SAN JOSE SHARKS

OWNERSHIP HASSO PLATTNER BY CURTIS PASHELKA HASSO PLATTNER, 78, who co-founded business software giant SAP 50 years ago, has had majority ownership of Sharks Sports & Entertainment since 2010 and recently became the sole owner of the team. Per Bloomberg, Plattner owns roughly six percent of SAP, a corporate partner of the NHL that had $32.9 billion in revenue in 2021. He has been chairman of SAP’s supervisory board since 2003 but has started a final two-year transition term in the position. Bloomberg listed Plattner’s worth as of early December at $12.7 billion, a decline from his reported worth of $15.3 billion in mid-December of last year. Nevertheless, Plattner remains one of the wealthiest owners in the NHL and has overseen major organizational changes within the Sharks over the past several months. Per Sportico, the…

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

OWNERSHIP ROCKY WIRTZ BY MATT CARLSON THE CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS are rebuilding around youth, with the team’s roster undergoing an overdue gutting and complete ground-up rebuild. The Blackhawks – now transitioning into the fourth generation of control under the Wirtz family – are rebuilding off the ice, too. And that includes the reputation of the franchise. The Original Six team has long been owned by the Chicago-based Wirtzes, whose net worth Forbes placed at $4.4 billion in December. The Wirtz Corporation was launched by Arthur Wirtz in 1926. In the 1930s, Arthur Wirtz began partnering with James D. Norris of the Detroit-based hockey-legend Norris Family. The two eventually went into ownership of the Blackhawks (then Black Hawks) together, and Wirtz became the club’s sole owner upon Norris’ death in 1966. Arthur would eventually pass the team down to…

Q&A WITH GARY BETTMAN

W. GRAEME ROUSTAN: The first thing I’d like to get into here is Kim Davis. Kim Davis is on the cover of this issue of The Hockey News along with Samantha Holloway and Valerie Camillo. But Kim was hired almost five years ago today. In the past five years, could you have imagined when she was hired today the amount of work and effort that she’s put in? GB: More importantly, the impact. And the answer to your question is I had very high expectations, and she has exceeded all of them. She has been not only a breath of fresh air, but the expertise that she brings, not only to the legal office, but our clubs have come to rely on her as somebody who really has the expertise. And…

SELLING THE SENS

SALVATORE ‘SAL’ Galatioto is the 30-plus-year veteran – the go-to five-star general – when it comes to selling a franchise in the NHL. Or in any league for that matter. He actually looks like General Patton for us fans of Second World War history. As one NHL team owner told me, “if you don’t know Sal, you are not in the business of sports.” I dropped by Galatioto’s office on Madison Avenue in New York City to catch up with an old friend. We are both Second World War history buffs, especially when it comes to the old warbirds. He has several models and pictures of these vintage aircraft throughout his office as well as deal monuments everywhere, far too many to count, that are handed out by financial institutions after…
