Habs Denied Bouchard Trade

All-Star Rearguard Was Rumored Going To Chicago Hawks CHICAGO, Ill.— Let’s again take a few moments to look back at events that made headlines in the world of hockey in the not too distant past. Six years ago this week — Toe Blake of the Canadiens, with only five points to go to equal Bill Cowley’s all-time NHL scoring record, suffered a double fracture of his right ankle in a game on home ice. The injury brought on his retirement as an active big time star at the age of 35. Boston Bruin officials were high on young Ed Sandford as a likely successor to the aging Milt Schmidt as the club’s center ice mainstay… Montreal spokesmen were staunch in their denials that All-Star rearguard Butch Bouchard would be traded to the last place…

Pennies from Heaven, Hades for Referee RED HAMILL was playing for the Black Hawks at the time, and he bumped into the referee. The old redhead protested it was accidental, but the whistle-blower thought otherwise and “pitched” Red — as they say in the trade — into the sneezer for 10 minutes. The man in the organ loft at Chicago stadium pumped out a few bars of “Pennies From Heaven.” Down came the coins in a clinking cascade — pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters. For nearly 20 minutes, the game was delayed while the scrapers scraped and the more frugal players picked up meal money for a whole week. “That’s just how easy it is to give a referee a bad night,” Butch Keeling, the long-time Ranger, sighed. “That was one. of the…

Poile Might Break Record

VANCOUVER, B.C.— The odds are all against him doing it but Edmonton Flyers’ playing-coach Bud Poile might become the first defenseman in history of professional hockey to lead his league in scoring. Poile, who piloted the Flyers to the Western League playoff championship last year, is striving just as hard this season to lift his club out of the cellar. In 2 3 games this season, the ex-NHLer has scored 35 points on seven goals and 2 8 assists, just one point behind the leader, Frank Ashworth of Calgary. He is almost a cinch to reach Babe Pratt’s record of 66 points set in the 1948-49 season. Rated one of the finest point-men in the league, Poile has been picking up a good portion of his points on the odd man play. He…
