Richard Hoped He’d Score 400th Against Wings

MONTREAL, Que.— Maurice Richard, Canadiens’ incomparable “Rocket”, wrote another chapter into the hockey history books on Saturday night when he basted the 400th goal of his National Hockey League career as the Habs defeated the Black Hawks 4-2 in Chicago. Now a mature and mellowed performer, the Rocket accepted the goal with philosiphical calm. “It was just another one’’, he said. “But I’m kind of glad I got it against Al Rollins. “Not that I have anything against Rollins. He’s a great guy. But, if you remember, I got my 325th against him to break Nels Stewart’s record and it wasn’t a good goal”. Richard’s 400th was a typical effort by the fast, hard-skating right winger. Kenny Mosdell, the NHL’s all-star centre, started the play, darting in on the Hawks’ Stanley-Martin defense. As Allan…

Bronco Horvath Latest Scoring Sensation In Western League

Edmonton, Alta.— If Norman “Bud” Poile, coach of the Edmonton Flyers of the Western Hockey League, does nothing else this season he can sit back and thank his lucky stars for the deal which brought Bronco Joseph Horvath to Edmonton last fall from Syracuse of the American League. Poile had to give up three players—Buddy Boone and Jim Anderson, forwards; and defenceman Larry Thibeault—to pry Horvath loose from Eddie Shore, who signed the sensation of the WHL to a professional contract in 1950. At the time of the deal Shore, one of hockey’s all-time greats, told Poile that within two years, maybe sooner, Horvath would be playing regular for the parent Detroit Red Wings, world champions. And the way Bronco has been frustrating WHL goalies it wouldn’t surprise anybody out here if Jack…

Lindsay, Howe Latest Members Of Exclusive 250-Goal Club

DETROIT, Mich.— Within a single month three new members joined the “250 Goal Club” in the National Hockey League this season. Such a mass initiation may have left an idea that the honor isn’t quite as select as it used to be in the old days. After all, only four players managed that feat in the first 34 years of the league’s history. Howie Morenz was the first, followed by Nels Shewart, Aurel Joliat and Rocket Richard. Then along came a threesome at the same time. The trio listed Ted Lindsay, Hill Mosienko and Gordie Howe. DESPITE THIS big rush into the charmed circle, scoring 250 goals still stands as a tough feat for any player to achieve. So tough, in fact, that no more new members are close. It’ll be several years before another candidate…

On Thin Ice

DETROIT, Mich.— After a half season in the league, Jimmy Skinner can be excused for feeling that life on the Red Wing bench is like a long roller-coaster ride. The club has had plenty of ups and downs. In his brief tenure the rolypoly Detroit pilot has seen his team take over first place three times. He also has seen them plunge to third, eight points off the pace and the farthest a Detroit team has been from the lead since 1948. And he has seen his two star forwards, Gordie Howe and Capt. Ted Lindsay, both drop from the lineup with injuries. They are the nucleus of the Detroit offense, the key men in the last six title drives. “Those have been tough breaks but I don’t believe they mean we will lose the title,”…
