Ceremonies? Not Harvey, He’d Rather Go Fishing

MONTREAL—Tradition? Doesn’t mean a thing to Montreal Canadiens’ Doug Harvey. When the Montreal Royals won. the Allan Cup in 1947, with Harvey as one of the outstanding stars, the team, naturally elated, stood around on the ice whooping it up, posing for photographers and accepting congratulations from well-wishers. Only one member of the team was absent. Where and who was he? Score yourself five points if you guessed that it was Harvey, another five if you guessed he was in the dressing-room. Why wasn’t he there with the rest of the team? The answer to that one is simple. Doug just doesn’t like all the extra-curricular goings-on that are part and parcel of big time hockey. He’d rather go fishing.…

Two In, Two Out! A hockey oddity took place at the Forum, March 13th when Referee George Gravel expelled both coaches from the game. Me chased Shawinigans Roger Leger for mimicking him and later thumbed Royals’ Pete Morin for tossing a chair on the ice. Byng For Burnett Royals’ Kelly Burnett, the leader point-man in the Quebec Hockey league was named the 1954-55 winner of the Lady Byng of Vimy Trophy as the player who best combined good sportsmanship with fine play. Two-Platooning Goalkeepers Pays Off Handsomely For B’s With Henry In For Long John

BOSTON, Mass.— The Boston Bruins are finding out this season that when an emergency goal-tender is needed, there’s nothing like having a good one on hand. Twice this season the Bruins have lost their starting goal-tender during a game. Both times they’ve had a capable replacement standing by. The first time was in a game here with the Montreal Canadiens in early January, when Sugar Jim Henry suffered a pulled muscle.
