Pennies from Heaven, Hades for Referee RED HAMILL was playing for the Black Hawks at the time, and he bumped into the referee. The old redhead protested it was accidental, but the whistle-blower thought otherwise and “pitched” Red — as they say in the trade — into the sneezer for 10 minutes. The man in the organ loft at Chicago stadium pumped out a few bars of “Pennies From Heaven.” Down came the coins in a clinking cascade — pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters. For nearly 20 minutes, the game was delayed while the scrapers scraped and the more frugal players picked up meal money for a whole week. “That’s just how easy it is to give a referee a bad night,” Butch Keeling, the long-time Ranger, sighed. “That was one. of the…

The Bruins’ coach established a ban on what he considers extracurricular defense activity In an effort to put an end to a December slump. The Bruins’ defensemen, Patrick became convinced, were wearing themselves out in fruitless forays with the puck. The practice, he announced, would have to stop. “I think our defensemen were running out of gas in the late minutes of games,” analyzed Patrick, “and I attributed it to all the rushing they were doing. “There is a time and a place for rushing, but carrying the puck is not a defenseman’s main job. His job is to help…

Saints’ Bownass No Saint; Poles Poland, Faces Fine

OTTAWA, Ont.— The conclusion would have to be that the hockey players read THE HOCKEY NEWS. It could possibly be an explanation for what happened here recently. ’Twas remarked in this comer recently that although, the hockey in the Quebec League this season was of an excellent quality, something definitely was keeping the fans away. Perhaps, it was conjectured, the fans want to see a little more spirit, a bit of fisticuffs, or a couple of good feuds. The customers loved it, too, everything, that is, except the stick-swinging which is carrying things pretty far. The lead in the Quebec League’s red-hot race was at…
