WASHINGTON CAPITALS
WHEN IT came to Vincent Iorio’s first year of pro hockey, things couldn’t have gone any better. Not only did the two-way defenseman win a Calder Cup with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, but he also gained valuable experience off the ice, living with youngsters Hendrix Lapierre and Henry Rybinski. “It was almost a bit of a competition, who could cook the better food, who did their laundry first,” Iorio said. “Having those two around was super beneficial for me because we’re all competitive and want to be better. When you have iron sharpening iron, it’ll push you pretty hard.” So who was the best cook? Iorio joked that he’s biased but nonetheless nominated himself – despite being pretty new to cooking. Salmon and asparagus were favorites, and he used a variety of…
NEED TO KNOW

MINNESOTA WILD
NO MATTER which NHL team called Charlie Stramel’s name on draft day, he was going to be happy. But as a proud son of the State of Hockey, and one who played his high-school puck at Rosemount High, it was that much sweeter when the Minnesota Wild picked him 21st overall in the 2023 draft. “You obviously can’t control the draft and what teams think of you,” Stramel said. “But to hear your name called by the hometown team that you grew up supporting was a dream come true of mine.” Surely, the Wild were equally, if not more, enthused Stramel was still on the board. While the 18-year-old didn’t blow the competition away as an NCAA freshman at Wisconsin – he had five goals and 12 points in 33 games –…
OTTAWA SENATORS
IT TOOK a while, but when the Ottawa Senators finally made their first pick at the 2023 draft, calling Hoyt Stanley’s name gave the Sens a prospect who embodies everything the organization values in a player. At 6-foot-2 and 187 pounds, Stanley – who was drafted in the fourth round (108th overall) – brings size and mobility. But it wasn’t always that way. “I think I was 5-foot-7 in bantam that year preparing for the WHL draft,” he said. “But then, that summer, the COVID summer, I grew almost four inches and put on about 40 pounds. Ever since then, it’s just been about adding on muscle in the gym and filling out my frame.” That may be the most intriguing thing about Stanley. He’s just scratching the surface of what his…
