Are Flin Flon Bombers Trying To Buy WJHL Title?
REGINA, Sask.— Are the Flin Flon Bombers attempting to “buy” the Western Junior Hockey championship? Around Regina, there is a feeling that the northerners are trying to do just that. Coach Bobby Kirk’s Bombers burst out with nine wins in their first 10 starts in the Saskatchewan Junior League. But apparently they weren’t satisfied with that fine record for they then announced the acquisition of two more outstanding players. Nhe new additions are Pat Ginnell, one of the best men on last year’s Port Arthur North Stars, western junior finalists, and Barry Beatty, former captain of the St. Boniface junior Canadiens. Ebployment in the mines at Flin Flon is one of the attractions that brings boys like Ginnell and Beatty to Flin Flon. Both of them are working in the mines. For the past…
Stamps And Cougars Doing Their Share To Keep WHL Going
VANCOUVER, B.C.— The last time Calgary Stampeders and Victoria Cougars pulled an Atlas with the Western Hockey League—held it on their backs, Herman—was almost never. Yet they’re doing it today with a Santa Claus flair. Of the two, Calgary raises the most eyebrows, including several in Edmonton which like nothing better than a good tragedy with Stampeders in the title role. Stamps tried something new this year. They made a fistful of changes. One of the changes, not in the script, has them in last place in the Prairie Division and the latest word out of that Albertan metropolis is that one such change deserves another. Their Coast Division counterparts, coach Colin Kilburn’s Cougars, are also on the other side of good living. Kilburn’s kind of competitor can stand losing but only if it happens to…
Rookie Could. Be Hawk Super-Star Of Future
CHICAGO, ILL. — “I was born up in Duparquet, Que. — quite a distance north. The family stayed there until I was eight since Dad, who died three years ago, was working in the mines. We then moved to Oshawa for three years before coming down to St. Catherines. I’ve called that my hometown ever since. “You know, there was plenty of ice at Duparquet, but I somehow never got interested in hockey until we settled in St. Catherines. I guess I got the bug or something when I saw all those kids hurrying to the rink with their skates just about every day of the week. “I finally decided that I’d give hockey a try one day and try for one of the bantam teams. You may think I might have looked…
NOHA Puck Purude
THE DEEP FREEZE … Marilyn Monroe is a big hit in Bus Stop, but don’t talk “Bus Stop” with the Sault Ste. Marie Indians of the NOHA Senior “A” circuit … they were stopped dead five and a half hours in a stalled bus in a driving rain storm about fifty miles out of Sudbury on their way home from a recent road trip … with no heat but with frayed nerves they stuck it out until around 8 a.m. when a wrecker towed the bus to a town ten miles away … it was a harrowing night to say the least, especially when it followed a road trip without a victory for the Indians … I made that road trip with the team and now I know what a…
