Eddolls Second Bison Coach To Serve Second Term
BUFFALO, N.Y.— The return of Frank Eddolls to the post as coach of the Buffalo Bisons was neither without precedence nor totally unexpected. When Eddolls was replaced in Chicago by his one-time boss at Montreal, Dick Irvin the stage was set for history to repeat itself. It did. Eddolls, like Buffalo’s other two-time coach LeRoy (Goldy) Goldsworthy, took over from the man who had succeeded him. Ironically, the men who followed Goldsworthy and Eddolls, and were, in turn, followed by them, were both one-time left wing stars in the National League—Hector (Toe) Blake and Gaye Stewart. Blake took over from Goldsworthy, who became General Manager of Buffalo’s Houston farm team in the U.S. League, with the start of the 1948-49 season. The season hadn’t run half its course before the “Old Lamplighter” and Buffalo General Manager…
THE FAN FORUM
A Thought Dear Sirs:— I noticed recently that the penalties in minutes have been broken down into majors and misconducts thereby giving a truer picture of the penalty factor in hockey. But these records only give the penalties committed by each team. I think it would be very Interestink to know the breakdown on what teams the penalties were committed against. Then it would be easy to see what team was the “Patsy” of the league and if it was able to take advantage of the penalty by comparing it with the standings. It might also show the effectiveness of the team’s power play. Also a power play goal scoring percentage might be determined by assuming a team would be scoring 1.000 by scoring a goal per man penalty, and a lesser percentage for less…
Training Camps Stamping Ground For Eager Kids
MONTREAL, Que.— With the National Hockey League launching into another rugged 70-game schedule next month, the six teams in hockey’s best circuit arc busy getting ready for the opening. So many changes have taken place since the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup last April that the old adage, “You Can’t Tell The Players Without A Program’’ is going to hold truer than ever. The “up-and-at-em’’ Chicago Black Hawks who took on a new look last year under the, guidance of Frankie Eddolls have received further plastic surgery and in order to make sure that the job would be a howling success, Jim Norris Jr., called on the master surgeon, Dick Irvin to do the job. Dour Dick had become a permanent fixture in Montreal and his switch to Chicago was both unexpected…
Dick Irvin Returns To Scene Of First NHL Triumphs
CHICAGO, Ill.— James Dickinson Irvin returns to the city and team which gave him his first tastes of stardom in the National Hockey League next month, but few in the current family of Black Hawk fans are able to recall his early days as leader of the club when it was still an infant member of the circuit. Dick was one of the prize pieces in the package when Tex Rickard promoted the transfer of the Portland Rosebuds of the old Pacific Soast loop to Chicago in 1926. With Pete Muldoon moving along as coach in the deal, Irvin became the first captain of the new NHL entry, nicknamed the Black Hawks. $250,000 Operation Estimates listed the cost of the talent included in the Portland parcel as about $100,000. Another $100,000 had to be…
