NEW YORK, N.Y.— When NHL president Clarence Campbell told a nation-wide television audience that he hoped the new Saturday afternoon CBS telecasts would stimulate hockey interest among non-hockey playing youngsters, he couldn’t have anticipated the quick response to his talk. Within a week of the first telecast, Jan. 5, the following hockey “firsts” took place in the New York Metropolitan area. (1) The first peewee hockey league in Long Island was formed at Long Beaoh, site of a new municipal outdoor rink. (2) For the first time in its history, the New York City Parks Dept, gave hockey teams permission to play at its magnificent indoor rink at Flushing Meadow, site of the Worlds Fair Grounds. In addition, plans are underway to form a peewee circuit at Tom Lockhart’s Long Island Arena in Commack when…

Player-of-the-Week
Edward C. J. Litzenberger of Neudorf, Saskatchewan, is one of the few bright spots on an otherwise bleak Chicago hockey horizon this year. The rangy right winger is the Hawks leading scorer of the moment and their big scoring hope in the Chicago drive to escape occupancy of the National Hockey League cellar for another season. Big Litz, he’s six foot, one inch and 194 pounds, is tied for 11th place in the individual scoring tables with 32 points on 16 goals and an equal number of assists. Originally the property of Montreal Canadiens, Ed helped sink his old mates on Jan. 20 with a pair of important assists as Hawks thumped the league champions, 4-2, in the Stadium. He also contributed a goal on Saturday as Hawks staged a game fight before…
