AHL Rinkside Revealings

Although his career as a hockey player in New York City was for a period of less than one year, Glen Sonmor’s fine character and spirit made a lasting impression there. Sonmor, while playing for the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League, after leaving New York Rangers, recently lost the sight of his left eye in a game against Pittsburgh. When the sports fraternity and business executives of New York learned that contributions were being accepted for a fund for Glen in connection with a benefit game for him, their response was immediate and generous. Donations were received from the West Side Association of Commerce in New York, the New York Hockey Writers’ Association and the New York Ranger Fan Club, among others. Alf Pike Returns To ‘Peg To Handle New WHL Entry; Rated Highly By Experts

Actually the announcement came as no surprise, for ever since it was confirmed that Winnipeg had been admitted to the Western League, Pike had been rumored as having the inside track for the post. It was not before conferring with many prominent NHL figures, however, that Perrin was satisfied that Pike was…

And this statement is made despite the fact that at the box office the loop suffered its reverses and most crushing of all, was compelled to shorten its battle lines, after a little more than a month of operation when Ottawa Senators withdrew from competition. Senators tossed in the towel when club owner Tommy Gorman became convinced there was little use of continuing. The Saturday night competition of National Hockey League games televised into Ottawa was too great. Box office receipts were shrinking almost to the vanishing point. Yet the league carried on. The knotty problem of…
