TORONTO, Ont.— Barry Cullen will set dietetisc back 50 years. The second member of the St. Catharines’ Cullen clan to get a tryout with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Barry arrived from Winnipeg Warriors of the Western League with a rather amazing explanation when someone noted that he looked heavier than he did last season with Teepee juniors. “I guess I should be heavier,” he admitted. “Brian (his brother) and I operated an ice-cream parlor near St. Catharines last summer and we turned out to be our best customers. “I don’t imagine there’s anybody in the country who ate more ice cream this summer than I did, but the truth of the matter is I lost five pounds. “When I played junior I was 177 last year and this year I checked in at 172. on Thin Ice

DETROIT, Mich.— The NHL chapter of the A.G.U. better keep a sharp eye on Clarence Campbell and his rules makers. The six puck-scarred members of the A.G.U. (Amalgated Goaltenders Union) offer only routine proposals at their annua) convention. The pay already is good and you can’t beat the hours. So they string along with the same old requests for smaller nets, bigger creases and a law against screen shots. But the way things are going in the league this seasou, the puck catchers soon may find working conditions getting worse instead of better. That’s because the goalies themselves seem to be getting better instead of worse. Look what’s happening. In the first 43 games there were 16 shutouts. A year ago there were only seven shutouts in the first 49 games. To Clarence Campbell, this is little…

Eddolls Fears He ‘ll Drown In Waves Of Bison Injuries; Pace May Prove Too Much

BUFFALO, N.Y.— The first quarter of the American Hockey League season closed with Buffalo Coach Frank Eddolls wondering aloud about two matters, the wave of injuries which kept the Bisons below physical par from opening night and the hoped-for return of Big AI Dewsbury from the parent Chicago Black Hawks. Buffalo was in the thick of the battle for first place during the first 16 games of the 6 4-game schedule. But Eddolls couldn’t help but wonder how the Herd could keep pace if the injuries continued to pile up. “Injuries, or lack of them, have decided many a race in the past and if we continue to get clipped the way we have, I’m afraid that we have a rough road ahead.” No less than seven Buffalo players have missed games due to…
