Frederick Reminds Buffalo Fans Of Old Favorite Jake The Snake

BUFFALO, NY.— The initial appearance of Ray Frederick in the nets of the Buffalo Bisons reminded localites of the first time Jacques Plante, present Montreal puck stopper, wore Buffalo colors. Styles and circumstances made for the reminiscent mood. Frederick, tall and wiry like “The Snake” who captivated Buffalo fans with his daring way of keeping enemy shots from being scores, joined the Herd in the month of January—as did Plante two years before. Each took over from a redhead. Plante from Phil (Red) McAtee and Frederick from Hank (Red) Bassen. Then, too, the picture was not very bright when either of them appeared on the scene. Buffalo was deep in the American League basement when Plante came here. Frederick’s arrival found Coach Gaye Stewart’s crew battling to evacuate the league dungeon, a spot it had…

Inconspicuous Danny Summers Plays Big Role For Indians

Springfield—He hasn’t won the “Schaefer Award” but he deserves one every time he plays an American Hockey League game for the Springfield Indians. That’s how much the presence of Danny Summers means to the Springfield team, in the thick of the fight for” the Calder Cup. The veteran defenseman is the big, silent type who does his job in such a smooth, efficient manner that it goes unnoticed by wild-eyed fans who usually are taken up by the flashy, eager-beaver type of players who glamorize the game of hockey today. Summers isn’t a headline-grabber and wants no part of the spotlight. He’s the kind of a player who helps form the backbone of a good hockey team. The players themselves and Coach Red Mitchell are the ones who know the real…

Ex-Goalie Wharram Shows No Sympathy For Rival Goalies

BUFFALO, N.Y.— For a fellow who spent a couple of his formative years between the pipes, calm-visaged Kenny Wharram isn’t showing American League goaltenders much consideration in his attempt to win the centre berth on the loop’s All-Star team. The 21-year-old Buffalo playmaker, after a slow start, has moved to the fore among the Chick circuit’s centres. His 21 goals as of Feb. 1 gives him the lead in that department for his position while his 45 total points place him sixth in the overall point standings. Winning his spurs with the Bisons, however, was not as easy for Wharram as his lofty position as a scorer now indicates. Placed between Coach Gaye Stewart and Capt. Ed Slowinski—the spot vacated by Donnie Marshall, last year’s AHL rookie of the year—Wharram had difficulty hitting his stride…
