100 People of Power & Influence

GEORGE PARROS

AGE: 43 / TOP 100: 36 NHL SENIOR VICE-PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF PLAYER SAFETY THE HOCKEY NEWS: What’s a typical daily routine like for you? GEORGE PARROS: We have full nights and days of hockey, and you never know what those nights bring. It is a bit nerve-racking that way. Prior to the games beginning, we’ll have a weekly meeting with my department to get on the same page. Then, we’ll have games at night. We’ll watch the games, and I’ll typically monitor the games from my home. I like to watch one game at a time and absorb what’s happening in that particular game. Then I might bounce around, depending on what comes into my email box. We have 13 of us in this department. Every night, we’ve got dedicated eyes to each…

COLORADO AVALANCHE

OWNERSHIP KROENKE FAMILY BY MIKE CHAMBERS KROENKE SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT enters 2022-23 on a high, coming off its second Stanley Cup championship with the Avalanche. KSE owner Stan Kroenke bought the team – along with the Ball Arena (then Pepsi Center) and NBA’s Denver Nuggets – for $450 million in 2000. KSE’s sports ownership empire includes the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Arsenal of the English Premier League (and its associated women’s squad). In 2022, KSE became the first ownership group to win NFL and NHL championships in the same year. The KSE-owned Colorado Mammoth also won the National Lacrosse League title in 2022. In 2000-01, their first season under KSE, the Avs captured the Stanley Cup. Despite some lean years in the interim, in 2021-22, the Avalanche won the Western Conference regular-season title…

PAT KELLEHER

AGE: 51 / TOP 100: 16 USA HOCKEY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR THE HOCKEY NEWS: What did you learn of coming out of the pandemic? PAT KELLEHER: I learned we did not have a pandemic emergency action plan. We did learn a lot sadly, like everybody, there were really tough lessons for all. Really, we were impacted first and foremost at the grassroots level. So our membership took about a 20 percent hit in grassroots participation across the country, which was really difficult to manage through and trying to have our local leaders do what they could to make sure hockey could be played in their communities where it was allowed. So there’s a lot of changing things on the fly, adjusting when different regulations changed or were removed. Happy to say now, as we look…

PHILADELPHIA FLYERS

OWNERSHIP DAVE SCOTT BY WAYNE FISH A FRANCHISE WITH THE third-best points percentage in NHL history doesn’t tolerate mediocrity well, but that’s the position in which Flyers governor Dave Scott has been placed. Faced with the prospect of missing the playoffs for a third straight year (which would make it the second-longest post-season drought since the team began play in 1967), the Flyers have tried to make improvements, but so far not so good. Of course, Scott’s handpicked GM, Chuck Fletcher, has been taking most of the heat. But by extension, Scott has had to face awkward questions of his own about the direction of the franchise. Back in January, Scott gave Fletcher the old “vote of confidence.” However, since then, he’s not made himself available for comment. “Right now, Chuck’s my guy,” said…
