When Gump Gets Hot He likes Cold Pucks!
NEW YORK,—Gump Worsley doesn’t mind when action gets hot around his New York Ranger net but when the pucks themselves start warming up—well, that’s against the rules! It all started at a recent Ranger-Chicago tilt at Madison Square Garden. As you all know, the pucks used in a hockey game are “frozen” about four hours before game time to enable them to slide smoothly on ice. Apparently someone forgot to “ice” the pucks in this particular game and one of the hot pucks shipped into action.—much to Worsley’s surprise and dismay. Poile Denies Dirty Charges
EDMONTON, Alta.— Bud Poile took time out following his team’s thrilling 6-5 overtime victory over the Calgary Stampeders to answer charges that he has instructed his players to deliberately indulge in rough play. The charges were made by Frank Boucher, general-manager of the Brandon Regals, currently holding second place behind the leading Flyers in the prairie division of the Western Hockey League standings. Here is Poile’s statements: “In regard to Mr. Boucher’s ridiculous and totally unwarranted attack upon me personally, and my players—to say the least I am most surprised and shocked that a man of Mr. Boucher’s wide experience would make such remarks. “I have always admired Mr. Boucher and can hardly bring my self to believe that, in all seriousness, he would actually make such malicious statements. “As for sending any of my players…
