Stamps’ Frederick Has Chance To Better WHL Shutout Record

VANCOUVER, B.C.— The Western Hockey League has had many great goalkeepers in the more than seven seasons of its professional existence. Netminders like Lorne “Gump” Worsley of the amazing NY Rangers, Glen Hall of the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings, Emile Francis, Johnny Bower, Charlie Hodge, Marcel Pelletier. Hec Highton, Phil Hughes, Bill Brennan, Luce Dechene, to name a few, and now Ray Frederick. Worsley holds the WHL record for best goals-against-average with 2.40, set in the 1953-54 season when the little guy led the Vancouver Canucks to the league title. Last season, 1954-55, John Bower, who lost the regular NY Ranger goalie job to Worsley, tended goal for Vancouver and tied the WHL shutout record—seven—established the previous season by Brennan, while toiling for Calgary. Toe Blake Still Wary Despite Habs’ Lead

MONTREAL, Que.— The Montreal Canadiens currently are in first place in the National Hockey League, in fact they haven’t been cut of it all season, but coach Toe Blake, being a man of conversation mien, isn’t counting any chickens. A lot of trouble can be hatched between now and the end of the season. Blake doesn’t appear to be too worried about the Detroit Red Wings, Habs’ nemesis in other seasons, but he’s keeping a wary eye on the New York Rangers. “The Red Wings probably will get going,” he said the other day. “But I can’t help but remember the 1947-48 season. The Canadiens won the championship in the preceding year but we never got going in 1947-48. We kept thinking, we’ll pick up the slack but we never did. We ran…
