a first and second all star team, a most valuable player and an outstanding rookie. Each player selected for the first ail star team receives a league bonus of $300.00 with the second squad choices getting $200.00 each. The MVP award and the best first year player designation are also each worth $300.00 to the recipients. In addition, these two players are presented with a permanent trophy. Bathgate So Good That Back-checking No Longer A Problem

How good is Andy Bathgate, the Rangers’ record breaking right wing? He’s so good, according to many Seasoned observers, that the man with the decapitating shot, does not have to backcheck any more. Not that Andy doesn’t backcheck. He’s no better and no worse than most when it conies to that hockeytmen’s art but lately his offensive work has been so potent that the opposition has assigned players to “watch Bathgate and forget about scoring.” So why should Andy have to back-check in the first place?
