• IT WAS THE ESTEEMED and truculent Leo Durocher, of baseball fame, who once cynically remarked: “Nice guys, don’t win.” And big Jean Beliveau, the most expensive rookie ever to be lured into the National League, is beginning to agree with the fundamentals of the hard-boiled Durocher theory. Probably Le Gros Bill has revised It to read: “Nice guys get slugged,” which would just about summarize his brief and painful experience in the National Hockey League this season to date. Beliveau made a fine start, with three goals to his credit, but on October 22, before the League had scarcely got rolling, he was smashed across the ankle in a game at Chicago, a small bone was split by the blow, and he was out of action for seven weeks. Johnstown Jets Zoom Into IHL Leadership

CINCINNATI, Ohio.— Watch those Johnstown Jets! That’s the latest cry in the International Hockey League, where the Pennsylvanians have moved, into first place in a closely-fought race that finds only seven points separating the pacesetters from the eighth-place Louisville Stars. A year ago, as a member of the now-defunct Eastern Amateur Hockey League, the Jets captured the playoffs but were beaten by Cincinnati’s Mohawks of the IHL in their bid for their second straight United States senior title. When the EAHL went out of business this campaign, Johnstown applied for admission and was voted a member of the International loop, of which It now is the easternmost city.
