Foley Proves Hendy Shrewd Talent Scout
PITTSBURGH, Pa.— The strange gyrations of the hockey fates come up with many a remarkable result. Pittsburgh Hornet right winger Gerry Foley might as readily be consulted as cited as an example. Two years ago, Maj. Conn Smythe of the Toronto front office watched a rangy Cleveland centerman named Bob Bailey spread considerable havoc among the Pittsburgh farmhands of the Leafs in the American League’s Calder Cup playoff final. Struck violently by the idea that Bailey was strictly Toronto stuff, the Major dealt soon and effectively with General Manager Jim Hendy of the Barons, and when the Maple Leafs assembled for pre-season drills in the fall of ‘54, Bailey stood in their midst. Lyndhursts Made It Big Time DORTMUND, Germany—It’s a little bit late to be finding It out but the much maligned East York Lyndhursts did hockey a big favor last year. Lyndhursts will be remembered mainly for the fact they represented Canada and got licked by the Russians in the European version of the world championships. Not many Canadians figured that was good. The roar of anger rolled from Halifax to Nanaimo and back. Yet the defeat of the “Canutskies,” as they say in Prague, really made these championships big stuff for the first time. That was obvious recently when the newspaper serfs assembled at Krefeld to be briefed and beered prior to setting out for their posts of duty.
