Tight Race
VANCOUVER, B.C.— A three way race has developed for the feading goalkeepers honors with Glenn Hall of Edmonton out in front with a goals against average of 2.83 per game followed by John Bower, of Vancouver, with 3.02 and Marcel Pelletier, of Victoria, with 3.06. Three shutouts were turned in the past week. Hall and Bev. Bentley, of Saskatoon, both got their second one of the season and Lucien Dechene, of New Westminster, picked up his fifth to tie Marcel Pelletier, of Victoria. All of Dechene’s shutouts have been against Vancouver, a record for the most shutouts by a goalkeeper against one club in a season.…


Selke Insists Mistake Made In Quoting Him
MONTREAL, Que.— Dana Mozley’s story in the January 22 issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS came up for comment here during the past week when Frank Selke, managing director of the Canadian Arena Co. took exception to a line in Dana’s story in which he says that Selke didn’t consider Dean Prentice, Pete Conacher or Ronnie Murphy major leaguers. The story, which dealt with the possible trade of Canadiens’ Dickie Moore to the Rangers for any one of the three above mentioned players, credits Selke with having made a statement which Selke says “he definitely did not make and which in my estimation reflects unfairly on three fine young hockey players.” He said. Goaler Gil Mayer One Big Reason Why Hornets AHL Title Contender
PITTSBURGH, Pa.— The smallest member of the team, but the wearer of the largest amount of playing equipment, has also been one of the biggest factors in the success of the Pittsburgh Hornets in the American Hockey League for six seasons. Little Gil Mayer, the Hornet goaltender, familiarly known as “The Needle” to teammates and fans because of his frail thin 135 pounds in a height of five feet six inches, is once again the owner of the most efficient goals allowed record this season.
