OVECHKIN-O-METER

Ovi put his name at the top of the NHL’s all-time shots list when he fired his 6,210th. That moved him ahead of Ray Bourque, who for more than two decades had been the all-time super shooter. What other marks are in Ovechkin’s sights?

DISCOVERING BARILKO

IT’S A LITTLE after 9 a.m. as Chad Calaiezzi leads me through the hangar at Expedition Helicopters and outside to FODI (Foxtrot Oscar Delta India), a sleek, black-and-gray Eurocopter AS350 A-Star helicopter that just returned from a diamond drilling operation up north. The tour was conceived at last summer’s World Junior Championship during a conversation between representatives of the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine, TSN’s Gord Miller and Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft. Through their mutual connections, corporate sponsors and…

While parents can take their time in navigating those waters, NHL scouts don’t have that luxury: they’re scouting 17-year-olds who may be moody or sullen, but the reasoning behind it is unknown. Are they immature, a bad seed or just growing as a person? Left winger Matias Maccelli, 22, was a wizard during his draft year back in 2019, but not everyone was sold on his body language. Because of that, a player who diced up the USHL with Dubuque was still available to the Arizona Coyotes in the fourth round, 98th overall. Ever since, the flashy Finn has been on a steady…
